The Hooniverse – Tom's 1969 Pontiac Firebird

1969 Pontiac Firebird lead

We’re back with another installment of The Hooniverse, where we take a high-definition look at an automobile that touches us in all the right places. The first vehicle in this series was the Aston Martin V12 Vantage. For our second video, we took a Cadillac CTS-V Coupe into downtown Los Angeles at midnight. Now, however, we’re turning back the clock with something a bit older. We’re grabbing the keys to a familiar 1969 Pontiac Firebird to try and explain why driving an old car… is a beautiful thing.

This is the same Firebird of the Project Phoenix posts we’ve run here on Hooniverse, and it belongs to my good friend Tom. There are still big plans for this car, but a few items have been addressed. Tom and I redid the interior carpeting thanks to an easy kit he bought from Classic Industries. The steering wheel has been replaced, as have the wheels and tires. Tom resprayed the black nostrils and popped on a new Pontiac badge. The gas tank was also recently replaced. Still, some additional items have been added since this video was shot (most notably a new air cleaner), others have been ordered, and a few more big-ticket pieces are in the works – so stay tuned… we may be revisiting this ‘bird on video real soon.

(Also keep an eye out for the unintentional guest appearance by the KBB HQ… wind noise forced us away from our initial shooting location)

One more thing, you drive an old car and you learn so many people are just plain nice. People stop to chat all the time and it really makes owner and stranger happy. Last trip for me it was a fellow from Sweden and another guy that had a PV for his first car.

Edit: Had an interesting reply to an old post of mine here from a guy. He said he works at Gawker and recognized my name.

Tower,
Does that Brandy your brother is fond of come from the port on a western bay? It sounds like your party will be great, did I ever show you the video of the Polish road block of wedding procession tradition? The rain here has calmed down, some t-storms were predicted but they only say chance of them now. All the water has receded at work, only one part of a road was badly damaged, and this is silly I know, but they put cones around it and filled it with gravel, so I come in Astrid and it always throws the back out slightly. It feels like I am winning when I miss the cones.
Hi Skay,
I had a very nice reply to an old comment here as well. I sent it to Kamil and hope he will run a story. It would be especially metaphorically panty dropping for you some parts in particular. I like how over all friendly and down to earth this place is! Glad you had a nice trip to mtns. I took a trip to Volo auto museum, it was great! The majority of the cars are for sale, and yes I could buy some, not outrageous, something for everyone really. I always dig how there are really incredibly old cars in the $10-20K range below what most people pay for brand new cars. At one point there was some GF or wife with a guy and their friends and there was a very very nice La Salle for about $60K. It was really something, and she said, "For that I could get a luxury SUV." He sort of said yes dear but it made my heart sink cause I saw how he was looking at the car. If you've never seen one (think this was my second in person), they are just incredibly plush inside and SO LONG AND TALL! Anyway, Aga called to see if I could get her some milk on the way home and first thing I said was, "I love you and thank you for letting me get that car." (I mean Astrid, I can't afford that La Salle, but an Imperial or Galaxie…)

smz, msz, bob………Can't believe the week is half over. It's been a busy, but great, week…………..thus far. It's much colder today, as forecast, but no snow as yet. It lightly misted early this morning, but that's all. I don't know what's going on up North or in the mountains. Did I tell you that I have powers over in Oppo? I can approve newbies and even edit/delete their posts. I've added quite a few guys, but haven't deleted any posts yet. Have a great middle of the week! Happy Hump Day!

Hi Skay,
How's this morning for you? I saw on FB someone driving in the snow last night in CO, so some parts must have gotten some later at least. Did you? I had some funny this morning. I went to load grease into a new grease gun and I am pumping the handle and pumping and pumping but nothing. So I thought I had an air bubble, there is an allen head screw to undo at the top for this. So I do, and a volcano of red grease erupts! So I am trying to thread the screw back in, but it's not working, getting pushed out all the time and I can't even see it. Then I decide I should pull the plunger back out, but of course my hands are covered in grease at this point and that is a strong spring. I finally succeed, but I can't get into the house to clean-up. Aga is in the backyard so I walk over to the gate and I can't open that even with my slippery hands, so I wave and call to her. Remember the grease is red, she sees me from the distance and it looks to her like my hand is just coated with blood. So she gets all scared, and at that point I lost it, bent over laughing, it did not even occur to me what it would look like 😀
Congrats on the new super powers! But you know what, I went to jalopnik just now, and I cannot even find oppo anymore! I am on the G+ version of oppo though. Soccer practices have went well! I keep getting really nice emails from parents too, so I must have improved! It's so nice to get those. Torquefest is tomorrow!

smz, zms, fog………We did get snow Wednesday afternoon and evening, and it melted right away. I'd say we had about 2 to 3 inches. It was a beautiful, wet Spring snow, badly needed. That's a very funny story about Aga thinking the red grease on your hand was blood. What kind of grease is red? To get to Oppo from the front page, there's a box that drops down when we click our profile name and then click Oppo. I also have it bookmarked. http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/

It rained at torquefest, but I had pizza too. Also I met with tempsjo! He brought me beer from WI and I brought him from Munich, TX, and Scotland. He also drove me around to show me this. Not pictured below is the TOMY outlet and toy museum. Also I took some scenic drives near Galena and Dubuque.

Glad you had pizza. ;D How neat that you saw tempesjo. He's one of my favorite people. I haven't seen him on Hooniverse for quite a long time. Of course, I don't have time to re-read the articles most of the time. My weekend was great with nothing special going on except some time with friends. Happy Taco Tuesday!

