For Sale: Ford Mustang II – The King of Kings

Mustang

As I’ve mentioned previously, Malaise is my specialty. What I particularly like are the tape-and-stripe packages, especially those with a mascot. Just look at that snake. If this car doesn’t remind of the disco era, I don’t know what will.

Mustang

I stumbled across this gem, and couldn’t help but share it. I mean, look at it. I have never seen such a clean Mustang II for sale, let alone a King Cobra. Ever.

The Mustang II gets a lot of undeserved crap thrown at it. Sure, it wasn’t the road-burning muscle machine that previous Mustangs were, but it was a product of its time. With the increasing constraints placed on the automotive industry by legislation, it’s a miracle the Mustang name survived at all. The II was a return to the 1965 Mustang’s small size, just not quite so pretty. Still… Call it a Pinto all you want, but I like the Mustang II, darn it.

This example is about as expensive as a Mustang II might ever get, but if you want a practically brand-new King Cobra, here is your chance. You may want to ditch the leisure suit, though.

From the ad:

This Arizona King Cobra is an ALL ORIGINAL NUMBERS MATCHING classic that is in flawless  condition and has it all…This car has been garaged its whole life and has ONLY 750 refreshed miles on it…There were ONLY 2,017 ever produced in 1978…

The exterior color on this Mustang is a factory fresh Black with the original Black leather bucket seat interior to include NEW carpet…The exterior also comes with NEW T-Tops and ALL NEW Decals which completes this car…

It has ABSOLUTELY NO dings, dents, rust, rips or tears anywhere on the body…
The undercarriage is as clean as a whistle and the car is ready to go…

This ALL ORIGINAL NUMBERS MATCHING 1978 Ford Mustang King Cobra comes equipped with the rebuilt original 302/250HP engine, 2-barrel carb, air conditioning, 4-speed transmission w/custom 2-stage clutch, power steering, power disc brakes, Black Jack Headers, AM/FM Radio w/CD Player, NEW battery, tinted windows, coil springs, Giant Snake decal on hood, KYB air shocks, NEW bushings front& rear, dual exhausts w/H pipe through Turbo Mufflers, Original Lacy Spoke wheels, NEW tires and just to much to list…

He's new here and still learning how things work. I'll go ping him over at G+ to get him to fix that.

Yeah I know. I just need to confirm it's out of my $100 price range. A Mustang II with an LS swap would be the ultimate slap in the face for any fan boy. Not only acknowledging the existence of the Mustang II but dropping a GM engine in it… it would be so beautiful.

Not many Mustang II's will be in that price range. They are already in the $5k-10k range.

These things did NOT have 250HP in 1978. A base Corvette only had 180hp and a L-82 Corvette had 210HP in 1978 or so. I just checked, the factory rating was 139HP. Not to say you couldn't rebuild a 139HP 302 into a 250HP engine VERY easily, but it isn't original.

SAE Gross or Net? I can't remember when the switchover happened.

      1. P161911 Avatar

Net, the switch was '73 or '74. The "rebuilt" engine might be gross 250HP is pretty good for a 2bbl 302.

Failing to mention that this is the pinnacle of development of the Pinto underpinnings is criminal. How could those four wheel studs could stand up to the microns of torque? I had a friend with a Cobra II that completely embarrassed a guy in an '76 AMX (NOW THERE'S A HOOD STICKER) I think he hit 140 in it once (furlongs per fortnight)

    1. danleym Avatar
      danleym

Not to be a complete tool, but there was no '76 AMX. 77, yes, but available with nothing more than a emissions choked 2bbl topped 304, so smoking one isn't saying much…
The hood sticker on the 77 (and 78, 79, and 80…) AMXs were nothing short of amazing.

It was before my time, but the 70s seem like a fun time…it seems like people were busting lots of random nuts with random chicks. Cool ass groups like Rufus, Slave, SOS band…I think I would have liked to have been around then…plus there was no smog check in CA yet, so it was all good.

Nice car, but it sounds like the typical seller patter…__Blah blah blah NUMBERS MATCHING blah blah blah ONLY 10,213 EVER MADE blah blah blah ONLY ONE REGISTERED IN THE TRI-STATE AREA blah blah blah COLLECTORS blah blah NEW blah blah NEW blah NEW ONLY 75,000 MILES AGO blah blah NO TEST PILOTS blah blah
ALL YOURS for only $(reasonable price x 5)

Must be something wrong with me, I Googled was the price was in dollars and I thought, "$15 grand? Not too bad." Not that I have that kind of cash nor if I did would I spend it on a Mustang II, however I do like these King Cobras.
I like how it says 'all original' but also "custom 2-stage clutch … Black Jack Headers … CD Player … tinted windows … KYB air shocks". Oh and "NEW carpet … NEW T-Tops and ALL NEW Decals". All original means something different to this guy than it does to me.

that is truly a great looking mustang II no doubt, but you should know that ford did not build or sale any mustang II with a v8 with more than 130hp (stock)from mustangII coupe to Ghia,s to machI,s to cobra,s and even King Cobra,s they all had just 130hp max. terrible but true fact. The Ford 4.6 281 cubic in 600hp motor available from Ford is still far better than any offering from chevy with the same cubic in. The little 281 cubic inch modular Motor is bad to the bone.but lets not forget the 5.o roller that came on the scene in 84 this is when Ford started upping the hp 150,175,190,220 by the time they stop putting the push rod 5.0 in mustangs you could get a 94,95 with 265hp cobra package so successful was Ford that chevy just drop the Camaro because of constantly starring at the tail end of the cobra and GT. a lot of folks dump on the mustang II and bash it good but the fact is it is still a mustang no matter if you like or not. I am a true Mustang Fanatic from 64 1/2 to 2013 no matter 4cyl,6cyl,8cyl,2barrel,3/2barrels,4barrel,2/4barrels,stock,turbo,super charger,or even add spray. I am Mustang thru and thru like any car that you choose as your hot or street rod fix it up the way you want and drive it. I drive a 2008 GT with mild mods and i have all the fun i want and i have and drive a 1978 Mustang II MachI has a 1995 265hp cobra motor and to top off my coral of Fords i have a 1971 Detamaso Pantera 351 Cleveland cobra jet. I am sticking with my mustangs good or bad !!!!!!!!!!!
