Those who have been reading my automotive writings over the past few years know that I tend prefer reliable, reasonably priced, and/or purpose made vehicles. Fantasy Finds Friday isn’t about that being reasonable, however. This is about cars that speak to us in a way that we may not be able to explain. It’s about cars that awe and inspire us. The history and significance of Preston Tucker’s automobile is so great that Hollywood made a movie about it, and therefore it does not need to retold on these pages here. What needs to be said is that one of these fantasy cars will soon be offered for sale via RM Auctions. With the auction price ranging between $1.4M and $1.6M, it is slightly out of my price range, but that does not stop me from dreaming about it.   First and foremost, at this point in my life I am a driver. I have spend enough time wrenching on cars and it just doesn’t appeal to me anymore. I now simply prefer to just drive. But I wouldn’t do that with this car. After my winning bid I would have this extremely important piece of automotive history transported to my small garage located under my Upper West Side townhouse. I would have the delivery person cover it up and lock the garage. The next Sunday morning, just before the brisk autumn dawn, with no one around, with a cup of coffee in hand, I would open the garage door and pull off the cover. I would spend the next several hours studying every inch of this machine from the surprising comfort of a garage roller seat. I would try to image what its designer was thinking when penning each one of its important bits, what motivation he had, what inspired him. That’s my fantasy find for this fine Friday.