Hi Skay,
I miss him, mike_the_dog and mechimike too, but I sometimes see him on older stories, like maybe he is busy and comments a day later. Here's a secret, he actually smiles, pretty often even, in the real world. I was in a bad mood yesterday. The previous day I had to come back into work, was here until 2AM. Then yesterday right away I saw someone had downvoted two of my comments. So I went and saw what was-up and that story had been on TTAC, so I made comment that this was why. I must have struck a nerve, cause that got downvoted too. So then I read what I missed before and Phillips funny post about the V12 with a real troll there, so I said some stuff. I really worry about this place, like if they don't do a better job policing themselves it will get run over by comments like that.
Anyway, so then I'm off to lead a soccer practice and the softball and baseball teams have over run my field again. It's no big deal though, I will just go past them and have a practice in a corner near the road. But while walking and carrying all the equipment I nearly get clobbered by a ball hit by the bat, with me so loaded down there really was not much I could do and I was walking as close to the tree line as I could to get there. It was just dumb luck I did not get hit. At least they took a pause to let me get across then.
But it got me in a right mood, one kid recognized me, I think he's a cub scout, and said hi. So that's always cool, like I do this after school stuff and it seems to make difference in kids lives for better. Then I was like it really has been cool week so far really, had a den meeting, Aga made potato pancakes and meat with gravy, saw an orchestra concert with Michelle, taught Kevin some math successfully, time to have a good practice. And it was, all the kids were really happy and had a great time, after a bunch even told me so, so that's cool. Then I got home and after watching TV with the kids, Aga took a nice walk with her friends, I dug-up some old photos (cause an old favorite coach/teacher of mine is retiring) and sent them along for a nice book the kids are putting together, saw all sorts of old family photos along the way though, then Aga and I went to hot tub. So it's pretty sweet, why it took almost a baseball hit to the head, I have no idea why I'm so stupid like that.

smz, szm, tea………Half day left until my weekend starts, and I'm ready for it. Yesterday, we had rain most of the day, slow and steady until afternoon. I think we got a total of one inch. Some parts of the mountains and North of me got 4 to 12 inches of snow. It was awesome! Don't let the downvotes here bother you here. I've gotten them before too. At first, it hurt my feelings, and then I decided "who cares". This is the internet after all. There are a couple of guys here who always get downvoted no matter what they say. I upvote those. I think there are a few idiots who just downvote things for the heck of it. STUPID! I wonder what happened to Mike_the_Dog. If I remember right, he was who taught me how to post images here. He really was patient with me. I'll look back and maybe I can find it. Have a great weekend! TGIF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Skay,
I'm all better now, Kevin was second day at home. Jake was sick starting on Friday. What is peculiar is this bug seems to be skipping most girls! Anyway, mike_tho_dog is on FB and I chat with him there. I'm going to try and meet with him anbd some others in July, I'll get back to that. I know one time he stopped showing-up here cause some person was rude to him, sort of the last straw. He griped on it in an unrelated place on FB and I let someone here know. That person calmed him, and he started showing-up again. For a while there was better self policing, but after a while that person left (for other reasons) and so did mtd after a while too. So I feel really strongly that skitter is on to something, that a bunch of car people really are sensitive, the nice interesting ones, and will leave if there are meanies about and nobody to make the meanies skeedaddle. I'm afraid this place will fall apart though.
Anyway, I got a really nice phone call last week. My old buddy from college is going to be a dad! Yippie (actually a whole bunch also)! So he is moving from out west of me to out east. I was also going to meet with mtd and some others at a car show in July, so this is added to the trip. It is going to be a blast! He also gets to live close to his wife again, that was terrible before, his job had him in Kansas and her's in Michigan.
So now back to currenter time. Late on Fri Racin called about this (adding photos as I go along): https://plus.google.com/photos/101140337460005353… But Jake was sick. There was this CCCA lincoln highway cruise and the cars had stopped in a nearby town. So Sat I went and investigated. I helped a fellow from Canada with a Packard Straight-8, well until I had to leave to coach soccer games. Kevin was also in his play, so because of that I saw my parents and had dinner with them. I also saw the play, Aga went on Fri (there were three showings we did it so someone friendly was there every time). So that was good, cause I was up before 5AM vomitting. I just could not go visit my mom for mother's day. Aga went with the kids, gave the gifts, I called. Then on Monday I was a lot better (I actually crapped my pants at work, it was terrible – should have stayed home, but since I bike I have spare clothes here). I called my mom and had a way more coherent conversation 😉 Also for Aga I made mother's day a day late. She took Michelle for immunizations and I made a poster with the kids and Jake and I cooked a meal. Then we waited, and waited, and waited, wow it took a long time for the doctor visit. I played with Jake and mowed the lawn. Kevin slept the whole day almost (like I did on Sunday). Then she got back and I was all nice dressed and was wowed, so that was good. The food was similar to last year, noodles with mushrooms and a sauce based on alfredo. Also Jake made short cakes topped with whipped cream and raspberries.
Then Aga and I played this way too long: http://www.geoguessr.com/ She told some friends today "Oh, and Mike recognizes every country by the cars that he sees on the street!" cause they were impressed with her scores 😉
So that's the full report, off to coach soccer, road the bike, we had fitness day here, saw a red hawk eat something, eww, don't have a photo of that, but I saw that Biscayne again, and wow has the owner done a wonder! Have photos of that.
Have a good one,

Hello MZS! I know I've been gone a long time and I just wanted to check in with y'all. I hope you're over that bug Kevin and Jake also got. Maybe just Spring time sickness. Today is a great and very hot day(around 80 degrees) and I've just come back inside after spending around 20 minutes taking photos of plant life and what not. I got inspired by a photography show about Madagascar. Man what a magical island that is.
I look forward to visit it one of these days. It's a phototog's dream. I also took a look at that link you posted for the CCCA gathering and holy moly! I can't believe you got to see so many amazing classic automobiles. I especially loved that Talbot Cabriolet. Also I believe that open 1920s car, is an Franklin. With a rare air-cooled(John Wilkinson invented it for the car) engine. They were pretty advanced back then. Don't see too many around. Herbert H. Franklin was the one to start the company.

