Craigslist Crapshoot

The World’s Worst Car Is For Sale On Craigslist
Welcome to Craigslist Crapshoot, our weekly search for the most bizarre, awesome, and/or terrible vehicles that the online classifieds has to offer.
What’s your favorite backyard firework? I happen to like the pinwheels myself. We didn’t just celebrate America’s Independence Day with a lot of colorful pyrotechnics here on Monday. No, we got an early start last week by looking for the most American car or truck for sale we could find. We’ll see the star spangled winner in a sec. First however, this week’s quest
Now that the 4th is past, we’re in that period of summer doldrums waiting for the next big holiday which won’t come until all the way in September. That’s a long wait for a road trip so let’s look right now for something the family might use to get out on that road. Thats right, let’s find us some performance wagons and let’s make sure they come in at under $15,000 since we’re obviously on a family budget.
As always, we want your finds to go down in infamy and not in the site’s spam filter. Since we’ve changed commenting systems, you may need to update your commenter account. Make sure you have a Disqus account – they’re free and easy to get – and then comment away.

Got that? Good, Now, let’s see about that baseball, hotdogs, and apple pie.

Have you ever noticed that there is such a thing as too much pie? Yeah, I didn’t think so either, but there you go. In the same fashion it seems, when it comes to cars, there is such a thing as too much America.
Piling on the patriotism, we saw an awesome but wildly expensive AMC SC/Scrambler offered up by GTXcellent, and a Bicentennial Jeep found by Alff that featured both an SBC and some Revolutionary artwork on the spare carrier. mrh1965 came up with a flag-waving chopper, while Harry Callahan noted that it doesn’t get much more American than a Model T.
Perhaps the most American in both presentation and—as a representation that we just don’t make things much here anymore—in execution was the patriotically painted and faux blower wearing TransAm located by Spridget. Nothing says modern America quite like something done half-assed!
Thanks to you all for playing, and now let’s haul ass!

    1. We had one of these. Then a part in the accelerator pedal started experiencing intermittent failures. The replacement was about $2k (installed) and the car had a book value of about $4k. We sold it fast and never looked back.

      1. That’s the thing with these cars. They were at no point intended to make economic sense (not even “save buying a sports car and just use the wagon”), and that concept gets worse over time. It’s a shame, really, because I can only imagine the fun they plow into everyday driving.

    1. What’s it with Magnum wagons and stickers behind the C-pillar? The Swedish one I found is just the same.

  1. Let it be known that the Crapshoot is something I actively look forward to, it structures an activity that’s got to be done anyway. Today’s topic is perfect, but the nexus between performance and price basically disqualifies Scandinavia. Very little to find.
Here’s a Dodge Magnum SRT8 6.1L HEMI 2006 model for about 17k$. With the appropriate haggling, it’s realistic to get it within the 15k limit. The cheapness inside is offensive, but it’s a neat deal anyway. Swedish car:

Or what about a 1997 Mitsubishi Legnum 2,5 liter V6 Biturbo 4WD? Located in Berlin, Germany, for only 6200€/6900$, it looks cheap, too:

    1. Very. Very beat. But it has some nice upgrades and the price is right. For the right buyer this is a gamble worth taking (EJ25s are a pain to work on, but not all that expensive).

    1. Oh man, I’ve wanted one of these forever and it’s only a couple hours away…

  2. 460 hp Audi S4 Quattro for 8200 EUR. Tuning : Water/Ethanol injection, K04 Turbo from RS4 @1,5 bar pressure, RS4 Brakes front, Zimmermann Sport-brakes rear, 235/35ZR 19 91Y Summer tyres, 225/40R18 91 Y Winter tyres, Koni shocks. Ebay small-ads is maybe a bit more Crasigslist-like channel:

  3. I’m sure you could get a pretty gnarly V8 Commodore wagon for $15k, they also can be found with 6-sp manuals and SS trim. Being LS motors, performance is but a tune away.
