Weekend Edition – Two Different Ford Sedans; Which one do you think is more Desirable?

Recently Updated8

The fans of Hooniverse are slightly off kilter when it comes to Automotive Lust. Yes, we all love the look of the latest Camaro, Corvette, Viper, and the infinite number of Specialty Mustangs. We can appreciate both the artistry of the Hot Rod, as well as the poetry of the Drift Car. We can appreciate the engineering of the latest Ferrari or Lamborghini, or bask in the awesomeness of a totally built 4X4. But we tend to gravitate to more pedestrian machinery when we talk about our rides, or celebrate the everyday ordinary when talking about what we think of as bitchin’ wheels. And here are two examples right here. One is a full-sized 4-door Sedan from 1969, just one of many thousands sold that year at Ford Dealers across the country. The other is a very plain mid-sized two-door sedan from 1965 with a base engine and a standard transmission, one of many that were sold as loss leaders during that year. To the Hoons who populate this slice of the Blogosphere, either car will turn our crank… What about you?

This is a 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 4-Door Sedan, finished in a light blue with a White Vinyl Roof. According to the seller:

Drives Like New with 35k on the odometer, this car could have just that in real miles but I can
not confirm actual miles on this beauty, kept in a show room for a good part of it’s life, it looks to be
all original, just look at the photos and feel free to ask any questions! Factory air, Bench Seats, Automatic on the Column and Dual Exhaust. The owner would like someone to take this car and show it, he just doesn’t have the time any more so get a great deal on a show car that you don’t need to sink allot of time and money into finishing!

It looks like the interior was refinished at some point in its life, and the wheel trims are from a Galaxie 500 XL (Called Simulated Mag Wheels in the period brochure). Asking Price for this mid-level full-sized Ford sedan is $8,000, which seems a little dear, but what do I know. See the listing, and tell me if this Ford pushes all the right buttons. This is a 1965 Ford Fairlane 2-Door Sedan, the very embodiment of a stripped special. Owned by one family, bought at an Estate Sale, this is one very special Fairlane. According to the listing:

Up for sale is a 1965 Ford Fairlane that we purchased at an estate sale, it was a one owner local family… The miles are actual and runs unbelievably well… It has brand new tires, exhaust, manifold, and gas tank… This body style was only made one year… The car just needs restored!!!

A car with no radio, no power steering, no power brakes, and a three-on-the-three. Wow, you don’t see many of those anymore. Yes it needs paint, and maybe some sprucing up in the interior, but little else. Top bid so far is $1,225 with an unmet reserve. There are three days to go, so what do you think will sell this car? See the listing: [sc:ebay itemid=”111111781129″ linktext=”1965 Ford Fairlane” ]

I prefer the Galaxie, but only because the '65 Fairlane is such a frumpy, awkward car.
Is there a more generic front end than the '68-'70 Galaxie/Custom 500? Also, why is it that "FORD" hood/trunk lettering is missing from at least half of the '69s I've seen? Was there a production change or the letters just fall off really easily? This has bothered me for years.

      Frumpy and awkward it is!
      +1 for the beautiful Galaxie.

I know what you're talking about with the emblems. I think someone repainted the car and left them off. A friend's mom had a '69 two-door HT at the time, so this takes me back, and, I've got a '69 brochure here at the house. The car is for sale in Wichita Falls, the junction of the North Pole and Hell. Also, is it my imagination, or does it have power steering and manual brakes?
As for the Fairlane, it's too rusty to think about. Just drive it as is, or maybe coat as much as possible with Extend or POR-15.

I love the Fairlane. I'd drive it as is, but you just know some Richard Cranium will buy it and drop in another (yawn) 350/350 combo, and Chip Foose the hell out of the exterior with two tone silver and blue and 18" rims.

I would drive it as is as well. But I like a modded car(well engine and trans any way) , I think I would use taurus sho eccoboost with a six speed auto if the original equipment ever shit the bed.

