Last Call: The refreshed Bentley Bentayga looks much better

By Colby Buchanan Jul 1, 2020

I think it’s kind of ironic that the new Bentayga is revealed so shortly after my last call about the design looking dated. It looked a little disconnected from the rest of the fleet but this brings it back in line. The backside is what really does it for me. The slimmer lights and concave bits modernize it well along with the headlights that are a little more discrete. It also has a few new lines that make the car sharper all around. This was my issue with Benletys for a while; they were round and it made them look old in an era of geometric influence.

The interior wasn’t an issue before in my opinion so I don’t think much needed to be changed anyways on that front. Overall, the changes weren’t dramatic but they didn’t need to be. This is exactly what I think the car needed. I feel like it is back to being more of a contender in the luxury SUV category from an aesthetic perspective.

Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day. It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

  1. When the Chrysler 300C came out, everyone thought of the styling as Bentley-on-a-budget. I like the refreshed looks of the Bentayga, but it reminds me of a Chrysler, if that Chrysler was a bride with a high-dollar hair and makeup session for her wedding pictures.

  2. When will high profile tires make a comeback? Please let it be soon!
I think large diameter rims are the most jarring thing to see on a car, or whatever that Bentley is. There’s no getting around the fact that a rim is just a big fat disk with a radial pattern in it, and they never blend well with the long horizontal lines of a chassis. Those meat grinders on the Bentayga are way too busy on already lavishly embellished bodywork.
Better to diminish the rims in a big fat black tire. Fat tires say, “I have a comfortable ride and can roll over any obstacle like a true utility vehicle.” Being dark and pavement colored they don’t distract from the car, but blend it into the ground.
I’ll stop before I convince myself that fender skirts and color-keyed hub caps need to make a comeback (but I wouldn’t have a heart attack if they did!)

    1. I agree on the profile thing, but the last drop to give you my +1 was the “car, or whatever that is”. Thank you!

      1. I just saw a car today that had a proper sidewall to rim diameter proportion and thought, “See? That’s a good looking car!” Then I relaized it was a Prius and felt kinda dirty.

  3. It isn’t a very harmonic look to my eyes; front, side and rear could be three different cars. I definitely agree on it needing luxury car tires though, especially sitting out on rocks in a quasi-off-road-setting.

This is something from the entirely opposite end of the vehicular spectrum, and it’s way cooler:

    1. Moped Mad Max (yeah, I know, actually scooters, but doesn’t have the same ring)

  5. The Bentayga looks better in the same way the movie adaptation of Cats was improved by having the buttholes digitally removed in post.

  6. Much better doesn’t mean pretty. Those taillights are heinous. And as Sjalabais mentions, it’s a frankenstein collection of themes depending on the viewing angle.
