V.I.S.I.T. – 1966 Ford F-100 is Ready for Action

On Monday, I attended a huge car show in Everett, WA called Cruzin to Colby, hosted by the fine folks at Seattle Rod-Tiques. When I first heard about it last week, I thought it would be worth checking out, but likely a small event. Then I heard that registration for the car show was limited to the first 400 cars. HOw wrong I was. Believe me when I tell you there were more than 400 vehicles on display, and plenty of unregistered cars cruising around downtown, adding to the atmosphere. Despite the constant drizzle and big crowds, it was a lot of fun. Most of the owners were laidback, and everyone was having a good time.

Before I share those cars with you, though, I wanted to show you a truck I found parked nearby, quietly sitting there in its parking space. Check it out.

This is a 1966 Ford F-100. Those of you who have been around more than a few weeks know I love old trucks; the fourth-generation F-series pickups are probably my favorite, so you can see that this truck is right up my alley. It’s a beater, and its best days are probably behind it, but for right now, it’s still on the road, and still doing work for its owner.

As you can tell, this is likely the original paint. For a 47-year old truck, the body is in good shape. You can see the bumper hitch has seen some heavy use, and the bumper could probably stand replacing. I failed to get a good shot of the interior, but you can imagine it’s a little rough. However, with a floor-mounted shifter and a bench seat, this truck is epitome of cool, to me.

What do you think of this faithful old machine?

I had one of these. Same color even. Worst fifty bucks I've ever spent on a car. Pretty decent truck. Until the engine blew up.

Ah yes, "Decaying Corpse", one of the less-popular shades from Ford.

Back in the day Colby ave was the place to cruise, when they cracked down there it was Lake City way. The Loop in Renton and Golden Gardens were also popular in their own day. The loop was so popular that one of the first Super Shops performance centers was on it's path and that is actually the one that lasted the longest in the Seattle area.

You will never know how much you value your life until your maniac friend decides to jump a railcar loading ramp in one of these. Seatbelts were optional and everything in the cab is metal besides the steering wheel and seat.

Doesn't bother me except for when the filler hose rots out like it did in my 72.

That looks a lot like Paul Niedermeyer's truck , although I think his is a few years older. http://www.curbsideclassic.com/blog/cc-outtake-th

Honestly … it's pretty damn straight for a truck of that vintage that has been used like a truck.
It is begging to be swapped onto a newer chassis with no body or paint work.

Call me a lunatic, call me blasphemous, but if it were mine and in decent structural condition, I'd go find a low-mileage wrecked Ranger 2.3 Duratec and drop that in the engine bay. At 150 or so horses, the four cylinder would be right in the middle of what was offered when it was new, and I bet it doesn't weigh much more than a modern Ranger. 25 mpg and good reliability with classic good looks and awesome patina await!

      Sacrilege! Blasphemous sacrilege!
      Nah, you're probably right.

I'll call your 2.3 and up you to a Cummins 4BT. Fuel mileage, torque and with simple mods just a little over 300 HP. Plus see that building over there? It'd tow it.

I have one of these. 1966, pretty much the original paint job(s).
you can see it here behind the partially disassembled benz:
    <img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kyRHdz2i6N8/Uae2wbQDHVI/AAAAAAAACBg/KFAUG7IKnp0/w908-h681-no/IMG_20130518_150838.jpg" width="400"/>
Mine has a 390FE, toploader 3spd, 9" rear, somewhere around 450bhp, 550ft/lb torque. I could paint it someday, but I like the way it looks now.

I've got a 1965, 240-I6, 3 on the tree, SWB. You could fit two people under the closed hood if you so desired. Changing plugs was a dream. Finally parked it in the barn because it was just too much of a deathtrap to take my kids around in.
    Someday…

Yup. Got one. 1966, 352ci, 3 on the tree. Jethro the motorized wheelbarrow.
Them – "Wow, that's a really nice old truck you've got there! Are you gonna restore it?"
Me – "Hell, no! Why would I ruin it by doing something stupid like restoring it? That makes 'em Yard ornaments!"

The guys on "Trucks" on Spike did a front suspension swap on a truck of this vintage. They took out the cart axle and put in independent front suspension and disc brakes. Looked stock and had greatly improved driving dynamics. I love seeing these old beasts still making a living. I've driven several from this era through the 80's….always a ton of fun.
