General Motors has been cranking out its legendary small-block V8 since 1954. The first vehicle to carry that mill? A 1955 Chevy truck as part of the Task Force lineup of pickups. It was a 4.3-liter V8 that cranked out 180 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Fast forward to today, and GM looks back on what it believes to be around 113 million small-block V8s that have been produced.
The largest and most powerful naturally aspirated variant exists today under the snout of the 2025 Silverado. That would be the 6.2-liter engine, which produces 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. But the small block has been used in so many different vehicles. It’s a sports car engine, it’s a truck engine, it powers wagons, commercial equipment, and tons of boats have used Chevy small-blocks.
For some of you, it might be hard to single out a favorite small-block powered machine, but if you can think of something specific, sound off in the comments below.
