I don’t care how retro they may be, or that VW officially refers to them as the New Beetle, that modern era, front-engine, front wheel drive car will never earn the right to be called a Bug.

Superbug is resistant to antibiotics.
There's not much to go on from this angle, but what little is visible of the dash and windshield suggests this is a Beetle, not a Super Beetle.
Tail lights.
Nope. I've owned a '74 Beetle and a '77 Beetle, neither a Super, both US-spec. They're the same.
I don't know why I hate them, because I suppose they are useful on ID'ing the car, but I really HATE license plate brackets that say the year & model of the car.
I really don't know why, it's just a pet peeve. (More so when it's on a '57 Bel Air or '65 Mustang…DUH)
A year attached to a beetle can be nice. Without it all that a trained(or at least my trained) eye can tell is that it is newer than 1974. 74 through 79 in the US all looked "identical."
Not related, just putting it here for future reference:

It'll be relevant for something, someday.
"WTF?"
Here, this is for when we get great automotive news like a diesel Miata or shooting brake BRZ or something.

First thing I noticed: the "ewwabug" license plate. First thing my wife noticed: the skeleton in the back seat.
Missed the skeleton, paused at the black doodad over the vents, noticed the license plate.
First thing I thought of after seeing the plate:

Single exhaust? It has a catalyst.
Oh, and a little EMPI sticker on the back window.
The single exhaust indicates fuel injection, not necessarily a catalyst.
This one looks like it has a blanked-off modified dual exhaust under it instead of an original single-exhaust muffler, anyway, so I suspect it's been converted to carburetion.
Okay, I'm thinking of the ones with the bustle under the engine lid, with the little vertical vents. Wish I could find a picture now.
Yep, that's clearly not a feature.
Wait… do you mean the New Beetle or the new Beetle
Wow, just happened to wear this ball cap to work this morning…

My favorite VW Beetle vanity plate was "Feature" as in "that's not a bug it's a feature"
76 Beetles imported to the US were all Super Beetles with Fuel Injection with a single tail pipe. The black vents behind the rear quarter windows I believe started in 1970 and the round tail lights were on all US spec Beetles from 1974 onward. About the only choice in 76 was sedan or convertible, or transmission.
Not true. "Standard" (actually Deluxe) Beetle sedans were imported through 1977 but Super Beetle sedans weren't imported after 1975. I owned a '77. It was fuel injected with a single tailpipe, but had a "flat" windshield, "flat" dashboard, and torsion-bar front suspension. It was distinctly not a Super. All of the US-market convertibles were Super by then, however.
The best thing about this posting is that this is my wife's car. And we have seen about a hundred or more people taking pictures behind us while stopped at red lights and such but this is the first pic I've found of it online. And owned 9 beetles is correct.
