Last Call: This Cat is All Tail Edition

Jaguar XJ13Many, Enzo Ferrari included, considered the Jaguar XKE to be the most beautiful car in the world. I say that the mid-engine 12-cylinder XJ13 tops the E-Type in sensual stimulation both visual and, if you’ve ever heard one at full chat, on an aural level too. What do you think, E or 13?
Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day.  It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

They are both beautiful and I would love to own either. That said, I would take the XJ13. Jaguar’s styling has always been on point (except for maybe the s type…)

    I dislike binary decisions…
Side note: I was introduced to the D-type as a kid of about 8, when I found an old photo of my wayward aunt behind the wheel of one. I wish I knew the back story.

As a compromise, I can offer you the E13, which is only 15 miles away from Whitley, Coventry.

Wiki says: “Although the United Kingdom government participates fully in the E-road network, E-routes are not signposted within the United Kingdom.”
That was new to me, too, but makes kind of sense on an island. In continental Europe, where the tarmac track is actually crossing borders, the Enn designation is a thing, and in Norway it substitutes the old designations even for intra-national dead ends, afaik.

Not even close. The E doesn’t even crack my top ten of most beautiful, and doesn’t crack my top fifty of most wanted.
The XJ13 is near the top of both lists.

Thanks to the newly passed Low-Volume Motor Vehicles Replica Act, the DMC12 Delorean is supposed to be made again … Why not this XJ13 one ( the D type racer, and the XkSS ) Install maybe a newly made Toyota MR2 rear drivetrain ( or alternative ) so us lowrent hoons could afford one. Even though my ratty Jeepsters would probably give them the cooties parked in the garage.

would you call $29,000 (instructions not included?!?!?) affordable?

The E-type is rather pretty, but I love the XJ13. That said, I was pretty disappointed, if not exactly shocked, when I once got the chance to sit in an E-type and discovered that, er…I don’t really fit. Not enough joints in my legs, and a little too much length in the neck and noggin. I could get in, but I doubt if I’d be able to drive it (anyway, not smoothly/confidently).
Given that, and the XJ13’s reputation for being none too spacious (big surprise), maybe it’s just as well that it’s probably too rare a bird for me to ever get a chance to sit in/drive one — if it were too tight a fit for me to even be able to hobble it around the parking lot or something, that disappointment would be crushing.

Side note: Jaguar certainly seems to have a way with mid-engined V12 racecars and supercars where looks are concerned. Or anyway, mid-engined supercars that were supposed to get a V12…

In some of the detailing the XJ220 paid homage to the XJ1,Keith Helfet and Jim Randle made sure of it.
And yes the 200mm (8 inch) longer prototype/show car had a 48Valve V12 and AWD. It’s still at the Heritage Centre, it’s V12 visible under the glass rear window.

    SS100, XK150 coupe, C-Type, D-Type, XJ13 > E-Type. Heresy, maybe, but it’s so cartoonish and narrow.

Internet search results show “XJ13” is a strain of marijuana…
Patients can expect XJ13 to give them a nice body buzz… coupled with a clear-head.
Perhaps the Jag has the same effect?
Anyway, the E-Type was gorgeous, and more gorgeous for appearing where and when it did: in England, when only Enzo Ferrari’s wet dreams looked like that.
The XJ13 is a better looking car, to me. Maybe it’s novelty (been looking at E-Types all my life) or maybe it’s refinement over time. But is it better looking than everything in its class? Is it outstandingly good looking? I’d say yes, and add that it is unmistakably a Jaguar. Jaguar has been guilty of making cookie cutter high-end market cars, but this one recalls the E-type (and D-type) quite well.
Sadly, you’re not going to drive an XJ13 away from the dealership for a mere two month’s entry level wages, which really added to the appeal of the E-Type.

Everyone seems to like the XK180 as well.
Ford stole the grille for the Taurus.
And the E-Type was theoretically a road going D-type without the fin.

The XJ13 is an extraordinary, total triumph of organic beauty. It could be an animal, king of the four wheels. The E type is all that watered down to a roadgoing, more sellable vehicle – it’s an uneven fight.

on beauty alone, I’d take the e-type. it’s just very very pretty, narrow track and all (I usially don’t like that).
the xj13 is more agressive, also beautiful, but kind of different… the e is just so pretty, and as most things that pretty, I just can’t afford it.

Not really fair comparing a production car to a racing prototype with twice as many cylinders. The XJ13 looks fantastic in the way the Ferrari P4 looked fantastic, but it may have the Ferrari beat. I’m not big on the XJ220 someone mentioned below, even in 12-cyl showcar form. The XKE in its original form was truly a beautiful car and a great performer that belongs near the top of any list of the worlds best or most beautiful cars (production, prototype, or design study).