That 500 is very compelling. The rear 3/4 view is like a preview of all those malaise era Detroit sedans, but it holds promise instead of dissapointment. If you were looking at that in '69, you might think the next 10 years will be great. You don't realize this might be a styling inflection point, and the doldrums are in reality on the horizon.
Then there's the front 3/4 with that nose that slopes away from the wind between the headlights that lean into it. It's a face of pride and ambition.
It's all the hopes and dreams of the 60's at the threshold before the fall.

Truly spoken. This was also the beginning I believe, of the Knudsen era at Ford when Fords got a bit of GM look, especially on the insides. Look at that sculpted dash, especially on the passenger side and you'll see GM all over it. A bit of a shock for Ford loyalists at the time and the beginning of the slide to the bottom in the mid 70's.
I'd still take the Galaxie here.

Three on the tree for me.
    I'd let that exterior be.
    Seat blankets are virtually free.
    How happy I would be
    With 200 glorious CID!

The Galaxie may be better looking and ultimately more desirable, but $8K is a lot of change for what is still a humdrum car.
Now, $2K maybe for that all original stripped down Fairlane? That's better. The only issue I take is the seller's assertion that it needs restored. No, it simply needs to be maintained and driven. It's pretty much fine as is, although that roof & trunk rust might need some attention.

As between these two particular vehicles, I would take the Fairlane, if only because it is the more honestly presented one. I would really like to know what possessed someone to put green seats in the otherwise blue interior of that '69.
However, my reaction to both of these cars is that I would rather have the previous year's model of each. The '64 Fairlane and '68 Galaxie are both great looking cars, inside and out. These, not so much. They are both transitional designs leading up to the bigger models that followed, and somehow they come off stodgy.

Green seats in a blue car usually mean that green was the best set found in the junkyard to replace the broken seats. For those who haven't had the experience, replacing seats (especially bench seats) in a non-luxury car from about 1985 and earlier usually took about ten minutes unless the bolts got rust-frozen.
Ubiquitous power seats, seat-mounted sensors, seat heaters (appreciated by spouses and SO's in cold winters)seat-mounted airbags and jamming unrelated stuff like amps and computer modules under the front seats makes for exceptionally annoying R&R.
Also, when Chevy-Olds–Buick-Cadillac or Ford-Mercury-Lincoln used the same body pan across brands, you could do like I did and upgrade the "meh" front seat in your Chevy Citation with the "slightly less awful" one from the Buick Skylark or Pontiac Phoenix of the same model year(s).

Galaxie. But I'm not sure it's 6x the Fairlane.

May I vote for "neither"? 45 years from now, this argument will be expressed as "Which do you want, a 2013 Camry V6 automatic, or a 2012 Corolla with a stick?" These were the boring, average family cars of their day, and I wouldn't have the slightest desire to drive either of them.

I recognise that thought, but nostalgia is a strange thing. Currently, I am lusting over an early 80's Mazda 929, and I even find the occasional 70's Corolla or Datsun interesting. Cars that were never intended to excite anyone. On the other hand, my idea of automobile heaven is an original as-new 1972 Volvo 145.
And when it comes to these two fine examples: I'd love to own any of them with the underpinnings of a 2012 manual Camry. The looks and some of the feel of a proper car combined with a no-worries daily drivability. A dream, if an unorthodox one.

Neither really do it for me as they are the least atractive years of their respective models. If I had to choose one of them I'd go for the Fairlane since its a 2dr.

On the Fairlane I see sheet metal screws on the back of the rear wheel openings, like someone removed a set of mud flaps. Also, I don't get the aqua carpet with the tan interior – the carpet should be tan. What a weird combination. As for the '69, the seats need to be re-done in the correct blue. Having the complete seats changed out makes me think the mileage is 135k, not 35k. That car is worth maybe 4k or 5k, but not 8k.

Ok, not to hijack a thread, but is there some automatic function within car ads (on any board/forum/website/etc.) that automatically eliminates "to be" from the post??? I cringe every time I see "..needs restored." Surely a gajillion people can be that grammatically challenged!
Did the ad read "…just needs to be restored" and the almightly computer program eliminate the "to be" to save space, storage, RAM, pixels…much like we used to shorten the year (ex: 1973 to "73")?
Jesus H…it's annoying as all hell.

The '65 Fairlane made me think of this long-ago National Lampoon article:
