Welcome to Craigslist Crapshoot, our weekly search for the most bizarre, awesome, and/or terrible vehicles that the online classifieds has to offer.
Drifting is a style of racing that not everybody gets into. You all got into finding drifters last week, and we’ll see which was the driftiest contender in a minute. First however, we’re going to get our engines running.
This week we’d like you to find the coolest engines for sale that you can, sans cars. That’s right, whatever floats your boat – although no boat engines, please – and then let us know what you might do with it.
As always, we want your finds to go down in infamy and not in the site’s spam filter. Since we’ve changed commenting systems, you may need to update your commenter account. Make sure you have a Disqus account – they’re free and easy to get – and then comment away.
Oh man, all the potential drifters out there, and all the inherent awfulness that comes with the category of cars. You sure came up with some “winners” but only one can take the drifter crown, and that is the Supra found by OA5599 as it’s already branded with “Drift Patrol” on its doors. Plus, it’s a full grand under our $3K limit so you’d have some cash to get it either roadworthy or track worthy whichever is your bent.
Congrats to OA5599, and thanks to you all. Now, go get me some engines!
Because coolest is always connected with most cylinders, here’s a Ford V10

Obviously the best solution is to shove it in some kind of Ford, like this $750 Tempo. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/saskatoon/1993-ford-tempo-other/1067197993?enableSearchNavigationFlag=true
PRO BUILT BBF 521 CID 700 HP FORD RACE ENGINE – $7000

And it’s entirely written in caps, so you know he’s serious. I could think of a few things I would loved to have a 521 inserted into.
Pontiac OHC inline Sprint engine. Needs works but likely worth it.

Oooooh. The one engine that could make me totally forget about that SHO V6 Kiefmo posted.
1956 HEMI ENGINE COMPLETE – $4900

So that’s fun.
Jeff, your hoontruck needs this intake setup!
1963 Ford 390 Tri-power!
http://kansascity.craigslist.org/pts/5038706439.html
Really REALLY needs this setup.
Someone needs to put this in a hoodless hotrod. That intake is too sexy to be hidden!
http://kansascity.craigslist.org/pts/4982981614.html
Who ever does needs to polish it first.

Thrashed and tired. I read that as “Polish”, as in from Poland. Took a full second to shift gears in my head.
I hope the czech engine light ain’t on.
Yes it is, because the ECU is Balkin’.
Not sure how I feel about an engine this clean. They feel more used when they’re Greecey
Ukraine your neck far enough, you can see some Moldova the rear of it.
He had to replace all the hoses because the old was were all Belgium.
What a Spain in the ass.
Bulges can indicate a hose that’s about to fail, so when you examine hoses, pay special attention to any Bulgaria.
Hold the new piece of hose right over the top of the old one, Denmark the exact length so you don’t waste any of it. There’s Norway to get it wrong.
You’ll Finnish in no time.
No, gotta take it slow–no Russian.
Here’s one for the Civic kids who want to effectively double the displacement and power of their cars. Not all that interesting in the car it came in originally, but when stuffed under the hood of a much smaller car, suddenly gets entertaining with its 240hp/210tq.
Honda J30
http://kansascity.craigslist.org/ptd/5032880398.html
And lastly, an engine only interesting because it’s the only transverse mod motor Ford ever built. And, being massive as all of the Ford DOHC V8s are, probably means its one of the most nightmarish to work on.
The Lincoln “InTech” 32v V8, in Continental guise.
Also, it needs to be stuffed under the hood of a beat-up, ex-rental, hubcapped Taurus for LeMons duty.

Why do I feel like a mid-engined Aspire would be a wonderful adventure….
I’d put this in my Scirocco… if it would come close to fitting.
509 crate motor for sale. Confusingly, no mountainous power figures are included.

Somewhere, there’s a BMW R65 crying out for this conversion.
http://images.craigslist.org/01414_1kygg3AlKui_600x450.jpg
Lycoming 65 horsepower engine model 0-145-B2 – $2000 (West Islip, NY)
It’s like a larval stage Gold Wing, which means an R65 is too small, you’d need an R75/5, or Honda GL1000 to house it properly.
The more I think about it the more I want to put this in an early (pre-Interstate) Gold Wing as a bizarre what if.
It would also be cool hanging out the back of a Manx buggy.
Even better put it in a mustang.
It would make a confusing possibly-only-lateral-move-not-upgrade for an Amazonas. Still wouldn’t completely counter their aesthetic shortcomings.
I think the R65 is about perfect as is.
Less than $1500 for a running 427 seems REALLY cheap

http://pensacola.craigslist.org/pts/4997824771.html
It’s a tall deck truck engine. These make bigish torque stock but are spend y to build to big power. Stock they are cheap to buy, most end up unloaded when the owner finds out what needs to be done and the cost of doing it. Or fully built used until nearly worn out and sold off as a good runner.
Runs good, except for the cracked block. A ’57 Chevy Six.

I wonder how this would perform in something light – a Trabant 601, Fiat 500 or Honda 600… Probably pretty dismal experience.

Holy crap. Never knew anything about these. So very awesome.
Oh dear God, what have you done to me? I feel a new obsession forming in that part of my brain responsible for bad decision making.
I mean, look at this! They made CANNON-SHAPED MUFFLERS for them!

TRAIN MUFFLER!!!!
look – someone already installed a Maytag engine in a bicycle – over at motorbicycling forum – look how cool
We used to make dammed cool stuff in this country …
Damn straight. That bike is fantastic. You know how steampunk hipsters go in for this kinda stuff but it always looks kinda cheesy? This is the real thing, and it’s amazing.
Found an engine on Craigslist yesterday for $170. Also found a long-favorite motorcycle for $250, though. Decisions. . .
Because $10/cylinder. Looks to me to be a Ford 200.

Subaru EA81 aircraft motor for $5.5k. Will it fit in a Goldwing GL1100 frame?

Try an Amazonas, they used VW Beetle engines so this should drop right in,
I should probably read all the way down before commenting. Figured Tanshanomi’s Lycoming suggestion above would make for a weird Amazonas transplant. THIS would be far more entertaining, albeit possibly better used in a Vanagon (I’m definitely on team Two Wheels Good ‘n’ Strange, but I also like me some German box-on-wheels that can use the left lane, climb hills at speed, and generally not act as a rolling chicane).
A few years back I cleaned out a autobody shop where I was given 4 of these still in there packing and never ran. I gave them and and 4 more low hour examples to a sabaru guy I know. Anytime I need anything I can call this guy. Even if he sold them for one fifth of what this guy wants I’d say he did alright.
Looking too short, MM. Homebuilt hovercraft or ekranoplan is a good use for this.
A Nissan RB25DET and 5-speed stick for $1,999? Nice! Now to find a clean 910 Maxima diesel (because smog exempt, son!) wagon.

Seems legit.
It’s an Isuzu! It’s a Lotus! It’s turbocharged! And it’s just 200 cheap Canadian bucks! It’s a very good thing I’m on the other side of the country.