It's been another busy week for me, but in a good way. It was nice to see BB here. I've been wondering about him. Mother's Day was okay, but I was glad when it was over. Hi again BB,
I'm all better now, one of the kids in soccer was ill yesterday though, so it's still going around. Sure hope you get out to Africa and Madagascar! Those photos were really tough, the last simple camera I had got wet at torquefest so Aga let me borrow one of her super duper ones, and it was in manual and I had no idea. They were so over exposed it was hard o separate sky from the bright parts of the cars like roofs in iphoto later. The Franklin, I was walking around, had no idea and then I saw from far away what looked like a cooling shroud on a running board, so I ran over! I had never seen it, last night I got the rest of the photos done, and you can see the engine there. It's very interesting. Have a gret summer!
Hi Skay,
Girls did not get sick! School ends here soon too, we are off to FL in beginning of June, kids have no idea. Oh yeah, it's the dad mostly to blame, not going to thinks about that Poland thing though. I'm going to be on field trip to zoo with Kev tomorrow, yippie! This morning I figured-out how to lean out the carbs in Astrid WITH JUST MY FINGERS, it's so much easier now, trying to fit a wrench there was always annoying! Watch me burn my hand one of these times 😉 It was really hot here yesterday, well relatively, and I got head ache at soccer practice, but other than that was another good one. That simplicity thing, anticat found it, and I JUST noticed the head of the other one. It would have been great for the number games of yore.

Until you just now mentioned it, I didn't notice the head on the girl in that Simplicity GIF. Too cool! I had a great weekend with visiting friends and going to the mountains. It's still too early for the Aspens and wild flowers at higher elevations. Your trip to FL isn't far off. Where you going? Disney World? When and how are you telling the kids? There's a lot to see and do in FL. I love the Florida Keys. I saw the most beautiful sunset I've ever seen in Key West.

Hi Skay,
Glad you had a nice weekend! We did not have too much trouble with the storms here, just heavy rain in the very early morning. I feel very bad about the tornado for those affected! We are going to Disney, remember this all started with that girl from Poland. Also we are going to Sea World and beaches. And we are helping-out Aga's friend who got divorced by staying at her place. She has a new guy already! Did not take long for her. They have like seven kids now all together! They got this bus like used to be used for a hotel, ha ha ha! It's pretty awesome.
My weekend was really busy. Last week I saw those wood boring carpenter bees again. So I learned more. Turns-out trapping them like I did last year does not work. The larva grow into bees and have no trouble to bore out a new exit! They go dormant naturally after about three weeks, so that's why I thought all was well, doh! Anyway, I ripped all the wood off where they had holes. It was scary with them flying around. Jake also found nests in the fence. The technique this year is to spray to kill, then stab with coat hanger to break past any barriers (they spit-up wood to make these little rooms, I saw this from the wood I broke apart) and smoosh larva, then dust with insecticide, then wait (so they go in and drag the dust in the evening, then dust again, then trap with wood filler. I also saw them pollinating the flowers on this bush near there, so I dug all those out. So after I ripped all the infested wood out (I also found wasp and hornet nests), I painted all the rest. The new wood that has gone-up and all the rest that still is not also is painted all sides. I will get more wood-up tonight, probably will need one more night still after for the rest. Then another evening I will need to crawl around the area under the roof above the garage to see if I can find anything there (I sure hope not). They will try and come back, this could be a three+ year ordeal rinse lather repeat.
So I've been pretty tired every day. I also had flat in Astrid (did some lubing while I had her up – remember earlier grease gun explosion), had to fix a toilet, and the faucet that Jake broke too! Tomorrow is my b-day, so that means today is Vavon's! You should find a comment of his and wish him well, I did earlier.

Just got back in town from appointment and then Chinese buffet. Soooooooo good, but no sesame balls. 🙁 HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you! This weekend I have cub scout campout, my back will hurt again I bet. Tonight Michelle has b-day party, and my b-day was great. Aga made cake and kids made a poster. I sent Vavon a message on FB, with an animated Pug rally.

smz, zsm, sky……….How's your hurt back and leg now? Hopefully, it didn't ruin your weekend. I had a lovely weekend of a little bit of everything. I did go to a cookout of hamburgers, brats, spaghetti salad, spinach with strawberries salad (YUM) and homemade key lime pie. Everything was delicious and a great time was had by all. Our host was telling us about his working in the backyard with his shovel and hoe. I had a surprised look on my face and said "you had a hoe?" I got him good! Anyway, I did some shopping and also some work around the house, including washing the outside windows and my deck. So, now today seems like Monday. Do you remember 'leavethegun-takethecannoli' from Jalopnik years ago? He replied to a comment of mine Saturday, and we had a brief conversation. He was one of my first friends there and a really neat guy. He said he has an account here as ________cannoli (I forgot what he said). Anyway, that was a nice surprise to hear from him. Here's that thing I sent in a while back that I thought you might like:
http://hooniverse.info/2013/05/29/video-born-of-a-
Couldn't sleep today since 4 something AM 🙁 Glad you had a nice MD weekend! remember cannoli, but not so well – it's been a while, that was nice. I'm still thinking about the wheels. My back and leg are fine, yippie! I took an air mattress for camping so I did not feel very sore after. I also finished the bee stuff on Sat! Well I still have to climb into the garage attic area and hunt for sings of them in there just in case, but all the wood is replaced, painted, and up. It was three big garbage cans of wood I got rid of.
We had a great weekend too. After the camp-out and finishing bee stuff, family came over for Michelle and my b-day. Then my parents took the kids. We cleaned-up and went dancing, yippie! The next day the weather was threatening, so or plans changed, and a lot, cause of MD it was hard to find a place open for lunch. We did, omango, I think it's a chain Indian place, but it was very good. I would say healthier than the place we usually go to. We also went to the mall, which is rare for us. That was nice to just walk around without the kids. Highlight is Aga got new bikini bottom for the vacation! She does not understand (and you probably either) how much that is like the greatest thing for me. I swear being on the beach with her is what I am so much the most anticipating for this vacation! Then we tried to watch some TV, the new Arrested Development, but it is really bad. Just incredibly slow and boring. I have read that it gets better with ep. 4, we have plodded through two so far, that Monday we ended-up watching Middle instead.
Then same-old-same-old except last night. Kevin had an orchestra concert, he did great, but first I had to get the tires for the minivan and they were really slow. I had called the day before and they were supposed to get them, but I think they forgot and had to run really quickly to a nearby place and grab the third one. Then I had to race over to do a soccer practice. But I had Michelle and Jake, so I had trouble cause the rear seats were folded down. Jake rode in the way back with the tires. Then after practice two parents were late, so I was really rushed to get home, drop off the tires, and make it for the concert. Phew, today should be easy breezy.

