It was another one of those serendipitous YouTube moments that led me to this awesome video. I was looking for some homemade truck camper ideas, when this gem popped up. I don’t see myself as a Beetle guy, but having drooled over so many Westfalias, Syncros, Wolfsburgs, and Sambas, I can see the appeal of a small, simple car with a similarly efficient camper trailer in tow. Imagine pulling a trailer that you couldn’t jackknife! I’ve been to some pretty big VW shows in the past, but never seen or heard of this. How about you? Check it out.

These campers are out there, they just can’t make it to the shows on time due to their 24 mph top speed. I can’t imagine trying to tow with a Bug.

About 15 years ago, I saw a similar concept at a used car lot. Instead of a Beetle, it had a Malaise luxobarge up front, attached at the center of the roof. This made the camper part have an excessively long tongue, with worse utilization of space than for a camper designed to hook to a gooseneck pickup. Add in the fact that if something happened to the tow vehicle the trailer was stranded until the owner rigged a hitch onto the roof of another car, and it needed two parking spots when not in use, and it’s no surprise the rig sat on the car lot for a couple years.

If you like the concept, but want more space – try out a Flexhom on your Suburban…

That combo pulling the boat looks like a nightmare. That said, my inner child wants to ride in the “upstairs” section of that trailer while Dad pilots the ‘burban.

The kind of invention no-one wanted. Leaving it abbandonned by the roadside is a crime. Is there somewhere a museum for this kind of mis-understandings?
