Hooniverse Van-Tastic Weekend – A 1979 Dodge Custom Maxi-Van

Continuing on with our Van-Tastic Weekend, I had to highlight at least one over-the-top Custom van, and thanks to AutoTrader Classics, here is the perfect van to do so. It is a 1979 Dodge Maxi-Van, the largest Dodge Van made. It is soooooooooooooooo over-wrought with details, from it’s Black & Gold Paint, to the Velour and Shag Carpeted interior, to the rear wing on the roof….. Why its a rolling Bordello!

I will let the listing speak for itself:

Now that your back from that flashback, let us remind you that you are checking out an awesome 1979 Dodge Maxivan. If the 70s aren’t your thing then you might want to move on, but if you remember rockin’ tie-die shirts and long hair continue on. Shortly after being bought in 1979, this van was fully customized to what it is today. It is truly a time capsule blasting you back to the 70s. If you haven’t noticed yet, the car is covered from top to bottom in custom graphics and airbrushing. The Black paint paired with the Gold oldschool graphics look great broken up by a section of custom artwork wrapping the entire car.

The car is powered by a 318 V8 that has no problem getting this thing down the road. What is so custom about the engine you ask? Well, its located underneath the dash! There was no room in the engine compartment so this V8 was custom mounted right inside the cab. Most people think cruisin’ around town might be difficult. This is not the case at all! With power brakes, power brakes, and cruise control it couldn’t be easier! While the van is all original from 1979 multiple items have been replaced to keep it running strong; new Flo Pro dual exhaust, new K&N filter, new front brakes, new master cylinder, new in line fuel filters, new battery, new voltage regulator, new heavy duty alternator, new holly carburetor, and a new fuel pump! Hate stopping for gas? Well with its 36 gallon fuel tank you will be filling up 1/3 amount that everyone else is. Save money on hotels because this ride is a hotel on wheels! From the bed in the back to the refrigerator and lounge chair this thing has it all! This thing is incredibly comfortable to cruise around in. Being more like a piece of history than a vehicle this 70s classic wont last long!

Asking price for this STD on wheels is $23,000!. This van has 33,000 miles on the odometer, so we have to assume that is was used as a love shack at some point in its life. So does this make you want to get a pair of Bell Bottom Jeans, a tie-die t-shirt, and go cruisin in your mock afro and beads? See the original listing here.

Never seen a custom Maxi-Van before. And a *half-ton* Maxi-Van? Must have been special-ordered. It really should have at least a 360, and it needs side pipes.

*THIS* is the inspiration I shall use for "Brownie, the World's Greatest Crappy Old RV(tm)" in its Shagtastic makeover.
    Needs moar sidepipes though.

Wrong time period, Jim. Tie-dye, beads, and bell-bottom jeans were definitely passe by 1979, and the custom van trend was already beginning to fade. The driver of this thing would have worn polyester shirts and platforms, though he would be thinking about cutting his hair and switching to narrow stovepipe pants and skinny ties. There would be Journey, Rod Stewart, Dire Straits, Supertramp, and Cheap Trick on the stereo, though once again our intrepid driver would be thinking of buying some Blondie, Talking Heads, Cars, and the Knack. I think this very same fan was featured on J******k a couple of years ago.

It appears to have my initials embroidered into the interior. That's clearly a sign from some omnipresent being, but WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

      Bong Water

A time capsule indeed. I can just imagine how much weed was smoked in this thing in its day. I hope they shampooed all the spilled bong water from the acres of shag carpet.

It's awful, tasteless and just plain hideous. I love it! Would I pay $23,000 for it? No. However, it is still cool in a time capsule sort of way and if 70's vans with gold shag carpeting patterned in such a way as to disguise vomit is your thing I don't think you could get a better vehicle to let your freak flag fly.

Does the $23000 include a Wasserman test?

When a man loves a custom van
Can't keep his mind on nothin' else
    He'd trade the world
For the good thing he's found
If those graphics are bad, he can't see it
That van can do no wrong
And turn his back on his best friend
    If he puts it down

My momma always told me "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." But on the plus side, it is a maxi van.

Are those… padded cabinets? Good Lord. On the bright side, with the interior redone in slightly-less-shaggy STD-free carpeting, this would be all kinds of pimp – the exterior is perfect as-is.

This looks like my grandmas house with wheels.
…Seriously though, she lives in a van on blocks.

Wow, between yesterday's Beauville and this Maxivan, you've summed up my family's transportation in my early years. Our Maxivan was a '74 and it was a 1 ton TEC camper conversion, complete with the pop up top. It started life as a green & white window van before TEC added all the camper goodies.
I like how this guy says "There was no room in the engine compartment so this V8 was custom mounted right inside the cab." Uh, no, that's where all of them were. I sure how he's got the engine cover, our Maxivan was loud enough with the thing in place.

Knowing the weight and position of that water bed, I don't even what to know how this handles above 40mph. I also don't want to know what it smells like inside.

I think that most of you jerks who are putting down this beautiful work of art for which you were not born with enough brains to appreciate a thing of beauty, are just eating your hearts out all because you cannot afford to buy the gas it takes to drive it around the block a few times, let alone to actually own it. Good luck with your cheap Jap trash buggies. Will they be worth $ 23,000 34 years from now? Very doughtful!! If by then you can even find one. I certainly am not eating my heart out over it, because guess what? I just happen to be the proud owner of yet another beautiful customized 1979 Dodge maxi van too. Need I say more? So long to all of you suckers who have to ride around in your sardine cans. Right on and peace brothers!!!!

These custom vans are still to this day very much alive and well. There are also a few van clubs in Fla and California. I would survive a major crash in this vehicle compared to the death traps that are being made now adays. Those Chinese car companies are out to get you one way or another.

OMG…..we had one that had an interior just like this one but done in Red. Ours was a 1979 Dodge Maxi-Van but had the round headlights and regular red and white paint (although it could have been repainted). It had a sliding door on the side and no windows except for one on the side by that lounge chair. hahaha, it was just like this interior too. Ours had leather (or vinyl) quilted trim instead of the velour though. I bet it was the same company that customized it. I wish I could find out who they are. Does anyone know what company did this van?? We used to fight chickens and we used the van to haul them across country in the 90s because it was a smooth ride for them.
