Welcome to Craigslist Crapshoot, our weekly search for the most bizarre, awesome, and/or terrible vehicles that the online classifieds has to offer.
What’s your favorite backyard firework? I happen to like the pinwheels myself. We didn’t just celebrate America’s Independence Day with a lot of colorful pyrotechnics here on Monday. No, we got an early start last week by looking for the most American car or truck for sale we could find. We’ll see the star spangled winner in a sec. First however, this week’s quest
Now that the 4th is past, we’re in that period of summer doldrums waiting for the next big holiday which won’t come until all the way in September. That’s a long wait for a road trip so let’s look right now for something the family might use to get out on that road. Thats right, let’s find us some performance wagons and let’s make sure they come in at under $15,000 since we’re obviously on a family budget.
As always, we want your finds to go down in infamy and not in the site’s spam filter. Since we’ve changed commenting systems, you may need to update your commenter account. Make sure you have a Disqus account – they’re free and easy to get – and then comment away.
Have you ever noticed that there is such a thing as too much pie? Yeah, I didn’t think so either, but there you go. In the same fashion it seems, when it comes to cars, there is such a thing as too much America.
Piling on the patriotism, we saw an awesome but wildly expensive AMC SC/Scrambler offered up by GTXcellent, and a Bicentennial Jeep found by Alff that featured both an SBC and some Revolutionary artwork on the spare carrier. mrh1965 came up with a flag-waving chopper, while Harry Callahan noted that it doesn’t get much more American than a Model T.
Perhaps the most American in both presentation and—as a representation that we just don’t make things much here anymore—in execution was the patriotically painted and faux blower wearing TransAm located by Spridget. Nothing says modern America quite like something done half-assed!
Thanks to you all for playing, and now let’s haul ass!
If you can block out the creeping sensation of impending financial ruin, this is pretty much the perfect wagon. Volvo V70R, manual, gunmetal over orange leather…

We had one of these. Then a part in the accelerator pedal started experiencing intermittent failures. The replacement was about $2k (installed) and the car had a book value of about $4k. We sold it fast and never looked back.
That’s the thing with these cars. They were at no point intended to make economic sense (not even “save buying a sports car and just use the wagon”), and that concept gets worse over time. It’s a shame, really, because I can only imagine the fun they plow into everyday driving.
This might not be the kind of “performance” you were looking for, but it’s a cool, sorta-rare wagon at an incredibly low price.
So, it’s probably a pile, but hey, at $600, why not?

Volvo and a V8? Sounds good to me.

I think the springs are broken.
What springs?
This seems to be a 1:1 scale plastic kit of a Dodge Magnum. Some assembly required. Many exclamation points provided gratis!!!!! http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/cto/5634604356.html

What’s it with Magnum wagons and stickers behind the C-pillar? The Swedish one I found is just the same.
Dunno…even the cops do it! http://www.coastalsign.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/coastal-sign-lbtpd-dodge-magnum-vehicle-graphics-04.jpg
Let it be known that the Crapshoot is something I actively look forward to, it structures an activity that’s got to be done anyway. Today’s topic is perfect, but the nexus between performance and price basically disqualifies Scandinavia. Very little to find.
Here’s a Dodge Magnum SRT8 6.1L HEMI 2006 model for about 17k$. With the appropriate haggling, it’s realistic to get it within the 15k limit. The cheapness inside is offensive, but it’s a neat deal anyway. Swedish car:

Or what about a 1997 Mitsubishi Legnum 2,5 liter V6 Biturbo 4WD? Located in Berlin, Germany, for only 6200€/6900$, it looks cheap, too:

How about a 5.0 litre Benz? Well under $15k, although whether it still will be at the end of your road trip is perhaps an open question. It’s even AWD and you really can’t argue with rear-facing jump seats.

Alternatively, if you’re the precise opposite end of the introvert/extrovert scale, how about an extremely yellow Stagea? AWD, manual, needless to say turbo (the big FMIC wouldn’t give it away at all, no sir), and of course RHD for family fun at the drive-through.

Timely, as I’ve been cruising CL looking for wagons this week. For some reason, my 19 year old daughter did not jump at the chance to drive this…

Saabaru! A 9-2X Aero with 95,000 miles and just enough differences from its Subaru sibling to make life miserable when one of those parts breaks. Which it will.
http://images.craigslist.org/00e0e_3gbaZw9citD_600x450.jpg
$4500? For an Aero? Damn, even with the dents in the passenger side that’s a good de…automatic. Shit. I guess I won’t be calling on it.

1992 Olds Custom Cruiser. Didn’t these have the LT1?

L05 – 180hp/300tq.
So, low-revving, torquey, truck-spec.
Ah, it seems the LT1 came after the Olds was discontinued.
Nope, LT1 was in ’93, so there are some roaming the streets.
Here’s a Magnum R/T AWD. Kinda high miles though.

It might not be a manual, but it’s definitely brown, and it has a V8.

WRX STI. $6500. 200,000 miles. Any guesses on how beat on this thing is?

http://inlandempire.craigslist.org/cto/5666320016.html
Very. Very beat. But it has some nice upgrades and the price is right. For the right buyer this is a gamble worth taking (EJ25s are a pain to work on, but not all that expensive).
A ’70 Vista Cruiser! Caveats:
*don’t know the asking price
*performance may need to be purchased separately
*paint seems to be a tri-tone, red/white/rust

Oh man, I’ve wanted one of these forever and it’s only a couple hours away…
Yee Ha………………………………..
Equipped with “rally package” so I say it counts as performance.

This is so ridiculous, it wins my vote. Even the garage door is in on the joke.
Is your life too easy? Do you have too much time and money? Do you enjoy headaches?
If you answered “Yes” to all of the above questions, then a $4000 “lightly modified” 2003 Volkswagen Passat W8 4-Motion Wagon is just the car for you!

I’d gladly go bankrupt to have that in my driveway…
You’d gladly go bankrupt if you had that in your driveway.
Thanks for awarding me the win Robert! With this weeks submission, I present to you this 1975 Plymouth Volare, ready to go to the drag strip with its fat rear tires . . . . and Slant Six. AC also needs a recharge.

I’m sure you could get a pretty gnarly V8 Commodore wagon for $15k, they also can be found with 6-sp manuals and SS trim. Being LS motors, performance is but a tune away.
And here we go, claimed 1 of 88 built. The newer VE model baselines at about $17k for a V8 manual.
