Last Call- Stance in Your Pants Edition

Stanced2000GT

With auction sale prices reaching $1.2 million, which makes it the most expensive Asian car ever sold, it’s only a matter of time before somebody slams a Toyota 2000GT, I mean it’s gonna’ happen, right? Fortunately, this one’s only a model, so put down your pitchforks. You can get the low-down, and some more pics here.

Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day. It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

My take on stance, take it or leave it. The guys with stanced/lowered/slammed cars do not rag on people who build functional cars. Hell, half of them also have track or sporty cars as well. I think the function > form crowd just needs to lay off them a bit and realize that stanced cars are just a fashion statement that you can also drive. There's nothing wrong with that.
I would never condone doing ANYTHING to an actual 2000GT.

I just don't get why people want to appear as though their suspension is broken.

And that's ok! They're working on their cars and saving old rust buckets that we can't (even if they might slowly grate into the ground). Personally I enjoy the look, done well and also enjoy seeing people doing crazy fitments that I would never do myself. It just adds variety to the automotive world.

There are some cars and trends from the stance movement that I can appreciate. I like nicely flared cars with reasonable wheel fitments on real suspension. Not a big fan of bagged cars

I definitely prefer static cars over bagged, although bags make sense from a usability standpoint. Living with North Jersey winters would make me avoid bags as you get inflation problems when they're cold. You can always just crank up the coilovers for a few months.

Any excuse to post my current favorite static car.

I'm curious as to why you would prefer a static drop to a bagged setup. Like ToLive mentions, bags are more usable, since you can adjust on the fly and don't get hung up on a speed bump or steep driveway. The look when slammed is the same. The ride is better, and some Air Ride setups have actually been proven to handle well. Pretty much everything, other than possible inflation problems, (which I have never heard of before, so I can't support or refute it) is superior to a static drop IMO.

I like it. I don't get the whole stance thing, but I really enjoy seeing them. If someone did this to their 2000GT I would high five them until their hand fell off. There are plenty of these left, why not just go nuts with one and see what happens.

If by plenty of them left you mean hardly any of them left then yes, you're spot on there.

It's not like it's the last one left. There are a bunch around that going to stay well preserved and be as safe as they can get. Why not have a little fun?

      2. dead_elvis Avatar

If by high five them you mean backhand them until your hand falls off, then yes, you're spot on there.

The only aspect I actually hate about the whole craze is tire stretch. It has gotten to the point of extremes, and everyone is trying to outdo one another. It's dangerous, and it looks stupid. In my opinion, if the wheel sticks out so far that you need to stretch the tire to make it fit under the fender, your offset is way too low, and it's not a good fit.
      <img src="http://i.imgur.com/Rxgox8l.jpg" width="500">
I understand it started as a drift thing, since it artificially made the sidewalls stiffer, and thus more responsive control. But now it is also a style thing, and a competition in the same way fitting bigger wheels seems to be…

A lot of it too was from Germany. By the TUV regulation, the tread face of the tire had to be within the line of the fender lip, but it didn't say anything about the wheel itself. So to get the dish look and have an attractive lip to the wheel, but still be able to have the tread face within the wheel well line, they started stretching the tires, so you couls have a 3 inch lip and still have the tread face under the arch.

Interesting. I hadn't heard that aspect of it before. I like how a law aimed at making things safer resulted in people making their cars less safe…

High pressure I'd imagine, but they can still pop off if the stretch is extreme like the one above. A dude I know had something like 9" wide wheels on his Seat Ibiza, and one of the tires popped off.

I used to see this when I was growing up, on all the lowriders around the neighborhood. it was on wire wheels and whitewalls tho.. didnt really like it then, or now. had to install the whiskers on the front to prevent wheel damage from the curbs when parking.

<pedant>When someone refers to a vehicle's stance, they are referring to its overall proportions of front and rear ride height, how its wheels look under the fenders, and the general rake of the vehicle at rest. Stance <> extreme lowering. </pedant>

I hate the term too, but it's so widespread that I've learned to live with it.

I wish they would just build some more of those. As "off-road" vehicles. I bet they could make a profit at less than $500k.

It would have been nice if Toyota had designed the Lexus LFA as an homage to the 2000GT. The 2000GT was a small car (remember the "Bond Model" open top version?) and would still have been lovely in a scaled-up size.

Could be worse… could have those 30" conestoga-wagon wheels.
Tangent: is it just me, or is the standard space-saving shop-manual text of "reassembly is the reverse of disassembly" sometimes hilarious? I've been on vacation this week, so naturally I've spent the last few days sweating beneath my old '96 Ford Thunderbird, starting with new U-joints since one cup at the transmission output end was 100% needle-bearing free. Reassembly took 1/3rd the time of disassembly, since I was no longer fighting rusty fasteners (or disintegrated the rusty ones, in the case of the exhaust pipe U-bolt). All that's left is one brace that goes underneath between the passenger footwells, where I twisted off one of the 4 bolts that hold it to the body and leaving the remainder of the bolt in the body's weldnut… I think we'll try welding a nut onto the bolt tomorrow.

Toyota factory manuals generally include all the steps of installation, as well as disassembly.

Stance? I'm old. Stance looks like yer about to cut a tire on the fender with tires that are too small for the wheels.

The dealer I bought my GMC from deals only in used fleet vehicles. I was asking him about Ford Rangers and he mentioned he always changed them over to Crown Vic rims. Why? "Gives 'em a nicer stance." he sez, tongue somewhat in cheek. Jury's still out on that, but I like anything that's vaguely pepper pot-ish so it's got my vote for aesthetic value.

I think that looks absolutely stunning. Watanabes are THE perfect wheel for a 2000GT, and I love the in the weeds look of the car. I just wish someone would make a nice fiberglass replica body of the 2000GT so awesome things like this could get built in real life without hacking up an irreplacable original. I wan to do this to a bunch of cars. For instance, I think a Ferrari California (the original one) would look amazing done up as a track car with some ZG style flares slammed over some 17×10 Watanabes with some 305s on all 4 corners. I'd never in a million years do that to an original, but I'd do it in a heartbeat to a replica.

I firmly disagree with you on the look of "stance", but that's why we each own our own cars.
I fully appreciate your desire to do this, but only to a replica, not an original, if only to show up at the ___ Car Club of America with it and watch all the hearts start palpitating!

I suspect there might be pitchforks and flamings sticks involved too.. 😉
Anyway I like this, the original is already very low so this would be maybe a 5-7cm drop in real life and totally reversible. But I still wouldn't do it to my 2000GT if I had the means to buy one.
