Is the Market for #VanLife Vans Finally Cooling Off?

You can spend so much damn money on a van. Typically, a properly built overland or #vanlife machine starts north of $110-$125k, and the sky is the limit from there. So you can understand my surprise when I stumbled across what looks to be a decent weekend warrior-type Sprinter van build. While trolling Craigslist, I found what looks to be a sweet machine in search of a new home and the price stopped me in my tracks.

Now, I’m not saying this is cheap nor affordable. But relative to its own market, this seems like a pretty decent deal right here. The asking price sits at $62,500 (obo) for a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter. It shows just 49,500 miles on the clock for the diesel powertrain, has the desirable high-roof setup, and is completely ready to go.

Per the listing, this Sprinter has auxiliary heating, upgraded springs, decent General Grabber tires, a gray and fresh water tank, a fridge, sink, and counter prep space. You also get 320 watts of solar power, a shore power plugin spot, a pair of 100-amp hour deep cycle batteries, and a smart monitoring system, so you know your power is flowing how it needs to flow.

Clearly, someone needs to get this thing out of their life. Because that price tag suggests it’s primed for a quick sale. But this is also a sign that this market is cooling off. Overlanding is still hot, of course, but perhaps the van side of the equation is less attractive. After all, the cost of entry on these is very high, whereas an old 4Runner and a tent might just be all you need to get your kicks.

What say you… is this priced to ramble on or is it still a sky-high pipe dream? Here’s the link to the listing.

That’s a great price. Just a high roof 2017 Sprinter around that mileage mark will run you around $40K-$45K. If you can DIY the interior you might be able to hit a price point like this, but it’s unlikely. Especially since the tech stuff isn’t exactly free.

RV traffic here keeps going up by double digit percentage points every year. The result is totally undrivable roads during daytime in summer. You get nasty sights like this on ferry ports, too.

My Leaf logs my commute to 17-19 minutes in winter, on icy roads with wind blowing from 12 directions at once. A summertime return is hard pressed to be done within 30 minutes because the RV crowd abides by its sworen oath to never go above 60% of the legal speed limit.

    These things make me sick.
