Showdown: Unlikely Rival Wagons Edition

2007 Magnum SRT8 for sale (1)

BMW people are not Chrysler SRT people, and vice-versa. Neither would cross shop the other product with any seriousness, because, well, obviously. And yet, five and ssix years on, we find a Dodge Magnum SRT8 and BMW 535xi Touring with comparable prices and mileage.

In one corner we have an exquisitely engineered all-weather tourer with a turbocharged 3.0 straight six. The other contains an casually assembled, awkwardly styled bruiser riding on an outdated Mercedes chassis. The BMW might break your heart with maintenance bills, but the Magnum might just turn your stomach. One will kick you in the teeth with torque, the other will turn any mountain journey into a joyride.

Let’s see some details after the jump.

With 43k miles and 420hp on tap, the Magnum is probably the more Hooniverse choice here (we’re an adjective now). Of the many slights against mid-2000s Chrysler products, “overengineered” is not one of them. When (not if) the Dodge breaks, parts should be available, cheap, and installed in your own garage. Until that day comes, you’ll be able to enjoy decent cargo capacity, a sweet V8 burble and even sweeter power curve. Just don’t spend too much time touching the interior plastics, mmmmkay? Personally, I loved the time I spent in the SRT8 Cherokee. Aside from some (fake?) Viper wheels, this one’s been spared the cruel fate of crappy customization that many of [sc:ebay itemid=”300919742438″ linktext=”its brothers met” ].

I can only imagine the experience of an engineering design review at BMW. “Unteringenieur, how can we get an additional 3% more [power, efficiency, weight reduction] from this design?” “well, Herr Doktor Zuffenmiserhousen, I could double the number of components, reduce the serviceability, and increase costs by 40%” “Exzellent!” (This all culminated with the triple-turbo 550d M Sport). This Autobahn bomber sports a twin-turbo, variable valve timing equipped straight six delivering 300hp through an all-wheel-drive system that’s always played second fiddle to Audi’s. Not exactly a screamer, but easily boosted to ludicrous speed with some aftermarket tweaks. This example sports a refreshingly unique combo of grey exterior on light tan leather on light grey wood interior, along with rear windows you can actually see out of. While this one’s a slushbox, manuals do occasionally pop up from time to time. Maybe pretend this is one of those.

Having maintained an American car, and attempted to maintain a BMW, I'll grit my teeth and take the Magnum…
…and try my best to forget the comfy, accommodating, and well built nature of the BMW interior…

My thoughts almost exactly…. While I havent had the pleasure of maintaining a BMW Im sure the way it eats up miles would make it somwhat worth the matenince. The Taxi like materials of Chryco vehicles of this vintage is what let them down. Im sure the magnum is a decent drive though.

Agreed. The newer Fiaysler vehicles are surprisingly nice inside, but these still suffered from a severe case of the cheapness. But you still can't argue with that kind of power…

But the LX platform isn't an outdated Benz chassis! It's a Chrysler chassis with some outdated Benz bits tacked on! Suspension, mostly!
That said, by virtue of them both being two-pedal cars, I'd go with the Magnum, for the brute force and all that (great seats too). Got to borrow a 300C SRT-8 for a night a couple years back, and even having the bad luck on driving it on the year's first snow fall, it was still fun.

Oh, and if I'm getting Euro wagon with a straight-six, I'm getting one with great seats

+1 on that one. My 2 ct about BMW-ownership: Friends who have bought 5-series station wagons, a total statistical population of 2, have had their share of economic nightmares. It's not that there was so much broken on them, considering the cars were 10+ years old. What was troubling was that every single fix was very costly – both in parts and work. One of them got the ultimate embarrassment when his beautiful 5 wouldn't start and I had to help him with my rusted-out and butt-ugly, but yet overwhelmingly perfect 1971 Volvo 145. He went straight to Toyota and bought an almost-new Avensis.

I really love the looks of those bmws… and since in my country they both are about equally exotic and expensive, lets take the bmw.
Honest question, is the hood on the dodge opened? that looks like a gap too big for any car.

The dodge was in a frontal collision in 2011.

