There are some crazy folks, like myself and Eric, who mark their calendars from June to June. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the reason for that. Held every June for literally decades, this race has grown to insane levels of both speed and competitive quality. There are four major manufacturers taking part in the top-tier LMP1 category, a massive 19-car LMP2 privateer category, and more GT cars than you can shake a stick at. If the previous two races of the WEC season are anything to go on, this Le Mans 24 will be one for the ages. Everywhere you look there will be on-track battles, passing, traffic, fuel strategies, tire strategies, and the regular scars of endurance racing. This is an old-world race being tackled by new-world technology. Listen along and we’ll let you know everything you need to know in order to follow the race with fervor.

1. If you haven’t seen them, you should immediately watch the Audi-produced dramatic documentaries called “Truth in 24”. They’re fantastic, just absolutely bonkers.

2. Here are some highlights of the 2014 race. I was there, it was fantastic. So much drama!

3. The most recent race in the WEC, the 6 hours of Spa, was absolutely frenetic. You can watch it here.

4. If you ever want to know why Audi’s Benoit Treluyer is awesome, just check out this quick video. That Pass around the outside of the Corvette GT traffic was ‘inspired’.

5. Hooniverse even had a nice walkaround look at the Nissan GT-R LM Nismo LMP1 when it made its public debut at the Chicago Auto Show.

An Audio Guide To The 24 Hours Of Le Mans
-
Finally a C&T episode without that annoying music in the background! The vague hi-hat beats don’t improve anything, and usually keep me from listening for longer than 30min, I hardly finish any episode. This one? In one session, despite of its length.
-
What’s wrong with the Gran Turismo 2 menu music?
-
I thought at first that it adds noise to the higher frequency, so my brain is busy filtering it out (while the encoder was busy filtering it in), but now I know the actual cause: I’m more a Forza 3 guy.
-
/begins editing this week’s episode
/turns gain to +25 on background music channel-
/rants about this in youtube-comment style
/doesn’t unsubscribe though -
/complains that there isn’t enough audience participation
/acts like a jerk when someone offers constructive criticism

I could use the race music instead. Just “Sex Type Thing” on repeat for eighty minutes a week.

1. It helps hide a lot of the ambient audio. Usually my dogs barking or Jason jerkin’ it.
2. It used to be louder, but I made Cam turn it down.
3. I’ll see what we can do…-
On 1. – It may hide ambient audio in the room, but not in my headphones, which basically serve as high pass filter… Dogs on a podcast is fine for me, I even know who Darla is. Jerkin it: this must be slang for “researching facts on the internet”?
2. and 3. Thanks, appreciated.
4. I didn’t want to turn this into an audio discussion, so let me send some compliments on how much overview you folks have: I struggle following the cars’ properties, but you even comment on drivers’ skills.-
Well, when you’re as obsessive as Eric is, it gets easier to follow everything. Late last year we started having daily conversations about sports cars and racing, I was a mostly passive fan with a decent memory. Eric has pushed me to follow things a bit more closely. Focus on things like fuel stints and tire changes.
Without trying to toot my own horn, I honestly think, with a little more practice (me on the technical stuff, and Eric on the public speaking stuff), we wouldn’t make a bad commentary team for radio or television. If anyone is looking for a new pair of guys to talk about race cars, we could probably be bought for relatively little…-
Yeah, I need to get better at talkin’.
-
Although about radio talk shows, one of my favorite short text authors, David Foster Wallace, has a great paragraph on “free talking” abilities, search for ‘ Try sitting alone in a room with a clock, turning on a tape recorder, and starting to speak into it.’

It’s not easy, but can be trained, I guess. -
Solid advice. I wish I had time (A) to do this and (B) to read more DFW. It took me two weeks to read a short story he wrote once.

Wait… Who’s Darla?
-
I may have the name slightly wrong, but that’s the dog one can hear occasionally barking right before Matt Farah says “Shut up Darla” (The Smoking Tire podcast).