If I were to get that mouse, I'd just put it somewhere so I could look at it. Also, I did watch that video………sounds of GT40 are awesome! I can tell that you can't wait for your vacation just to be at the beach with Aga……LOL. Of course, I understand. I've had a great week for everything, except the stinkin' wind blowing. It's calm and beautifully still in the early morning and as the day goes on, the wind gets stronger. Going to the mountains tomorrow…….can't wait. Pizza, wine and chocolate tonight! Hi Skay,
Hope your weekend was swell! Mine was pretty sweet, made a fire for the kids, made smores and took Astrid to a car show at a retirement community. In the past I've seen ones where they drive the residents around, was hoping this was going to be the same, oh well. The older folks really dug the Model A that was there the most I would say. There was a turbo charged 2200+ VW type 1, that was my fav, well also a green granada, that was sweet, wait also a last year Fiero, no the Gremlin, wait argh it was the ratty KG, gah that always happens!

I too like that turbo-charged VW. It's going to be hilarious with you and Aga putting on an act with the kids on your vacation. Too funny! I did go to the mountains Saturday and visited friends. The Aspen trees are in the early stages of leafing out and are very pretty. We saw a herd of wild donkeys when going through Cripple Creek. There must have been about 15 or 20 of them spread out over two blocks. They were eating vegetation in the ditches along side the road. It's Wednesday already! Happy Hump Day!

About to head off hopefully if computers cooperate, glad you had a grand time with aspens and donkeys. We are probably going to tell them in the morning so that they can go back to their rooms and grab stuff for beachy sunny fun (nature – come-on PLEASE cooperate too…) in the nick of time. Jake might be sad, he was at first not too excited about St. Louis but now he's like drawing pictures of the city and talking about it all the time, easy to please kid. The others are like gloomy cause I have been hamming it up with all sorts of fake car stuff we will be doing 😀 Kevin also has a crush on a girl here and is bummed about being away, but he won't let on, but he is. They are in orchestra together, both are pretty geeky, it's cute. Anyway, won't be commentating here much for a spell, keep the light on will ya?

Hi Stormies! It's been a little while. It's surprising how time flies. I hope you are ok $kaycog, the Storm Prediction Center has had high fire risks (and fires) in a lot of your state. I see mzs is enjoying a nice vacation in Florida. He's had some pretty cool pictures on facebook.
As for me, it's been pretty busy. My brother's bachelor party went well. Nothing broken in the hotel room which was my ultimate goal. The wedding went well too. I got a lot of complements on my speech which was good because I was nervous. I referenced a little bit of "The Pale Blue Dot" in the speech, you know, just to put life into perspective, but I don;t think very many people knew who that was. I've got another friend getting married in July and his bachelor party is next weekend and I am also getting together with some freinds this weekend in Milwaukee so the busy schedule will continue. Plus my fiance and I had a dance competitoon and level passing for a couple of weekends. That, plus planning our own wedding and honeymoon trip to Europe, and we both could use a nice relaxing break.

I am also trying to help my sister with her VW GTI that she has been having problems with. I think I mentioned it earier when the problem first started but it's now in the shop for the 5th time for the same problem, 3 times which stranded her and she had to have her car towed. It's been ok so far since her warranty has covered her costs (though getting stranded is pretty inconvienient) but that runs out soon and she doesn't want to continue with the repairs once that happens. She wants to get rid of it but she is having a hard time trading it in since this defect is now logged on carfax as "repeat warranty work" and she doesn't want to sell it herself because she would feel like a big jerk selling a broken car to someone. The customer service has basically ignored her so I wrote up a long post for their facebook wall to try and help get her a response. They did respond so far with the standard "contact our customer care hotline" but she has already been through that.

2. Tower_Of_Power Avatar
Tower_Of_Power

I hope something positive comes out of this for her, especially since I was the one who recommended a GTI in the first place, but who would think a 2-3 year old car with 26,000 miles would have such substantial problems?

Hi Tower!
Dang that really blows about the GTI. Maybe you have a CarMax nearby? They might take it, it's where I took my Golf. I know it's not right to generalize like this, but my buddy, his dad, and I all got Golfs about the same time and we all got rid of them for the same reason. It's how I got Astrid. It's funny cause I got the Golf because of my friend's and he got the '68 Volvo 145 he has now cause of Astrid. Also she can sell it being up front about all the trouble, how it stranded her, she does not want it anymore because it keeps happening, she hates the car, knows it hates her too, that's why it's going on, needs to get out of the abusive relationship, it could be funny. She can end the ad all up beat that it's a three year old GTI with 26k miles but saying buyer can roll the dice if they feel lucky. Maybe someone will buy it knowing the past at a bit of a discount.
I'm glad you having a blast with all the bachelor parties and your speech went well. What was the dancing competition like? How'd you two do? You're romantic for doing that, good job! Where are you headed in Europe?

