If you’re shopping in the full-size luxury sedan segment, things are going well in your life. This is an expensive place to party, but you’re going to wind up going home with a winner.
This is a space dominated by Germany and Japan. We have the BMW 7-Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8, and the Lexus LS. There are others, of course. Some a bit less expensive and others costing as much as a condo or a house.
Somewhere in between all of that lies the Jaguar XJL. It’s a long-wheelbase sedan from the kitty company that’s now known for its rip-roaring V8s. How can the automaker’s full-size four-door get away then, with packing a 3.0-liter V6 under the hood here?
Well you add a supercharger to push power to 340-horsepower. You also build the body panels from aluminum to keep the weight down.
To take things even further, you create a seriously lux interior space, add way more style, and then price the thing better than the rest of the competition…
[Disclaimer: Jaguar tossed us the keys to the XJL, loaned us the car for a week, and included a tank of gas. During that time I founded a new hedge fund and bought a Hatteras because if felt like I could… the hedge fund is bankrupt and, if the insurance company asks, the boat was sunk off Catalina island by “pirates”.]
Jaguar XJL: Long, Luxurious, and Lightweight

Great review and love the outtakes. Just curious, what will these type rides be worth in 10, 15, 20 years? I’m thinking about a recent CL Crapshoot with lotsa references to V-12 BMWs and the like.

I’m fairly sure that those body panels are made from Aluminium.

Before we decided it was better to put about 5 months worth of car payments into the Saab as opposed to 5 years of car payments into something else, I was seriously in the market for a 2006-08 Jag XJ Vanden Plas. As I recall, I checked the interior specs against the current gen XJL and the previous gen actually had more rear seat headroom and legroom. I had 2 candidates in mind: a 2007 300HP V8 VDP with 89,000 miles and a 2006 400HP Super V8 VDP Portfolio with 77,000 miles. Both were well-kept and both were in the $18-20,000 range. I really wish I could have pulled the trigger on the Super V8. Sadly, both cars were gone within 2 weeks, although I’m surprised they lasted that long.

The XJ has really aged well. As Jeremy Clarkson noted, the V-8 version has a whiff NASCAR about it.
