Hooniverse Weekend Edition – Attention West Coast 24 Hours of LeMons Participants: Your IOE Entry is Ready!

Welcome to another Hooniverse Weekend, and for this weekend I thought I would clean-up the mounting tips in the old Hoooniverse in-box. So let’s start out with this thing; A 1971 AMC Javelin SST Project….

This was sent in to the tip line by one of our editors, who thought this car was Super-Duper Cheap! Be that as it may, I thought this would be the perfect car for a West Coast 24-Hours of LeMons or Chump-Car team. No need for a theme, because the car is a theme all by itself. Yes, you could mount a mannequin, dressed in Track & Field gear, with a pose like he’s throwing a Javelin…. but I digress. According to the listing:

FOR SALE MY 1971 AMERICAN MOTORS JAVELIN
ENGINE 304
RUNS AND DRIVES BUT IS A PROJECT IN PROGRESS
DARE TO BE DIFFERENT THAN THE GUY WITH A CAMARO OR MUSTANG
THIS IS WHAT REALLY A MUSCLE CAR IS
ALL OF THE PEOPLE WILL ASK YOU
WHAT KIND OF CAR IS IT???
UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME I NEED TO GET IT SOLD
THE BUY IT NOW WILL GET YOU A LOT OF EXTRA PARTS LIKE AN ORIGINAL REAR SPOILER WHICH TOTALLY CHANGES THE APPERANCE OF THE CAR AND A FRONT SPOILER, AMX DOOR PANEL REPLACEMENT.AMX AMBER TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS, PASSENGER SIDE DOOR REPLACEMENT AND MORE EXTRA PARTS. AGAIN THIS PARTS ARE INCLUDED IN THE SALE ONLY WITH THE “BUY IY NOW” OPTION

The seller doesn’t have a buy it now option in the listing, so unless he ends the listing, he’s SOL. The current bid for this IOE Winner is $315, and the seller wants $1,495 for it. This is going to be one eBay auction to watch, as there is about one day left as of this writing. Check out the listing here.

So what do you think it will sell for?

It's probably going to sell for more after this free Hooniverse advertising.

I wonder why it has 1972 Javelin taillights? Is the year mis-stated? Swappage? For $315, snap it up. For $1,495, ummm…..no thanks.

I don't think he will make his buy it now price. Maybe $800. It's easy to sell off $300 worth of parts for LeMons.

I like it and probably would have paid his asking price a few years ago when I had a rusty 1973 Javelin AMX 360/Go Pack car, just so I could use it for a shell. Sadly though, that car no longer exists and neither does my reason to buy another AMC. Still, I would hate to see a nice, rust-free Javelin shell used for racing.

I lust after the early 68-69 Javelins, in fact I was given a 69 with a 343 auto by an uncle just before I turned 16. Sadly, my evil father and I took it for a spin and he spun it twice on our dirt roads. A little touch of the gas and we suddenly were facing the opposite direction.
"Not in a million #@$%& years" came the verdict, and I got a Gremlin instead.
The 70 Javelin I was never as fond of, and the late 71-74s always hurt my eyes to look at (my god, what was with AMC and their schozes?!?). But for some reason I now find myself drawn to them… in a forbidden love kinda way.

This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available.
I see an AMX headed the other way on my commute frequently enough to suspect it is a daily driver. It is in decent enough condition, but a little rough around the edges evidencing its four decades of service.

My 1976 Hornet Sportabout (in Brilliant Safety Orange paint from the factory…) had a '72 grille and cone-style hubcaps that I think were also from at least two years earlier. AMC loved the parts bin savings, and lots of stuff was swappable.
I would like to build up a nice Javelin someday, and they *were* raced, but I'd want to find one in yuckier condition if I were going to campaign it at Lemons.

Heck, those Mustang II hubcaps must be worth four or five bucks at least.
