Baby Driver could be the next iconic car movie

Remember getting hyped up for that Ryan Gosling flick Drive? Yeah that one turned out to be a disjointed movie about: A) a heist driver, B) a love story, or C) a dude on the Autism spectrum who couldn’t say more than a few words yet could head stomp with the best of them. It… wasn’t great. Here to save us from that film is a new driving movie that could have all the right pieces in place.
It’s called Baby Driver, and though the title sounds odd at first it makes sense when you watch the trailer I’ve posted above. We’ve got a team of great actors here, but we’ve also got some cars that appeal to a wide enthusiast base being driven in a manner that shows some serious skill involved.
We’ll have to wait until August to see if this one lives up to the hype I’m generating in my head. Judging by that trailer though? I’m in… this one looks awesome.

From the title I thought it was the sequel to Boss Baby.

I found the Variety review to be most fair and objective. They liked it. I will see it. It’s been 19 years since John Frankenheimer delivered a film with stellar car chases. Variety thought that an early sequence in Driver Baby comes close to the chases of yesteryear.

Neat to see confirmation this was a minor inspiration for the movie (and also, I sort of want the Cortina).

Ooh… very good; I hadn’t ever seen that before.
Noel Fielding showing how great he can be. And a Cortina.

That red Subie stays awfully clean through the trailer. Let’s see how it fares throughout the film.

Edgar Wright seems to have a thing for that model Subaru

It wasn’t perfect, but based on this trailer I’d say Drive beats the hell out this one. Not really the same genre, though. Drive was a drama with some action in it, this looks like a cheesy comedy about a teenaged driver called Baby.

Edgar Wright is a fantastic filmmaker and he just keeps getting better. I’m looking forward to his take on this genre.
