Motorsports Weekend Guide: June 26 to June 28

MWG_2015
Welcome to Hooniverse’s look ahead to who’s racing around the world over the next couple days. This weekend brings two of the world’s most famous hill climbs, American sports cars at two different classic American racetracks, and the finale of the FIA’s first all-electric racing series. There’s plenty more action from around the world, so check out the whole list after the jump.
Want more information on a series mentioned below? Click here for Hooniverse’s Massively Oversized Guide to Motorsports 2015, which will tell you all you need to know (and then some).

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Pikes Peak remains one of the oldest hill cimbs in the world and it’s certainly one the most grandiose, a 13-mile run up one of America’s most-famous mountains. Purists will decry the current iteration of the race as sacrilege now that the whole run is paved, but that will have the effect of drawing in faster and faster cars. Of note this year: Friend of Hooniverse Justin Wilson driving a repurposed HPD ARX-04B Le Mans Prototype up the mountain in the Unlimited Division.
In fact, it’s really impossible to describe all the cool stuff going up Pikes Peak, but here’s a very short list of the things I find interesting: Rhys Millen driving a 1,367-horsepower electric hill climb beast against Monster Tajima’s E-RUNNER, Tetsuya Yamano driving a four-wheel-steer Honda Fit, Paul Dallenbach in his Dallenbach Special with massive aero elements, Mike Ryan’s perennial Freightliner, two completely stacked Time Attack classes, Danny George in an Exomotive Exocet (Miata kit car), a Trans-Am Series tubeframe Camaro, and of course one Chevrolet “Camero” on the entry list.

Goodwood Festival of Speed

Across the pond, a bunch of nutters will drive priceless cars up Lord March’s long, winding driveway for the Goodwood Festival of Speed’s Hill Climb. Every year comes with a theme and this year it’s apparently “Flat-out and Fearless.” I’m not entirely sure what that means, but the real important things to remember are (1) that the cars are all classics or modern competitors driven by world-class drivers and personalities and (2) it all streams for free on the web so you see museum pieces being driven at usually about eight tenths or so.
As with Pikes Peak, there’s just too much to list, but here are some of the high points: Ken Block in the Hoonicorn Mustang, Ben Collins (aka The Stig) in a brand new Ford GT350R Mustang, Jenson Button in a bunch of McLarens, land-speed racer Andy Green in the Bloodhound’s Jaguar support car, Damon Hill in his dad’s Lotus 49, J.J. Lehto in a McLaren P1 GTR, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason in a priceless Auto Union D-Type pre-war grand prix car, Rod Millen in his Toyota Celica Pikes Peak Special, Richard Petty in his 1970 Superbird (!), and 81-year-old John Surtees driving an old F1 car and an old Norton race motorcycle.
Oh, and the Beast of Turin will be there to frighten the children and its driver alike.
Is it a bit sentimental and wanky? Yes. Does that make it not worth watching? No. Just watch this, you won’t be sorry. The broadcast last year seemed to include the broadcast team knowing when to shut up and let the classic cars do the talking.

Tudor United Sportscar Championship: Six Hours of the Glen

After a short turnaround for a lot of drivers from the 24 Hours of Le Mans just two weeks ago, the IMSA series returns to action for the Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International. The classic circuit hosts the fourth-longest race on the schedule and it’s also part of the North American Endurance Championship series-within-a-series. Ford’s plans to race the new Ford GT in TUSC should be a topic of conversation with some sources reporting that the Ford program—run by Chip Ganassi Racing and Multimatic Racing—may shake up the world of GT drivers.
Anyway, the race at the Glen should be a good one with a tight championship battle in the Prototype class: Action Express and Spirit of Daytona are tied in the championship headed to the race. In GTLM, Corvette Racing, fresh off their eighth win at Le Mans, leads the BMW drivers by two points in what is primed to be yet second half of the season full of quality GT racing.

Support race(s): Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. Cooper Tires Prototype Lites. Porsche GT3 Cup USA. Lamborghini Super Trofeo.
Coverage: Sunday @ 10 a.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 and moving to FOX Sports 2 @ 2:30 p.m. ET. Streaming audio of all sessions on IMSA Radio.  All support races – Check IMSA.com and FansChoice.tv.

