On this date in 1948, the Land Rover Series 1 debuted at the Amsterdam Motor Show. Maurice Wilkes, then head designer at Rover had employed a Military-spec Jeep on his farm, which surprisingly didn’t prove durable enough! That led him to advocate within Rover the building of what would become the iconic British alternative. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!
Today’s Mystery Car may or may not be some sort of Rover, that will be up to you to discern. Whatever it is, make sure to provide the make and model when you post your guess. Best of luck!

  1. Curse you, Robert. I want to know what the last one was! I went through every page of the American and Foreign Car Spotter’s Guides trying to find that two-tone treatment.
For this one I’m going with Alfa Romeo Spider, 2.0 liter “Nord” engine.

      1. I only have the “Imported” Spotter’s Guide. I might have found it if I had a Foreign Spotter’s Guide. In the former, the alphabet only goes to “Wartburg”.

    1. My guess as well. The ribbed rubber floormat and chrome side trim gave it away, assuming we’re right.

  2. Triumph TR-5: 2.5L I6 (~140hp), built only for like 20 months in the late sixties, say around 1968.

  3. MG RV8
Edit: Missed the “not MG Family” part.
Edit: Aston Martin’s prototype using the MGB as a base for their new roadster.

  4. Renault Caravelle. Please be right… I have invested far more time than this is worth… Because Hoon.

  5. I think this might be something I’ve owned. A Lotus Elise with the 1.8L Toyota 2ZZ-GE. The red has the orangish hue that the “Ardent Red” has, the curve of the panel is highly exaggerated, like on the Elise, and the ribbed flooring matches the floor behind the mats. The chrome strip doesn’t match, and the orange peel in the top left is suspect.
