Craigslist Find – 1968 Mercury M-100 (Keep pretending it's Thursday)

If I had money, tell you what I’d do . . .

Raise your hand if you’ve ever seen an M-1 or M-100 in person. This is Hooniverse, so there should be a few. Anyone?

For sale just 30 miles or so north of here is a rare truck, relatively speaking. Built from 1946 to 1968, the M-Series pickups were sold only in Canada at Lincoln-Mercury-Meteor dealerships, and were apparently a fairly common alternative to Ford’s F-Series. A few of them have made the border crossing over the years, and I occasionally see them in the Seattle area. As you can see, there is little separating the M from the F except for some (very cool) badges on the hood and a tailgate with MERCURY stamped on the back, instead of F O R D. This particular truck is interesting because not only is it a Mercury, but it is a ’68 model, which was the final year that Mercury sold these trucks. Let’s take a closer look.

From the seller:

I have a 1968 M100. It is authentic, not a make over. 1968 was the last year Mercury pickups were made. It runs and drives well. I’m asking $4,500 obo. I am willing to work out a trade for sawmill, log loader, skidder, firewood processor, forklift….

Note the interesting placement of the side markers, which became mandatory around this time. Again, there’s not much to choose between a comparable F-100 and this, but how cool would it be to say you drive a Mercury pickup?

The interior is, well, green, just like the outside. You get a seat blanket, fancy armrests, and that’s about it. Frankly, I love it. I don’t know why, but I like the dash-mounted ignition on the left side. It just seems to make more sense, especially with a manual transmission.

Again, very, very green. I really like the way the MERCURY stamping stands out from the tailgate. That little bit of surface rust really makes a difference. Also, the step bumper appears to be a later addition, but I could be wrong on that. I would love to own this truck, if I didn’t already have a perfectly good F-150 sitting in the driveway. Would you drive this green machine?

I go to a big Ford show in California every year and there are always at least a couple of Mercury trucks. Last year there was even a Mercury Econoline.

My dad had one exactly like this. Think it might even have been the same colour.
You can really feel the iron and steel in these old machines.

*raises hand* I saw a 1956 Mercury pickup a long time ago. I had never heard of them before that.

I'd buy that with a cord of wood in the back! Really a nice truck, it would be a lot of fun to answer the inevitable Mercury truck questions!

In 1968 I bought a new 68 Mercury Explorer pickup. The only difference with the Explorer was a tool box built into the drivers side of the box. That colour was called Yukatan Gold, not green. I only kept it for two years and don't know what became of it. It was my first pickup truck and it would be fun to have it back. Mine was the same as the one in the picture complete with the junior west coast mirrors. I did not have the marker lights on the top of the cab, if these were added later, it could be my old truck.

Just for interest info, I have a 1968 Mercury 250 2 wheel drive regular cab pick up. Running gear is a 4 speed with the 390 cubic inch motor. I am planning on restoring this unit but things could change my mind. It is just north of the Sumas Washington border. Any questions that may want to be asked I can be reached at sc11shelby@telus.net and the name is Jay

Is it the camper special? on the passenger side box, is there a cubby in front of the back wheel? There is no picture of passenger side

The bedside toolbox was not a part of the Camper Special package. In fact, it was a regularly-available option on all F100/250 LWB trucks.
