This is a prime example of a machine that probably doesn’t get the love it deserves. Or at least, when it’s been transformed in such a fantastic manner. The owner of this 1992 Ford Escort GT has taken this car to another level. Yes sure, it’s still a front-wheel-drive economy car. But now it’s one with aggressive good looks and a boosted engine that looks cleanly displayed in the engine bay. And the whole package is for sale.
Here’s the full text from the listing:

$4500 or trade Thanks for looking
You’ll need to find a front bumper that will cover all that action in the nose. But once you do, you have something unexpectedly mean on your hands. Hopefully, the torque steer doesn’t rip your wrists apart on the way to time attack or autocross glory.

That’s fantastic, love those wheels.
Wagon wheels need get old. They’re timeless classics that are always appropriate, whatever the build.
I owned a 93 Escort LX. It was a slightly above average economy car. The GT was better, no doubt, but I’m not sure a lot more tire and power is going to make it even better. It’s intriguing, but I’m guessing the whole is less impressive than the sum of the parts would suggest.
Don’t a ton of great sport compacts and hot hatches start life as slightly above average economy cars though? While I’m not suggesting the Escort GT is a forgotten great, it at least is a decent base to start with. If nothing else, getting rid of the 1.9 lump for something revvier is a good start. I had a plain ’93 like yours, and enjoyed it plenty.
Plus, that kind of huge greenhouse looks really appealing these days.
But the Escort GTs of this generation didn’t have the 1.9l. They were powered by Mazda’s 1.8l B series DOHC fours, as found in Miatas and 323s.
Sorry, that was my point, that the upgrade from the sensible Ford lump to the Mazda 1.8 was already a good start.
Gt has a mazda BP 1.8
I’d have liked that engine in our 95 Escort LX. It would have made school runs so much more interesting 🙂
They sold a version here with the dohc BP turbo and AWD as well as a fwd version, I can’t remember the power levels that they used to get out of them (aftermarket, they were 157hp stock). Never see them now.
“no issues”
Sorry, hard to believe that when it’s missing a bumper.
Looks pretty cool though, and certainly nostalgic.
