Last Call- Sticky Slicky Edition

Tire

There are three factors that allow a modern Formula One car to out corner almost anything else on the planet: Aerodynamic downforce created by its various curves and wings, tires softer than a marshmallow, and a driver with cojones the size of Manhattan.  The first and last elements typically suffer little for their roles, but those tires, well they live such amazingly short lives.

    1. Wouldn't those be a Micheline or Bridgestone from the grooved era, not a full slick Pirelli? 'cause if that's a full-on slick, that's a bizarre pickup pattern!

    2. Muthalovin will correct you and state they're Bridgestones on an NSX. I mean, you can clearly see the prancing dragon emblem!

  1. I might have a new wallpaper for my computer. Considering how pictures of destroyed supercars and classics tend to make us wince in pain, I guess you could say this is one of the few instances in the automotive world where there is beauty in destruction.

  2. Those are really torched. Must have come off Massa's car. Alonso's wouldnt look like that. Or maybe a test driver.

  3. Could this be from picking up marbles on the way back to the puts after a race, rather than from the tires themselves being shot?

    1. I thought the same thing- I bet there's a pound of clag on each tire. Helps pass the post race weigh-in.

    2. Exactly correct. Watch every driver on the track after the race, driving through the marbles and dirt to pick up any ounces they can.
I've always wondered why the FIA doesn't simply brush off the debris before weigh-in. Everyone knows it's a farce.

        1. The little bits of rubber the fly off the tires. They say driving over them all is like driving on marbles – no grip.

          1. My guess is it's a NASCAR term, since that's what I was raised on. Clag, debris, marbles, whatever you want to call it.

          2. I've heard it in the context of rally as well. That certain vicious kind of gravel.
