Hooniverse Asks- What's the Coolest Japanese Sports Coupe of the '80s/'90s?

It’s pretty indisputable that the ’80s and ’90s were the golden age of Japanese sport coupes. At no time before or since have so many companies foisted so many models on the buying public, who of course gobbled them up like they were well drinks during happy hour.

The small sport coupe – typically four cylinder-powered, or on occasion sporting a v6 – were the strong suit of the Japanese auto makers, and every single company in the Land of the Rising Sun had at least one in their stable. Most had two or three, and they were – for the most part –  based on standard family cars like the Corolla and Stanza, just like earlier British sports cars shared major mechanicals with their sedan siblings. In the case of the Japanese cars however, they were usually as reliable as the sunrise.

Thinking back on all those coupes – FWD, RWD, hatches and notches – it’s almost a challenge to catalog them all, much less pick a favorite. And yet that’s exactly what I want you to do today. What do you think was the highpoint of the ’80s and ’90s Japanese sport coupe segment? More to the point, which one of those cars was, in your opinion, the coolest?
