If I had money, tell you what I’d do . . .
Raise your hand if you’ve ever seen an M-1 or M-100 in person. This is Hooniverse, so there should be a few. Anyone?
For sale just 30 miles or so north of here is a rare truck, relatively speaking. Built from 1946 to 1968, the M-Series pickups were sold only in Canada at Lincoln-Mercury-Meteor dealerships, and were apparently a fairly common alternative to Ford’s F-Series. A few of them have made the border crossing over the years, and I occasionally see them in the Seattle area. As you can see, there is little separating the M from the F except for some (very cool) badges on the hood and a tailgate with MERCURY stamped on the back, instead of F O R D. This particular truck is interesting because not only is it a Mercury, but it is a ’68 model, which was the final year that Mercury sold these trucks. Let’s take a closer look.
From the seller:
I have a 1968 M100. It is authentic, not a make over. 1968 was the last year Mercury pickups were made. It runs and drives well. I’m asking $4,500 obo. I am willing to work out a trade for sawmill, log loader, skidder, firewood processor, forklift….
Note the interesting placement of the side markers, which became mandatory around this time. Again, there’s not much to choose between a comparable F-100 and this, but how cool would it be to say you drive a Mercury pickup?
The interior is, well, green, just like the outside. You get a seat blanket, fancy armrests, and that’s about it. Frankly, I love it. I don’t know why, but I like the dash-mounted ignition on the left side. It just seems to make more sense, especially with a manual transmission.
Again, very, very green. I really like the way the MERCURY stamping stands out from the tailgate. That little bit of surface rust really makes a difference. Also, the step bumper appears to be a later addition, but I could be wrong on that. I would love to own this truck, if I didn’t already have a perfectly good F-150 sitting in the driveway. Would you drive this green machine?