Hi Skay,
Vacation was great, I'll check back in when Aga gets photos up. We went to Cocoa, Daytona, and Clearwater beaches – those were my fav parts. There may be a problem, I was upset that Aga was crying yesterday cause some things might be damaged in the home and us blamed. We got there and there were some things not right, but we did not care, you know how we are, all happy to be on vacation in FL, so we got there, let her know and thanked her. Plus at first I thought it was just her vacation house in a gated community from prior marriage that she lets friends and family stay at, but it seems like she uses it to make money now and we really were not doing her a favor. The lady texted Aga yesterday, said when the current people there leave she will send photos. We really don't know what we could have broken, maybe we got the couch wet is only thing we can think of. Anything that we did we will pay for but I worry that we are being accused of the stuff that was messed-up already when we got there – ants and fruit flies in the kitchen, rickety kid's bed, a broken lamp, smudges on wall, candy and other crap behind and around the beds and couches, etc. It seems like someone may have come in on the second day when we were out to check on the place, so it might not have been inspected for the people that were there before us.

1. ˏ♂ˊ mzs zsm msz esq Avatar
ˏ♂ˊ mzs zsm msz esq

We did a really good job of cleaning the place up before we left, WAY better than when we arrived – dishes washed and put away and counters washed even for example. I left some unused tickets for people that may come later, Aga left the guide books, we brought to IL and left fresh picked oranges for her and her family here at her house in IL that we got in FL, and the first thing she did was text Aga that she got reports of problems. I was making pool for the kids pounding new paving sand and all of a sudden I see Aga crying. It was terrible. So I texted her that A- Aga is really sad B- we['ll take care of anything we did and C- a list of stuff that was wrong when we got there. I'm not great at texting to begin with my fingers always press the wrong thing and I don't see even a period anywhere on that screen so it looks like a wall of text plus my hands are all shaking because of using the heavy tamper for the pool so I went for brevity in my text. Well she got all pissed off like I was saying her place was a dump. You know me, basically if there is a way to interpret something in a nice or mean way I write, go with the nice way every time. Anyway, then I explained again and apologized but Aga does not need any aggravation, you know how I am about her, so it made me sad that she was all sad about it too, she still has not been able to unwind about it all and we had a really crummy evening when Jake went to sleep, could not even get into Better off Ted, just went to bed soon. Anyway, had to get that off my chest, I hope that when the photos come in after these people leave it's something simple and we take care of it. We really had a great time and it was a neat house. Not too far away we could walk to this giant pool which was great, plus there was a little pool in the yard.
Like I said, I'll write more about the vacation itself when Aga gets photos up. It was a really great one. Yesterday Aga mowed most of the house (I did the rest) and I was able to finish making the pool for the kids yesterday. I also fixed the fountain in front of the house. Jake and the two of us made coasters in the basement. Michelle is at my parents and Kevin is camping. Jake is here during the day for a science camp, I had lunch with him. Kevin is all happy that he is seeing his girl again on Sunday (that's so cute). Then we leave for another 4th July vacation in MI.

Hey everybody, hope everyone's week is going good 🙂 Mine is pretty sweet. I just picked up the new Need For Speed Most Wanted and it's a great game. I think I like even better then Hot Pursuit from 2010. I also rented Gran Turismo 5, which I actually bought back in 2010 when it debuted and I hated it! Thought it was poorly made and just not fun at all.
I think it had something to do with the fact that making the game took so long, something like 7-8 years and for the last two the hype was built up, and up and when it finally came to market I was let down, thinking it was the holy grail of racing games and I was disappointed. Now after waiting 3 years I finally rented it to see if I'd like again. Well I've found out that after waiting 3 years and many updates for the game(fixing glitches and car model problems, plus DLC, that's Downloadable Content, like cars and little add-ons). I find that I really enjoy it now. Is it the best game ever? Well no, but I think it's a good game overall. Plus I just bought the 06' Ford GT they have in the game and it's super sweet to fling around various tracks. Anyway enough about video games;)
@MZS: Glad to hear you enjoyed your trip to Florida 🙂 But I hope your'll work out the problem with the vacation home. Whatever it is I'm sure it isn't too large of a problem. it's best not to get too stressed out about little things. Everything will fix itself eventually. Anyway it's raining this morning and I woke up early and went outside and just stood in the rainstorm for a few minutes and it's a great way to really wake up. Really refreshing! 🙂