Formula E: London

The FIA’s all-electric series wraps up its inaugural season this weekend with its first and only two-race weekend in London’s Battersea Park. As far as Formula E circuits go, it looks like it should provide good racing with two, maybe even as many as four good passing zones. Nelson Piquet Jr. leads Lucas Di Grassi in the championship by 17 points with Piquet coming on strong lately. A strong showing in Saturday’s race could make Piquet—the only driver with more than one race wins—the first Formula E champion. Elsewhere in field, IndyCar driver Simona di Silvestro will make her debut for Andretti Autosport and sports car whiz Oliver Turvey gets his first crack as Piquet’s teammate.

Coverage: Saturday @ 10:30 a.m. on FOX Sports 1 & Sunday @ 10:30 a.m. on FOX Sports 2.

Formula Drift: The Gauntlet (Wall Speedway)

Last year, The Gauntlet signified the season’s mid-point, but it is only the fourth race of 10 in 2015 with the addition of rounds in Japan and China. This has to date been a wide-open season with no one driver exhibiting consistency over the first three rounds. Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis leads by just 15 points over Ryan Tuerck while defending champion Chris Forsberg seems to be rolling into shape, having improved in each of the last two rounds.

Coverage: Saturday @ 5 p.m. ET on Formula Drift site (Free streaming).

IndyCar: MAVTV 500 (Auto Club Speedway |  Fontana, CA)

A chaotic and rainy last round in Toronto found an incredible 1-2 finish for one of the series’ smaller teams, Carpenter Fisher Hartman Racing, just a week after both cars DNF’d in Texas. It was Josef Newgarden’s second win of the year while teammate Luca Filippi showed some incredibly bold driving en route to the drubbing they put on the big dogs from Penske, Ganassi, and Andretti. This weekend finds the IndyCar crew in a completely different locale where they’ll race around Auto Club’s very fast two-mile oval. Since the series returned to Fontana in 2012, three different drivers have won, including Filippi’s oval-driving counterpart and team owner, Ed Carpenter. If I were a betting man, I’d say that Scott Dixon’s steady performance on ovals this year makes him the favorite.

NASCAR Sprint Cup: Toyota/Save Mart 350 (Sonoma Raceway)

While IndyCar heads to an oval, NASCAR runs its first of two road-course races in wine country. I went to this race last year and it was pretty darn good. The huge stock cars trying to whoa down as they climb the steep grade to Turn 2 makes for excellent viewing. Nobody has driven as well over the years at Sonoma as Jeff Gordon by a long way and while he’s struggled a bit in this his final year, he has to remain on the short list of drivers to watch.
Event page: Sprint Cup site. Sonoma site. Event page. Schedule. Entry List. Season Point(s). Live timing.
Support race(s): Carneros 200 (NASCAR K&N Pro Series West).
Coverage: Sunday @ 3 p.m. on FOX Sports 1. K&N West – July 1 @ 6 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network.

Pirelli World Challenge: Road America

It’s a full weekend of road racing with the endurance-racing IMSA series at Watkins Glen and the GT/Touring Car sprint series of World Challenge lapping Road America’s four-mile roller coaster. Olivier Beretta has led the championship for most of the year, but young gun Kevin Estre has become a real threat in his McLaren as he’s acclimated to the series. The same goes of defending champion Johnny O’Connell in his new Cadillac GT3 car and Ryan Eversley in his RealTime Racing Acura TLX-GT. This is shaping up to be a good title fight down to the end of the year.

Support race(s): Maserati Trofeo.
Coverage: Streaming all weekend on World-ChallengeTV.com. See schedule for times.

DTM: Norisring

The German touring car series heads to the esoteric street circuit in Nuremberg. The short 1.4-mile circuit is long and thin, so to speak, with hairpins at both ends and while there are officially eight turns, the real number is closer to five. That means very fast lap times and lots of passing into the heavy braking zones. It’s rained occasionally at this race, which livens up the field a bit.
Event page: DTM site. Event page with schedule. Entry List. Live timing.
Support race(s): FIA Formula 3 European Championship. Porsche Carrera Cup Germany. Audi TT Cup.
Coverage: Possibly streaming live on series website. Also Sunday @ noon ET on CBS Sports Network. Euro F3 – Live streaming  on series site.

MotoGP: Dutch Grand Prix (TT Assen)

MotoGP remains a top billing in world motorsport this year with Yamaha teammates Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi topping the championship standings. Lorenzo’s home-track win in Barcelona gave him a one-point advantage over Rossi while everyone else in the field languished behind. This weekend, the teammate duel heads to Assen, a track designed specifically for motorcycle racing more than a half-century ago.