It's a shame that the Magnum did not survive to see the 2011 redesign of this platform. It's amazing how much a modest downward shift in the beltline improves the car.

Magnum all day, cheap parts and all. I don't care for the claustrophobic feel of the small windows and high belt lines, but the view over the hood is what really counts, and it's great. The Hemi doesn't hurt, either.

A bit off topic, but what's the current choice for a big and nice, homemade station wagon in the US? What would the Hooniverse's readership go for? Ford Flex?
…and I had to have a look at the local offerings. Norwegian prices are always a bit adventurous, so how much are you prepared to pay for a 2005 3.5 SXT AWD with 80000km on the clock?

Try 60000$. All that for scary plastics and tiny windows.

With such prices even for modest imports (there is no local car industry to protect, though), one can safely assume that that door could be the only thing on that car with original paint on…

If I were to buy a new wagon it would be a Ford Flex with EcoBoost. As an added bonus with some minor tweaks they can be fast as heck.
Similar Magnums as above are about 5K US$ on ebay.

While I would take a Magnum over the BMW just for the maintenance costs alone I wouldn't touch this one with a ten foot pole. The area where this is from got pummeled by Hurricane Sandy so it might have unreported water damage, the front end was fixed badly and to top it off "I also have a set of DUB chrome 22” wheels with Hankook Ventus TS tires. Looks fantastic on the car" which equals crapped up at some point in its life.

Uggg. Near impossible to find a magnum, 300C, or challenger in my area that hasnt been subbed, 24ed and horribly "custom" painted. The worst offenders are usually V-6 cars.

2. Tim Odell Avatar
Tim Odell

The V6 cars get crappy crap mods, but the SRT8 cars almost get it worse: high-dollar, extensive, built-in mods that they want $$$ for and are much harder to rip out.

8. IronBallsMcG Avatar

I'd cross shop these two, but I'd probably end up with the BMW. My hatred for the Magnum interiors overshadows my fear of the BMW maintenance costs. Doesn't mean I'd be right or happy in the long run, but that's what I would do.

As much as I appreciate the Magnum for what it is, I appreciate the BMW for what the Magnum isn't. They're both new enough to allow for am aftermarket "warranty".

If the BMW had been an E39 540i Touring, this would have been a much more difficult choice. But I hate E60s, the N54 of that vintage has more problems than I'd ever want to tackle, and have I mentioned how ugly E60s are? And I've always had a soft spot for the Magnum, especially in SRT trim, so the Dodge definitely gets the nod here. Especially since I could do the Charger nose conversion to it 😀

300C nose for me.

Ha, a buddy of mine just sold his Magnum R/T because he was tired of it nickel and diming him to death. He had all sorts of problems with the suspension and steering, and decided he was tired of it.
What did he replace it with? An E30 BMW. I questioned how this was an upgrade, as a 30 year old German car would be likely to need some attention, too.

1. Tim Odell Avatar

Sounds like something I'd do.
Then later write several articles about how it was a bad idea.

1. LTDScott Avatar

He's kinda coming to the same realization too, especially because he's on the east coast and had to pay a premium for a clean bodied car.

BMW = pretentious and expensive to maintain
Magnum = crappy interior that is uncomfortable on a long drive. After renting one I loved the concept and would like a sporty wagon, but there is really a narrow range of choices in the US.
The two choices provided are really the only two and the BMW has the manual transmission. I don't know anyone named Buffy and would look more ridiculous than usual with a sweater tied around my shoulders. That rules that car out.
Holden = Just right. Clean looks, comfortable, and refined(ish) performance. It would have to be a manual transmission.
<img src="http://cdn.caradvice.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/ss-v-090-1024×768.jpg">
Although getting one of those in the US might be impossible. Maybe build my own. The rumble of the engine should cancel out the smug factor.

As the current owner of a non-molested R/T, I'd go with the Magnum. If you have the right previous owner, the car isn't scary besides the crappy plastics. The previous ownder of my car loved it, always dealer maintained with Mopar parts, and he spent his money on tasteful engine upgrades. So instead of flashy rims that I don't care about, I got headers, exhaust, and cold air intake.
