Stylistically (and culturally) the late ’50s to early ’60s was a weird time, sort of a dead zone waiting for the mid-’60s to start. The raygun gothic of Googie was in, and cars seemed to follow suit with bigger fins, flares, bulges and chrome. Understatement was dead. Contrast this 1960 Chevy Bel Air’s styling with the more restrained looks of a ’55 or ’56, or the all-business ’62.

…which is why, were we to make this 1960 Chevy Bel Air ours, it’d have all the exterior flash of the local tire shop’s NASCAR entry: flat white paint with hand-painted: Honest Hoonie’s Tires HObart 7-3427. Also on the to-do list is gutting out the rotten interior (bring a trailer shop vac), moving the three-speed’s shifter to the (road-sign patched) floor and fitting in the gnarliest small-block and headers that’ll still pass for classic-looking. We’re looking at $1400 with an unmet as of publishing, with a Buy-it-Now at $2900. Steep for something that ran when parked in 1992, but it’s a unique model with a lot of potential. What say you?