Hi BB!
Glad you enjoying the games. I had some version of GT long ago was for the PS. I was never very good, I liked the Abe games instead the most, so did Aga. I think it was called like Ade from Oddworld or something like that. I was worried I would be caught in the rain recently, been storming here a lot. Aga told me that the pool was leaking, she put some duct tape over the hole, good girl! So that's why i had so much trouble filling it. I had not much time and the hole was near the bottom and my then Aga had filled it and it was leaking all afternoon again. The storm was coming, I put on swim pants a snorkel mask, and took a tube of high temp gasket sealer (was the red one, don't know if it matters here) and went down into the water and squeezed a bunch out with it going through the hole. Flattened a bit with my finger on both sides and it's worked since Monday. Pretty cool! Have you figured-out about school what to do?
Hi Skay,
Sweet – 50" – size does matter! Aga and I went out for an early anniversary dinner and while waiting read the texts again. It's just so obvious I was not being mean or anything, haven't heard anymore since. I think too we will stick to hotels from now on, well maybe tents. We were supposed to go camping next (Why do people use next when they mean this? I'll change the English speaking world starting now even if I show-up a week later everywhere!) weekend, but now not too sure. We were going with friends and they got a dog today and now don't know what to do, feel bad to leave a puppy with someone I bet cause a puppy is a lot of attention. But lady tried to cancel and can't so maybe I just sleep alone in a bitsy tent on three camping sites while I visit everyone I was supposed to in MI. I'd be like a king!
Aga is busily adding vacation photos, I think two pages now at least: http://agamama.blogspot.com/ I guess I should add some narration stuff… That splash mtn ride is really cool at night cause you get great views of the park all lit-up. So is the jungle cruise, it's kind of creepy then in the dark. We had dole whip there, that's like vanilla and pineapple float and also cream cheese pretzels, both really great. That stunt show and the jedi fighting were really fun and funny. At EPCOT we at in Germany and it was a blast cause of the show. They had these coca cola drinks you could try from all over the world there too, Japan was tastiest to me, some supposedly vitamin soda tasted like carbonated fruit punch. There was a mission to mars ride there that Jake went on three times at least, it was pretty sickening. Discovery Cove was incredible, you know I like to snorkel? Well I do and did. Plus all the food and drinks were included, I drank a lot of beers. And I swear the place was full of moms from like Brazil or Argentina or something in these itsy bikinis, it was like non stop COTD. Then you can see how cool the house was. Also Kev was on high honor roll, I'm really proud of him, also on this trip there were many times when he impressed me with his maturity, I love that 5'9" or whatever he is now kid. Michelle was great too a lot, especially with Jake, like carrying him around and just mothering him when we were busy. Oh that reminds me, Jake's here at work for a summer camp, I've been having lunches with him. It's fun, but the neatest thing is since I've done the scouts and soccer there are three other kids there that know me, so that's always cool like how the kids are all, "Oh hey, Mr. Mike, what are you doing here?" Jake wants to do karate next season though, so my coaching might be over, bittersweet.

That was funny. So what did you do for the secondary plans? We've been having fun here, though I had a bad cold on Sat, mostly better now. MI was great trip, Aga has some photos in the usual place. I took a do to myself as well. First I met my old college buddy and his wife. They are about to become parents. Oh man he made rhubarb crisp for me! Then I drove over to Yipsi, a lot went down, and only neerd could make it, but he did and it was great to meet him. Regarding that house in FL, I think everything is settled, we gave the game hoping she will get it to whoever lost it. The lady would never call Aga or show the photos nor was she or her husband around the times she went by. I think that it was not really anything that we did after she dealt with the company and that she is too embarrassed to talk with us, but I'm speculating at this point. Everyday has been fun stuff for kids lots of play dates and the like. Yesterday Michelle went tubing from a pontoon boat and I took the boys to see Pacific Rim. If the language had been better, it would have been perfect movie for boys of all ages. Also Aga took the youngest kids to Chicago (Kevin and I were pretty miserable with the cold) to meet her aunt from Poland. She is on a whirlwind cross country drive in like ten or twelve days or something, neat adventure. It was the taste of Chicago then, so that was cool. Kevin had worked a brat fest the day before, so we got to meet my parents there and after at least, but we were suffering. But yeah, then he went to my parents to swim in the pool near their house, the little goober was not as sick as he was saying and made me look bad, ha hahaha!

I got to the show – actually that was kind of an adventure to start with, cause you had to drive past an apt parking lot to get to it. So I was close for quite some time driving around looking here and there, I even stopped at a gas station to ask, one that when I got to the show you could see it from there. I was driving looking around when I saw an old jag like a 1[234]0 go by the other way and turn, so I made my way back and found it. Oh right, any way I pull in and the very next car was a Volvo Amazon! But it sounded great. It ended-up having the fuel injected 2L engine from a 140 but the exhaust was so that two ports went into one pipe instead of the usual four into one. It had all sorts of neat touches, like there was no need for choke anymore, so there was a toggle switch there and it enabled the overdrive behind the gearbox, so it was a 5 spd. But the guy had kept the remote shift, so there was not that long pudding mixer, which was kind of cool too, but it seemed a bit uncomfortably back really. Oh man that must have been boring to read, sorry buddy.
Any news on the GTI? Still holding-up? Oh it's that kind of dance competition. Yeah I can see how that would be a chore, drat, she must love you. Have you two seen Playbook? The movie with Jennifer Lawrence about the dance competition in part? It's romantic, I recommend. Aga and I have a date coming-up from Sat-Sun, but can't figure-out what to do cause of the short notice. One thing is the beer fest, but the good tickets with food are sold-out. Another is the street concert in Chicago, but none of the bands appeal to us unlike last year (different one). Also both are really expensive surprisingly. So we need to think of something else.
I hope you do Oslo on the trip. I have relatives in Norway and I visited. I spent a day in Oslo and really enjoyed it. One very nice thing is the Viking Ship museum. It is not very big, I think it was three ships, but it was really something to see them and think about how daring people were. Also nice was the Edvard Munch museum and there was the sculptures garden. One of the sculptures near there was of Niels Henrik Abel, a mathematician, so that was impressive. He looked like a god, hee hee hee, I think the sculptor must have exaggerated a bit.
Have a good one,