Support race(s): Moto2. Moto3.
Coverage: Saturday @ 7:30 a.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.

British Touring Car Championship: Croft

Familiar names top the points tables in the BTCC heading into the Yorkshire round this weekend. Yes, that old villain Jason Plato leads Gordon Shedden by a point and just a couple back from there is Plato’s rival, Matt Neal. Really, Jason Plato is such a great gruff and dismissive racing villain that it’s easy to forget that he can pedal the hell out of a racecar.

Support race(s): Porsche Carrera Cup GB, MSA Formula Championship, Renault UK Clio Cup, Ginetta Junior Championship, Ginetta GT4 SuperCup.
Coverage: Delayed coverage on CBS Sports Network. Check listings.

World Touring Car Championship: France (Paul Ricard Circuit)

The WTCC’s big three from Citroen (Jose Maria Lopez, Yvan Muller, and Sebastien Loeb) took home all six podium spots from Slovakiaring’s two races. That left little but a few scraps for the factory Lada and Honda teams. The series heads to the blue-and-red runoff of Ricard in Le Castellet this weekend. It’s a high-speed track and it’s home turf for Citroen, but that will mean the other teams will be desperate to ruin the homecoming.

Support race(s): FIA European Touring Car Challenge.
Coverage: None in the U.S.

ARCA: Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 (Winchester Speedway | Winchester, IN)

Add another half-mile oval to ARCA’s busy short-track schedule with this race in Indiana. Young gun Grant Enfinger has looked great and like last year’s champion Mason Mitchell, is likely headed to NASCAR if not next year, then soon. Curiously enough, ARCA has live TV coverage for a race from a small oval. That’s a rarity.
Event page: ARCA site. Winchester site. Event page. Schedule. Entry List. Season Point(s).
Coverage: Sunday @ 2 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network.

NASCAR Whelen Euro Series: Tours Oval

Also on a short oval this weekend: NASCAR’s European cousin. The Tours Oval was at one time basically a glorified oval carved out of a French parking lot and while it’s still very much that, it’s been purpose built a bit with different banking on each side of the track and improved permanent facilities. Look for Aston Martin Racing driver Mathias Lauda in a car this weekend if you’re in France or watching the early-morning livestream.
Event page: WES site. Event page. Schedule. Entry List.

IHRA: Grand Bend

The International Hot Rod Association’s Pro-Am series earns its moniker this weekend with one of a couple trips north of the border this year to Grand Bend Raceway. I haven’t much followed this series so I can’t help you much with any relevant stories this weekend, but is only a bit northeast of Detroit. So that’s neat.
Event page: IHRA site. Grand Bend site. Event page. Schedule.
Coverage: Delayed coverage on MAVTV. See listings.

The Off-Road Championship: Crandon

The mostly-Midwest TORC series takes its short-track, big-track show to the madhouse in Wisconsin. Crandon is a staple of the TORC schedule and, from the video I’ve seen, a hell of a fun racetrack off the beaten path in the North Woods.
Event page: TORC site. Crandon Raceway site. Event page. Entry List with season Point(s).
Coverage: Streaming live on TORC YouTube channel. Delayed broadcast on FOX Sports 1 and 2. See dates/times here.

Ultra4 Racing: Badlands Off-Road Park (Attica, IN)

Not too far south, the Ultra4 championship invades the Badlands in Indiana, which sounds a bit like an oxymoron. Nevertheless, the mixed-surface conditions are a perfect match for Ultra4, where vehicles must be able to run at high-speed and to rock-crawl.
Event page: Ultra4 site. Attica site. Event page. Schedule. Entry List. Season Point(s).
Support race(s):
Coverage: Live stream on Ultra4 site.

World Cup for Cross Country Rallies: Italian Baja

Rally raids have been around for a long time, but it’s telling about the scale and scope of the Baja 1000 that international rally raids carry the “Baja” moniker. The Italian rally raid, which is part of the FIA’s series for them, takes place in the foothills of the Alps northeast of Venice, where the hilly terrain will put the big trucks, smaller trucks, quads, and bikes through their paces.
Event page: WCCCR site. Italy site. Schedule. Entry List. Season Point(s).
Coverage: None that I could find.

