Hooniverse Asks- If Driverless Cars are Okay, How About Pilotless Planes?

otto-the-auto-pilot Last week we asked for your opinion regarding driverless cars and for the most part, you seemed to feel they were inevitable even if you weren’t too happy about the idea. As you would imagine, the roads aren’t the only place that these robot chauffeurs are going to be showing up in the near future, and for today’s query I want to know how comfortable you might be flying the friendly skies knowing that the piloting is being handled by a computer, and not a guy in a shiny-brimmed cap. If you think about it, a lot of a commercial flight’s time in the air is presently handled by the auto pilot, and it’s pretty much take-off, landing, and the decisions to divert around bad weather or to make an emergency landing due to a dog having taken multiple dumps in the economy class, that are handled by the guys in the shiny-brimmed caps. Also, eliminating the flight crew and all the stuff that they require to keep the plane in the air can lower costs by freeing up that space for paying passengers. Would you however, fully trust a computer to handle something as important as your life when it’s hurtling through the air at more than 400 knots and 35,000 feet without the comfort of having a guy in a shiny-brimmed cap there as a backup? If the technology is coming – and you know it is – how do you feel about pilotless planes? Image of Otto: Dubsism