TowerofPower………Your upcoming trip sounds incredible! Be sure to keep track of the places you went……like a diary. I bet you're both really excited for both the wedding and the trip. We FINALLY got some rain Sunday night/Monday morning. It rained steadily, and I think we ended up with about one inch. The trees are so happy now. And so am I. ;D Ciao!
zsm, smz, poi………The secondary plans when trip to mountains was cancelled was out-of-town shopping for just a few hours. Had to get stuff done around my house…….you know, the usual blah, blah, blah. That link was hilarious. I had forgotten about the pink roses and chocolate that Mr. Howser promised me. Too funny! I hope you and Kevin are over your colds and that you didn't pass it around to the rest of the family. Summer colds are usually worse than winter ones. Happy Hump Day!

lol…your stories aren't boring, they are usually quite interesting! My sister's GTI is holding up so far from the most recent repair. We will see how it lasts though she still wants to sell it now. We are going to have a movie night tonight, I'll see if I can find Playbook in my on demand stuff.
We are doing Oslo for sure. Thanks for the tip on the Viking ship museum, that sounds very cool. We will also be checking out the art gallery with Edvard Munch as it has one of Coe's favorite paintings, The Scream. We will probably rent a car and drive around the countryside for a day also. We are working on ideas for the Germany portion of the trip and which city, or cities we want to head to. I really feel that if I'm going to be in Germany, I should probably do some sort of "Ring Taxi" at the Nuremburgring.

I'm glad you got some moisture. Seems like we've been talking about your drought forever, I hope this is a sign of a change in patterns and you can continue to get some rain for a while.
Anything planned for the weekend? I'm doing some local family visiting. Should be fun!

Hi Skay,
Almost done here, yippie. Kevin and I are not 100% yet sadly, you can hear it in our voices and sometimes we still cough, but we both feel way better. Michelle got us both, Aga seems fine, and Jake has been at grandparents, so I think that's it. Hey guess what, my parents are taking the kid tomorrow! So Aga and I get to spend some time all romantic like. We still have no final plans though cause of short notice, but we'll think of something! I'm really happy and thankful about it. Aga did not like my two day circle plan through parts of IL and WI, oh well. She recommended renting a boat, but I just talked with a coworker and seems not a good idea because of how bad the police are getting as well as the idiots on weekends lately. So at this point I have no idea, only 100% thing is Polish store.
Tower,
At some point since I was thereThe Scream (actually there are a few versions turns-out I think) was stolen from that museum. I wonder if they got it back? yup wiki confirms it's back on display. If you drive around and it's warm, I recommend Kristiansand. You will go by fjords if I remember right on the way (or you could take train and rent car when you got there from Oslo, Norwegians drive slowly). That city is neat in itself, but you can hike in the mountains, there are fjords to visit from there too with very small communities, the beach is pretty cool, and there are islands reachable from the beach too. You should convince your sis to sell the GTI now before the next trouble. She can disclose all the trouble she has been having, but it will be way easier to sell if it's currently running well than if it's just a roller later.
Have a good one,

No biggie weekend. I'll tell mzs about it. Happy Taco Tuesday!
msz, smz, hew………I had a typical weekend in town…….you know..blah, blah, blah. I did have friends from out-of-town Saturday, and we went to dinner at favorite Mexican restaurant. Before they got here, I cleaned and did laundry (blah, blah, blah). Sunday was church and paperwork. What did you and Aga decide to do on your "romantic" weekend? It's so good that you can have some time together without the kids on occasion. Later!

Hi Skay,
Weekend was great. The plans we made were all jumbled though, cause Aga entered a photo contest that an Indian place we go to was having. We won that (not much competition, I think only us even). Anyway, they had a food truck at the beer fest and we got two tickets, so that was sweet. What we did is that day first went to that city and browsed board game and book stores. Then we went to the beer fest. It was in Naper Settlement, so we walked to get Bell's strolled around, looked at the old buildings some (our second date ever was there), got some food (steak burger – was gross sadly being all vieny, coconut curry and wrap, samosa, and two brats). The brats were from Wurst Sausage (ha) and really excellent, we had one first later Aga had the second. So we found a table in the shade near the band and danced and drank. There were times for special beers, we did those some, I found a brewery Ten Ninety from Zion IL that made a great wheat beer (is that what witbeer is?), also there were cars to check-out, like a new Mazda6 (neat-o to drunk-o me-o). It was really nice, dancing, but I did drink too much in the sun, I don't know how much, they only marked three of my fifteen tickets, I think they were just doing that for people that were troublemakers, but I got home, cooled off in the pool, watched some TV with Aga, and went to bed, and then threw-up, dang. Oh but the second sausage, a drunk guy there said something really inappropriate to Aga (you can imagine considering the sausage), I felt really bad about it but especially for the girl who looked like she was just 16 who was selling them, that was pretty ridiculous, everybody but him was really swell there though, and yeah that guy doesn't get much action I bet, so sucks to be him.
Anyway next morning I was feeling pretty good again and we went to the beach in Chicago. That was swell. Then we went to Polish grocery store and finally to Cheesecake factory. Got home, played some games, and I got the kids. It was great, no cleaning. Also this is pretty funny image:
<img src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/1000887_10200901696656836_965398367_n.jpg"> Out of the blue Dearthair noticed the photo from the FL vacation and Dr. Danger made the very funny photoshop. Everybody here really liked it. The kids were talking about it even when I got home from work still, it really made me very happy. One bad news though, my work changed some settings on the web blocking stuff and hooniverse is getting a bit iffy for me to use. They just used to block some images, I got a scary warning embedded in the page yesterday as an image though and I don't want to deal with our IT desk group any time that might happen again, dang. Also lately there have been some not nice comments here and there sort of rubbing me the wrong way, so anyway, bad news is I won't be on hooniverse so much, it was fun, grrrrrr…. I might be able to find a technical solution to the blocking like with requestpolicy, but if too many people are being pricks in the comments, what's the point then anymore? I haven't made-up my mind yet though yet for sure.
Oh and here's a neat thing, you know thirdpedalgirl? She's organizing a meet-up for midwest car folk and I'm only two hours away, yippie!