British Rallycross Championship: Mondello Park

British Rallycross is, as I say every time they have a race weekend, where short-track off-road racing started. The first events were held at Lydden Hill in the 1960s and it has since spread internationally with highly specialized, fire-breathing all-wheel-drive supercars. The modern British championship includes a supercar class, but you’ll also find a huge variety of machinery in a half-dozen or so classes. If you’re up early Saturday or Sunday, the free stream will give you heaps of entertainment over coffee and a donut.
Event page: BRX site. Mondello Park site. Event page. Schedule.Season Point(s).
Coverage: Saturday and Sunday @ 5:30 a.m. ET on BRX livestream.

European Truck Racing Championship: Nurburgring

The ETRC’s visit to the ‘ring has become the marquee truck race in the world. The Germans love their truck racing and the British national truck championship will tag along as a support series. It’s maybe not as grueling as the Nurburgring 24 (OK, definitely not as grueling), but I suspect it’s every bit as entertaining. The trucks will use the Grand Prix configuration, but how great would it be to see 20 of these five-ton beasts ripping around the Nordschleife? ile that away to “Some Day,” although hopefully sooner rather than later.
Event page: ETRC site. Nurburgring siteEntry List. Season Point(s).
Support race(s): British Truck Racing Association.
Coverage: Highlights and recaps on TruckRace.org.

European Rally Championship: Rally Ypres (Belgium)

The ERC’s annual visit to Belgium remains one of the longest-running rallies on any rally championship calendar. The tarmac rally through the Low Country is one of the easier rallies, though the substantial ditches and changing road and weather conditions can provide ample treachery for drivers who get too comfortable.
Event page: ERC site. Rally Ypres site. Event page. Schedule. Entry List. Season Point(s).
Coverage: Highlights and recaps on the ERC YouTube channel.

Canadian Rally Championship: Rallye Baie-de-Chaleurs

Antoine L’Estage is going to win this rally, just like he’s won the last seven or eight CRC events. The BDC is a mixed-surface rally held around Chaleur Bay (hence the name) near Richmond, New Brunswick, Canada, North America, Earth.
Event page: CRC site. BDC site. Schedule.
Coverage: None.

World Series by Renault: Red Bull Ring

Just a week after F1 graced the Austrian circuit, the open-wheel feeder series treks to Red Bull Ring. That might hurt attendance, although that’s seldom a real thing at WSBR events. The top Formula Renault 3.5 class has given Red Bull-sponsored drivers like Sebastien Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Daniil Kyvat, and Carlos Sainz Jr. the resumes to jump to F1, which likely has a lot to do with a visit to Red Bull’s home track.

Italian GT: Imola

The Italian GT series, like most national GT racing series, is a place for both pro drivers who go to work on their “off” weekends close to home and for amateur drivers looking to take a crack at a real tin-top machine. Names like Mirko Bortolotti and Nicolas Schirlo aren’t really household names for GT fans, but they typically are solid drivers practicing their craft. You may hear more about them soon enough.

World Racing League: Atlanta Motorsports Park

The WRL makes its maiden voyage to Atlanta Motorsports Park for a 12-hour slog around the rolling hills of the Georgia racetrack. The new country-club circuit has gotten rave reviews from those who have raced it and while its status as a club track probably makes it prohibitive for pro racing, the amateur races like this will be entertaining.

I’m going to be at the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb for the first time. I’m super stoked. I got to go to the practice session this morning, too- what a blast. Well worth getting up at 2 in the morning for. I took a short video I tried sharing, but I suck with phones apparently and couldn’t email it and couldn’t figure out how to upload to youtube.
Oh, also, Rhys Millen is either crazy and not afraid of death or really really good at his job. Or both. No one else was hanging out as wide and fast on the exits as him.

No live coverage of PPIHC this year? I swear that either last year or the year before, I watched it streaming from their site.

Two years ago when Red Bull was sponsoring Loeb’s and Millen’s unlimited-class cars going for the record, they brought their own TV crew and streaming site. There’s usually a couple of stationary webcams, though.

That’s the one I watched. I remember Red Bull being involved now. At least Goodwood is streamed…

At PRI last December, I actually ran into the guy whose company (can’t remember for the life of me the name of it) tried to stream PPIHC last year. He said they had nothing but problems with producing it and there were so many issues that he thought it would be a couple years until someone could do it reliably.
