Hooniverse Asks: What's a good replacement for an FJ Cruiser?

When Toyota introduced the 2007 FJ Cruiser it immediately created a cult following. It looked different, a retro design pulled off well. It was built on a fourth generation 4Runner frame, known for its capability and strength. Add to it the element of Toyota reliability and it’s no wonder that Toyota sold a ton of them. Out of production for over a year now, ridiculously high prices of used ones further reinforce the love that this vehicle has from its owners.
A friend messaged me the other asking what is a good replacement vehicle for his 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser. I asked him what is wrong with his FJ? Does he need space? More towing ability? More functionality?

Nope. None of those. He actually loves his FJ. For him it was love at first sight – he traded-in his GT-R for it! The problem is that it’s his daily driver and it is now ten years old and has 200,000 miles on the odometer. He is simply looking for something similarly different and innovative. Is there such thing?

“…ten years old and has 200,000 miles on the odometer.”
And? Does he really think he needs a new ride because it’s got 200k, or is he just itching to try something new? If he loves the FJ so much, he can find a low-mileage 2014 (final year) and keep the party going. Or, he can spend a couple of grand freshening all of the chassis bits that have probably gotten tired by 200k (moreso if he’s taken it off-roading much).
My understanding is that Toyota pickups never die, they just get more seasoned.
Or rust out, depending on the model year and climate.

So you’re expecting only valid answers? From what I’ve read, those who daily these out of free will in Europe end up frustrated and/or hospitalized, so if all he needs is a re-appreciation of his Toyota…

    TRD Pro 4Runner!

I am hoping the new Bronco will be it, but that hope is mighty low.

Hard to say without knowing what he needs from a vehicle. Perhaps a Jag F-Pace? F-Type?? Jeep Wrangler pickup if he can wait? Alfa Giulia if he likes living dangerously?
    How about a M-B GLA45?

I’m with those saying if he loves it, keep it. On the other hand, if he’s looking for a change he’s in a real good spot. FJ prices are insane. His 2007 with 200K is worth $11,500 on trade, over $14K retail, according to nadaguides.com.

Hmm. If he traded a GT-R he’s 1. not terribly short on cash and 2. not in dire need of off-road capability.
New, different, innovative – how about the design of the decade*, combined with a hybrid powertrain developed for (very sophisticated) fun more so than eco-cred? LC500h:

Why are FJs and Wranglers so popular among lesbians?

They’re butch. And for a lipstick lesbian, the soft-top Wrangler is still fabulous enough to show yourself off as you cruise the neighborhood.
