Through Rosie the Riveter we know that women played a big role in the construction of aircraft during WWII, but did you know that they were also called upon to fly them? The WASPs or Women Airforce Service Pilots were crucial components of the war effort, flying not into battle but ferrying missions to bring fresh hardware to the battle lines, freeing up male pilots for the combat roles. Not only did the WASPs do their patriotic duty, but as this image attests, they looked just as hardcore as their male counterparts doing it.
