For Sale: My 1991 Mitsubishi Montero Heads To Auction

By Jeff Glucker Mar 25, 2026

I thought this one would be a forever car. Things change, and you realize there are so many vehicles out there to explore. If I had a larger garage and more money, perhaps the Montero would be sticking around. But I have a chance to buy a different boxy old SUV, and I need some room and money to make it happen. So now, my 1991 Mitsubishi Montero… is for sale.

Having had good luck there in the past, I decided to list the Montero with CarsAndBids.com. There’s no reserve on the auction, so whatever happens, happens. Here’s hoping the result is decent, of course.

I first acquired this Montero in 2019. Aside from a certain old Mercedes wagon, this is the longest I’ve ever owned a single vehicle. This boxy brute has lots of charm, tremendous capability, and I have to say, I think it looks pretty cool too.

Still, it’s an older vehicle with many miles on the chassis. So I’m certainly a little nervous to see just how it fares on the auction block. Things working in its favor include the relatively recent engine rebuild, both front and rear seals being fresh, the timing chain being replaced, and all of the upgrades I’ve done over the years.

What’s coming next? I will hold off on sharing that until after the sale of the Montero is done. I don’t want to get too excited about something before it happens, because then it might not happen. For now, please share the auction link with anyone who might be interested.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go clean out the glovebox, pretend I’m not crying, and reminisce about past adventures in this mountain goat of a machine.

  1. Good luck with the sale. Hopefully your daughter won’t be mad at you for selling… she is going to need a car soon, and you aren’t going to be able to replace and sort yours for whatever the high bid is going to be on a Mitsubishi on C&B.

Consider adding details about the tent. I didn’t see any pictures with it deployed. A good tent can add significant value.

Do you have all your Montero articles on this site indexed? If so, post it with the ad, and drive traffic to this site. It’s one thing to say a motor has been rebuilt, but something else to show the detailed article with pictures. And someone might bid higher to get a celebrity vehicle.

    1. “Celebrity” ha.

My daughter asked me if the Mustang was manual gearbox too, so I have something to teach her on. Yeah, you can pull up the Montero has its own category to see all the posts. I should add some pics with the tent deployed though, that’s a good idea.

We have my wife’s CX-5 nearing 110k miles, which could be kiddo’s first car – but I’m not sure if that Mazda will stick around for much longer. My wife’s next car, when we figure that out, may well be Sloane’s first car.

And yes… I did drive the Mustang last weekend. Plus I took it to an event at my daughter’s school. It’s exciting to drive it finally… but now I see all the OTHER things I need to get started on, haha.
