1992 BMW E34 M5 Nürburgring Edition: the coolest family saloon in town

You know it’s May when all the nicest cars come out. This exceptionally clean 1992 BMW M5 Nür belongs to the BMW mechanic that checks out my E34 when needed, and it’s certainly a pleasant sight parked on the street corner.

The M5 is getting good use, and you can see a child seat in the back. The coolest family car I can think of, surely.

The mechanic used to own this M5 some time earlier, and bought it back just recently. He drove a 6-speed E39 540i M-sport touring for quite a while, and sold it to a friend of mine this winter. He knows his BMW:s, and if a good one is in existence he’s not afraid to get it back.

The Nür edition of the M5 gives you a special interior and a bunch of visual upgrades, including the graphite-coloured enhancements. I really like these 18″ wheels.

I know I’m biased as an E34 driver, but the saloon is simply one of the best-looking German cars I know. In M5 guise with a special colour, it’s unbeatably cool.

Nice car. For me, BMW sedan design reached its pinnacle in the e34.

The E36 is my personal favorite. At Englistown last weekend there was a techno violet E36 sedan with a 302 and centrifugal supercharger stuffed in.

So true. E34 was the best looking 5er, and E32 the most handsome big BMW. E38 and E39 are too bland to make a real impact.
And, if that's not enough to float your boat, E34 M5 has some super-cool under-bonnet machinery to offer, too.

I might accept your argument about the 5ers, because while I personally prefer the E39, the E34 is a beautiful car. But the E38 is FAR and away the best looking 7 Series ever produced, and IMO the best looking BMW, full stop.

Well, should've written "in my opinion".
In BMW's model policy there usually seems to be evolution after revolution. That is, every second model takes a big leap in design, followed by a model that looks like "facelift plus". Think about E21/E30, E36/E46, E90/F30, E12/EE28, E34/E39, E60/F10, E32/E38, E65/F01.
It's just that I usually tend to prefer original design, considering not only BMW here. Facelifts are often compromising original design ideas for the sake of keeping looks up-to-date with minimal costs. Actually, BMW does pretty delicate work compared to many other manufacturers.
And of course I'm biased here. My friend has a late E32 740i in dark purple hue and with light grey leather, and I just have to admire this Ercole Spada masterpiece.

The M-Parallel is such a great wheel. There isn't a BMW made that it doesn't enhance. And while it wouldn't have been my choice, that's one of the few cars I find can wear purple very well.

I am damn close to pulling the trigger on a bone stock 93' 535i with full intentions to give it the M5 treatment (bumper package, seats, etc) and an LSx. This makes me want to do it even more.

Cool cars, and probably one of the more affordable ways to get a car with an I6 with itb's. Couldn't help but notice the Focus CC in the background, can't remember the last time i've seen one of those. Must be years ago.
Also Antti, are you still going to Classic Motorshow this weekend? I'll be there on saturday around 9 to snap some pictures and have a look at the cars before the show opens to the public, and then probably wander around the parking lot looking at the other cool cars.

I'm on the fence about it. I had a ride scheduled but turns out it's already tomorrow morning. I might just grow a pair and drive there on Sat – especially since my Sapporo passed inspection on Tue – but I'll see about that.

Just got back, definitely a show worth going to. Plenty of interesting 60's cars inside, from all over the world. The parking lot was at least as good, with what must have been hundreds of cars everything from Rolls to Wartbug, Migdets to old buses and trucks. Some left early, and then others arrived. So actually the parking lot was more of a cruise with cars parked in neat lines.
If you didn't make it to the show I'll post some pictures in the Forums on tuesday probably, after i get them developed and scanned. Actually I will post some anyway. And now i'm just rambling, time for some beer.

Good to hear. I skipped going, which probably was a mistake; then again, had I shot every vehicle there I would've drowned the website for the coming weeks. 🙂

Hah 😀 Does the parking lot of a car show qualify as "parked on the street"? If yes then I have about four rolls worth 😉 Might even have a few cars obscure enough for Mystery Car if user submitted pictures are accepted..
Also not all cars were from the sixties, there was also a really nice 80's Japanese coupe from an unnamed manufacturer that might have been Mitsubishi 😉

          2. julkinen Avatar

But of course! I had a friend man the booth at the BMW club area, and he mentioned there was a certain silver diamond coupe just next to them 🙂

Yup. I took a couple of pictures of it and thought it was a great idea to shoot a 60's themed show on film, but oh the wait to get the rolls developed… It's both annoying and really exciting at the same time 🙂

I think that exact car was also featured in a certain Finnish classic car magazine some time ago, and if memory serves it's a French import that's absolutely pristine.

Yeah i think it was this one.. Can't be too many pristine -81 Sapporos in this country. http://www.klassikot.fi/1777/mitsubishi-sapporo-g

Definitely. I really need to get an affordable classic. I have a -89 740 that needs new brakes and some minor rust repairs, but it's not exactly "fun". Not in summer anyway… 😉

          8. julkinen Avatar

My 518i stops being fun when the roads clear from ice… After that point it's all about fuel economy.

          9. Dean Bigglesworth Avatar

It's fun to wring out every last bit of power the car has to give… but at least you have some kind of chance to get decent mileage out of it. I get about 12l/100km at best, with all of it's 116hp 😀 That is 350tkm+ ago 116hp. Saying the acceleration is glacial would be giving it too much credit.

          10. julkinen Avatar

I can eke out 6,5l/100km when I avoid towns completely. That also means being aware of the throttle usage, and where the wind blows. If I commute in it, I give it the beans all the time and do not worry about fuel consumption.
