Last Call: Here's To The Factory Workers Edition

Tomorrow is Independence Day here in the U.S. and while we often take a moment on that day to -justifiably – celebrate those who made our great nation possible, we sometimes don’t give a fair shake to those who built the country into an industrial powerhouse during the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries. Oh sure we have labor day, but think about all the people who worked to support the war effort during all our major conflicts, and the sacrifices they made. Those were people like the iconic Rosie the Riveter, embodied in the artwork by Greg Hildebrandt on this metal sign, and we wouldn’t be here today – or more importantly tomorrow – without them.
Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day. It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

That’s an outstanding wrenching deal! If the zero rust claim checks out, one of the best priced ES’s you can get…

      1. wunno sev Avatar
        wunno sev

yep, small fraction of the prices asked for other ESs. but i’m thinking something must be pretty wrong with it if it’s been around a month plus at that price with no takers.
still, an unrusty shell? a reasonably together-looking interior? given that volvo used that running gear in 99999999999999 cars, i can’t imagine it would be too difficult or expensive to get it up and running again.

Looks like it’s coming down in price, vs when Rob posted it over at [Redacted].
And btw, Graverobber & everyone else, it’s an 1800ES. The “P” prefix only applied to the first couple of years of manufacture, before they realized that the Jensen quality control was sub-drunken-Sven level, and production was switched to Gothenburg. I try to rein in my pedantic qualities, but for some reason, the P/non-P1800 distinction sets off my pedant-o-meter like almost nothing else. (Maybe because my dream 1800ES with T5 swap is likely unobtainable sacrilege?)
      TL;DR: P1800, 1800S, 1800E, 1800ES. There is no P1800(X) of any sort.

That’s a really good looking ride, seems complete and unmolested, and at 112K, the motor is just broken in. Just to not have to do any rust repair, I would even live the autotragic trans. Nice find!

Is Bubba Watson missing the point?
    http://www.chron.com/news/article/Bubba-Watson-to-remove-Confederate-flag-from-6365243.php
He’s vowed to paint over the Confederate flag on top of his authentic “General Lee” from The Dukes Of Hazzard, calling it “the right gesture”. Except, the car is still called the General Lee and that’s just as much a symbol of the racist insurrection as the flag is, so why not change it’s name to U.S. Grant while you’re at it?
For my two cents, this is much akin to removing the n-word from the works of Mark Twain. Ineffectual revisionism. I support removing the flag from state capitols, and I have never understood why anyone would display it, but this seems wrong headed.

The focus needs to be on the attitude not the representation.
It’s his car, he can do what he wants.
I do believe there is a Grant car out there with the American Flag.

I guess, as a black man, and history nut; I never understood the hoopla over the confederate flag with regard to racism. The Civil War was not fought over slavery. It was over taxes and succession (in that order). Freeing the slaves was a political expedience for those too simple minded to understand what was at stake. There were in fact 4 states that never succeeded from the union and had slaves through the entire war: Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri.
That flag no more ‘stands for racism’ than the current Stars and Stripes stands for US Imperialism – but we know how that is debated.
It’s just an object. What one attributes to it is purely up to the individual.

        wunno sev

just as a point of information here, the confederate flag went up over the South Carolina capitol in ’62.
        not 1862. 1962.
in fact, that’s when the battle flag began to make its reappearance, after being completely unheard of for a century. it’s hard to not see that as being directly linked to the debate over segregation.

If you like burly inline 4s, you’ll dig it. I’ve got a ’99 ZRX1100, and while it’s not a particularly sophisticated machine, or as nimble as more hard-edged sportbikes, it’s a hell of good, kinda-modern incarnation of the UJM. Mine’s approaching 50K miles & I’ve been in 38 of 50 US states on it at this point.
      It’s got a pretty obsessive discussion board/support group: http://www.zrxoa.org.

    Interesting…
(ANSA) – Turin, July 3 – Ferrari President and Fiat Chrysler (FCA) CEO Sergio Marchionne said Friday Ferrari’s HQ would “probably” be moved to the Netherlands. He added that he expected “not less than 10 billion euros from the upcoming listing” of the Italian sportcar maker and F1 glamour team.
Marchionne gained headlines in 2014 when he created a Dutch holding company with a tax domicile in the UK.

If future Ferraris spit flowers rather than flames in future crises, this can only be good.
(And here I thought consumer pressure was making financial shenanigans like this much less likely)

Hehe, true. With companies like Starbucks and Apple under huge pressure not to construct legalities that avoid tax payments, which is undermining the way society works and basically institutionalises a d*ck approach to everyone around them, it would be awfully telling if a true 1%ers company went the other way. Governments and NGOs all around the world are trying to fix loopholes like this, seemingly to no avail when confronted with armies of lawyers.

Someone bought my wrecked V50 and fixed it up. Too bad the Volvo badging is in two different font sizes and there should be a T5 badge instead of a 2.4i badge. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/cto/5106878289.html

I started tearing off the rotten panels and some joists from the garage/tool shack. You car people know what I mean with “while you are in there”… It takes some stomach to decide to stop at some point:
If you do a regular maintenance on a car (empty oil, remove air filter and spark plugs) it’s easy to unhook the battery and remove the injectors, and once the fuel system is without pressure one can change the fuel filter, and while under the car with the oil out, do the oil pan seal, and once the pan is off take a close look at those rod bearings…
I have a ton of brittle planks now.
