This car is one of only six McLaren F1 examples built to what’s called LM-spec. The LM stands for Le Mans, and these cars serve to honor mighty F1 GTR race cars. Of those six, just two were made legal for road duty. The other four are track-only beasts locked away in tidy cages. And of the two, this one here is coming up for sale.

Click play on the video above and you’ll get to see it driven around a bit. Hear the noise from the 6.1-liter V12 engine and all of its 680 horsepower. Friend of Hooniverse Cameron Thuman and his team captured this footage of the car ahead of its date with the auction block.
RM Sotheby’s will see this British supercar cross its block during Monterey Car Week. How much will someone spend to put their name on the title? Early bets are somewhere north of $20 million.
We don’t have that kind of cash. But we can still enjoy the car, albeit in video form, thanks to Cameron and his team.
Natural aspiration is a beautiful thing.
I’ve got a copy of the Driving Ambition book, about as close as I will get – looking at prices on Amazon I should have bought more than one! Mind you it was expensive enough for me at the time
Cool car indeed, although the sound of the gas spring actuated doors could use more “tech”, they sound like a hatchback’s hatch back.
I don’t understand why there is such a rather intrusive background music, though.
It’s funny you would mention that, because I really like the sound of those doors opening. Perhaps it’s just nostalgia, because– as you suggest– that was the sound of the hatch opening on my mom’s AMC wagon.
Good that I don’t have 20 mill, I would have been an unsatisfied and ignorant buyer…
The audio is ruined by the music
Looking at the auction listing, they say it has to be sold outside California due to emissions regulations – surely you could own a car and not register it for the road? I suppose it is just RM covering their backside by being ultra conservative on the issue.
To conclude, according to the Bloomberg article linked in the Type64 article, it sold for 19mil. I hope the buyer likes the sound of the doors!
