Polestar 1: A concept car you can buy

By Jeff Glucker Jun 17, 2020

Polestar is its own brand, spun off from the Volvo mothership, and the first vehicle to roll out the door is the Polestar 1. This is basically a halo car making a style statement for the rest of the family.

It’s a plugin-hybrid coupe with concept car looks. And a halo-car cost. The price is $156,500 for this unicorn two-door and you may never see one on the road because it’s rare. Polestar is only building 1,500 units in total. Of that, just 450 will be sold in the States.

Is it worth that much coin? If you look at it as the ultra-rare collectible it will certainly be, then yes. Otherwise, it’s hard to make a case for this admittedly gorgeous machine… even if it has a total power output of 619 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.

  1. I watched the video and I just can’t get over the price or how it weighs half a ton more than a Dodge Grand Caravan. I know exclusivity has a price but this one is right up there. Once you said what it was in the video it through me off more than a bit. I was surprised your daughter didn’t gasp but that was probably because she seems to have been working harder on remembering where you were on your script 🙂
Does the name Polestar really carry that much cache to justify a vehicle that costs that much in a world that doesn’t care about cars?

  3. The price is insane, but they might sell them anyway. Whatever they can’t push onto rarity-seeking one percenters might just be dumped in my driveway – I am okay with that…

  4. From some angles I’m reminded of BMW’s 30-year old E31 8-Series. Those are fairly classic lines.

        1. Don’t think I’ve seen gullwing doors that left (most of) the roof structure in place before.

          1. In my mind, that’s very Volvo of them:
“Let’s have gull wing doors, Sven!”
“But… that will reduce the strength of the steel cage, Olaf!”
“Okay, let’s have gull wing doors but run the roof rails through, Sven.”
            “Brilliant idea, Olaf!”

  5. “Hey, what does your daddy do for a living?”

“People loan him fancy cars and he drives around the mountains talking to himself.”
