A quest to bring a 90's icon back to its sports bike glory

Image snagged from Jalopnik

When you love a specific point in time for your preferred mode of transportation, you find yourself hunting down ways to gain a piece of that time. For Peter Monshizadeh, that point in time appears to be when sport bikes were colorful, stylish, and well built during the early 1990’s. That’s why Peter decided to track down a unicorn of the era; a 1993 Honda CBR900RR.
Not only did Peter find the bike he was looking for, but he found one with less than 1,000 miles on its odometer.
After acquiring the bike, Peter quickly set to work restoring it to its original glory. That adventure is well chronicled over at Jalopnik. You can see exactly what Peter needed to do in order to restore his new bike, and he even breaks out the costs of his journey.
Go read it, then day dream about the projects currently in your life or the ones you hope to add in the near future.

I really like that site – so much good stuff there. It’s almost as if it were the product of some kind of manifesto of awesomeness.

Too clean, in fact, at least for daily duties. Solution? Buy another! https://jalopnik.com/i-bought-another-honda-cbr900rr-that-i-can-actually-rid-1819488126

I remember when the CBR 900 came out. The low weight of Suzuki’s GSX-Rs and the power of Kawasaki’s GPZ 900 combined with Honda build quality made it a huge seller all over the world.
I remember a group ride I went on and five out of the eleven other bikes were CBR 900s. My GSX750ESD struggled to keep up. I nearly bought one but then Kawasaki’s ZX11/ZXR1100 had come out in S2 form, and I looked at my physique and decided more power trumped low weight for me at least.( Also MOAR SPEED)
The great thing about the CBR is it’s light-feeling-ness allied with a great precision of operation. Even today a ‘new’ CBR 900 would be very desirable. Peter is a lucky man.
Oh and those 16″ front wheels, I changed my ESD750 to a 17″ front wheel from a GSX 400 Impulse purely due to tyre availability way back then, and because of the rate I used them at 2000km a week. I can’t believe that a good 16″ tyre is still available. More good luck!

I’ve been in both positions. Always change the exhaust on a motorcycle and keep the unmarked original safe for resale.
