I didn’t completely understand the unadulterated love plied upon the Porsche 911. I know that it’s a supposed to be a pure driving machine. I know that it’s a precise instrument for a skilled enthusiast. I know that I still didn’t fully “get it”.

Now it’s time for me to understand, and I’m not getting my Porsche 911 education by way of the latest and greatest that Stuttgart has to offer. Instead, we’re taking the harder route with a 1970 Porsche 911.

This harder route takes us to the always wonderful Angeles Crest Highway, and to a place where Porsche discovery can happen.

It turns out the harder route is actually the quickest way to make me understand why everyone loves the Porsche 911.

[Many thanks to John the owner for supplying us with the car, and also for snagging the oh-so-sweet drone shots.]

  1. I don’t “get it” either. I’m still convinced there are some KDF parts hiding in there. Especially the air cooled ones.

  2. I had a similar feeling for a long time but then I started to become friends with 911 enthusiasts and owners and eventually started to really see what it was all about. The looks grew on me first and then the sound and the low weight. Plus you can get incredible performance out of these cars but fly “below the radar” or at least below the radar compared to how it might be if you had something with comparable performance, like a contemporary Ferrari of similar age.

  3. That era: I get it, raw and unaltered experience etc. Current examples: I’d rather get a german über-sedan, which is as quick on the autobahn, and as oversized on curvy secondary roads.

  4. BTW, that is about the coolest 911 I’ve ever seen. From the scuffed bodywork and blackout trim to the stripped-down interior and bitsa-build heritage, you’ve probably already driven the most Hooniverse-worthy 911 out there.

    1. Exactly what I was thinking…
Next up I’m going to try and understand the world of the El Camino (seriously)

  5. Now go drive a more current example and see how visceral the experience is by comparison. It might still be enjoyable but I imagine it will be so in a much different way.

  6. Excellent choice of car for a 911 intro. I’ll be curious to hear what you think of a current era one.
    That car sounded awesome.

  7. When I was 22, i very nearly bought a 912 from the GM dealer I was working at. Wish I had and wonder what might have been.
