When TAG McLaren sought a test bed for the mechanical systems of what was destined to become the legendary F1 they turned to another small cottage car maker, Noble Motorsport Ltd. for help. Noble sold McLaren the last two Ultima Mk3s out the factory door, one of which – #12 – was used for brake and gearbox testing, and was powered by a Chevy V8. The other – #13 – received the BMW-based McLaren V12 and was used for cooling and exhaust testing.
These cars were nicknamed by the developers Albert and Edward, and they even received their own badges. Seeing Edward above – before it was intentionally crushed by McLaren – provides an intimate look into the gestation of one of the world’s greatest super cars. It also provides one of the most viscerally exciting shots of a motionless car I’ve ever encountered.
