This is the Genesis G70 wagon. Genesis calls it a Shooting Brake but I will not be doing that since a true shooting brake is a two-door wagon, not a four-door wagon. Pedantry aside, this thing rocks… and it’s never ever coming here. Well, at least not until someone imports one in the future but that’s quite a ways off.
The exterior lines are fantastic in a polarizing sort of way. I really like that Genesis has struck out and found its own styling well from which to draw. Every new vehicle has a cohesive familial style that works great as a group and fits each individual model as well. And this G70 wagon is no exception.
On the inside, it’s what you expect from a current Genesis model. A nice available pop of color, good seats, and nicely laid out controls.
Back outside, Genesis plans to offer 12 different colors and a range of paint finishes. You can choose between solid, metallic, matte, and pearlescent. That’s just downright fun in a time when luxury automakers typically shy away from the bright or unique.
As for the mechanicals, there’s a Sport package that plops on Brembo brakes and a limited-slip diff. You have a MacPherson setup up front and a multi-link rear as well as adaptive dampers. With respect to power, there’s nothing crazy though as Genesis offers two different 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engines and a 2.2-liter diesel mill.
The gas engine produces either 193 horsepower or 242 horsepower. The diesel cranks out nearly 200 horsepower but more importantly generates 325 lb-ft of torque. The gearbox employed here is an in-house developed 8-speed box.
Yes, it’s a rear-wheel-drive wagon with great style and packaging. No, you can’t buy it here. And yes, I understand why Genesis wouldn’t even consider offering it. The wagon isn’t dead yet, but it is quickly fading from dealer availability. It’s often a special-order only item and soon it will be a “Sorry, we don’t carry that anymore” machine.
