Guy makes billions off wrecked cars and we just keep looking at his website

The man in this picture, standing in front of his car collection, is Willis Johnson. You may have never heard of him but you sure as heck have heard of his website, probably have spent too much time on it, you and may have even bought stuff from it. Mr. Johnson founded Copart Inc. Yes, that Copart where you go search for your favorite wrecked exotic and/or next crapcan racer.

Copart, which has a market cap of about $20 billion, has earned Mr. Johnson a net worth of about $2 billion over the years. That’s pretty good for someone who does what many of us have done so many times – buy and sell crapcan cars. Read more on him and on Copart on Bloomberg. The article talks of the company’s beginnings, how it stood out from its competitors, and the changing market of wrecked cars.

East Coast Editor. Races crappy cars and has an unhealthy obsession with Eastern Bloc cars. Current fleet: Ford Bronco, Lexus GX 470, and a Buick Regal crapcan racecar.

  1. “Copart shares […] have surged 81% this year”
Yikes! But good for them, it’s a worthwhile business good for everyone.
