What’s your view on cars? Or actually, what’s your view on the view from cars? I like to be able to see the sights… and the traffic lights, the turn signals on jacked up trucks, and the occasional drunken flasher during spring break. I am after all, a man of simple needs. That’s why I like cars with all kinds of visibility and think that blind spots are evil impairments straight from the pits of Hell.
Oh sure, I like me some custom cars, all chopped and channeled and sinister looking. When it comes to a daily ride however, I like to know what’s going on around me, as I’m pretty much a visual guy. Now, there are a number of vehicles where pillars, or the lowness of the roof, seriously impedes of that sort of view, and cars like the FJ Cruiser or the current Chevy Camaro really give me the Claustrophobies. I know that a lot of new cars are dropping the rooflines and hence the window area for safety reasons, allowing for side impact head bags to deploy faster and all that, but hey, it still doesn’t make me any more comfortable when inside them.
How about you, do feel safely cosseted in a low-slung car like the Camaro, and actually enjoy its gun slit-like windscreen and high cowl? Or, are you like me and appreciate being able to see not just what’s a half-mile down the road, but what’s right in front, in your rear quarter, and out the back? How important in a car is visibility to you?
