On this date in 1873 San Francisco inaugurated cable car service in the city. The trollies have since become synonymous with the city by the bay, and while perhaps not the most efficient mechanism for moving people around, they continue to serve as both transportation and tourist draw. In fact, if you are a baby boomer you likely were read the book that documents the City’s efforts to keep the cable cars in operation – Virginia Lee Burton’s Maybelle the Cable Car. If it wasn’t read to you, I highly recommend you seek it out. But not before participating in this week’s Mystery Car. We’re not perhaps quite as grand a tradition as San Francisco’s cable cars are, but we’re getting there! Remember to include, make, model, likely engine, and year range for full credit.