How was mtns? VS commented about TDH being not nice to you on oppo+ not too long ago, so you can delete comments like those now, yippie. We had very nice weekend! In the morning I made Norwegian style waffles and pancakes, very fatty, very good. Then I went out and fixed my bicycle, was time for a new rear wheel and tire. Then we went on bike ride. Then Jake went to drive RC cars with a friend and I finished a movie with Kevin. After that we went over to my parents' place and ate a lot. Sunday the big thing was we went to a county fair. I liked that the best, bust some stuff everybody else liked too. Like Jake was in this pedal powered tractor pull and there was a pig race, we tried maple syrup, ground corn, made rope, etc. I liked all the tractors and old engines the best. Also I saw the end of the first part of the demolition derby with Jake, he liked it, but got bored, so instead in the evening I took him to play tennis with me. We also watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Today Aga took the kids to Great America. I got back just now and fed Max. I have to wrap it up cause I can see he wants to go on a walk. But on the way back from work my crank in my bicycle started making a bad sound and felt not right too, so poor fell wants to play and clearly was bored all day, I'll probably just hang out with him.

On my fifth play on a quarter poker machine, I got four aces with a two kicker. I won $1020!!!! I came home $1000 ahead. I was so excited you'd think I won a million dollars. We're getting some nice rains now, but I heard on TV last night that there is still a drought. The watersheds are way below what they should be. Your county fair sounds like a lot of fun. I think the county ones are the best. I have no idea why TDH thinks I'm a guy. He's really relentless. Last Friday was "My Car Friday" theme day on Oppo, and I posted a "Not My Car Friday' pic. Wow you actually won money at a casino! That must have felt very good. What are you going to spend the money on? I bet there is a place you can rent a GT for about that much. Wait, take that back, I never bet you, just a figure of speech. I forgot one big thing from the weekend, one of our neighbors is German and he had a birthday party. He set-up a disco in his basement so Aga and I did a bunch of dancing, it was great. Basically it got a bunch of other people to dance later. Aga also took teh kids to Great America on Monday, the younger two had free tickets that were about to expire, and they had a great time. Aga put more photos online.
Hi Biggles,
That song was very European, the video part was very choppy, my internet is slow, so I could only listen. I think it must have been hidef, I hear youtube changed something and it messes-up the bit rate selection now, but the lyrics were that sort of feely thing that I imagine in Eurovision style songs. Watch, I'll find-out it's your sister now, maybe should have held my tongue. Here's something neat-o, as soon as I finish the commentary on the Deathstalker II DVD I am about to watch Finnish TV crime drama! Hi Skay,
Glad you got that rain. I've been working hard here at work, stressful bah! Anyway, today after work I rode my bike to and from a cruise night, was good for stress relief, but the funny/bad/gross thing was that some dog peed on my helmet, the nerve! Today also Aga came by for lunch with the two younger kids (Kev was off playing putt-putt with a buddy). Also last weekend I went to an all pontiac car show. I've met a few Fiero guys and they are really nice, that we cool. This weekend is a busy one again, coolest thing is I'm taking the boys to a steam show, like old fashioned farm equipment. And Sunday we are going to a state park if weather is still nice. One really cool thing I almost forgot about, Aga and I went on a date. We ate Indian, oh man I should make a list, when I have more time I will, cause the food was really something, and then walked around the downtown. We danced at two bars too. The first on had a bachelorette party (or maybe it was for a divorce, not sure), and it was hilarious to watch. I mean seriously, they had this blow-up guy with an erect member they were dancing with, just insane stuff. And it was also funny to watch the younger people being sort of awkward and shy interacting with each other. Some would get so animated, it was almost like watching Sims in real life 😀 Oh and I was stuck between these two really drunk guys while getting drinks at the bar, one was dressed like he had just been in a play from the '30s and I think the other guy was there cause he just had gotten divorced and was not taking it well.

Which Finnish crime drama are you watching? I haven't really watched many of them myself, I spend much more time watching, reading and listening to foreign stuff than Finnish. Grew up in bilingual family(Swedish/Finnish) but started learing English in school at the age of eight or so.. Started using computers and the internet a couple of years later and since then I've mostly read and written in English. Now I find myself thinking in English pretty often, and I find it easier to express myself in written English than in Swedish or Finnish.
I use all three languages at work most days, I should really be better paid. Or get a new job, to be honest. For the last five years it has been sucking the life out of me.

The next step is Skay usually finds the new place and lets us know. Was one of your parents Finnish and the other Swedish? Or did you grow-up near the border? My job is draining on me often too, I work for a dept of energy lab and not as a scientist, so it can be rough. They treat the scientists very well, everyone else, well sometimes the scientists can be very rude, but in general it has been pkay for me with regard to that, but it's just sort of a drag because of budget stuff. Enjoy your trip! I saw a 'than on the way home from the airport last night. I was irked that the the passenger side headlight seemed dimmer in my rear view. Also that I passed it in a Honda minivan, that poor People's Bentley.

The company I work for is headquartered in Irvine. I agree on the streets comment but despite hiring some nice cars from the Hertz (??Gold??) collection I have never been brave enough to drive one as I would here in the UK. Too worried about some sneaky cop hidden in a corner. But Ortega Highway and Route 133 – now that made sense early in the mornings.

I grew up in Irvine and because there is hardly any "real" crime, you will be pulled over for the most arcane violations. And if you are "ethnic", you will certainly be pulled over for going 51 in the 50 zone on Culver Drive.

Ortega is cop country on the weekends, but nice and empty during the week. Actually, Upper Divide off of Ortega is even more empty.

Yep.
Funny to hear him thinking through what he'd do with the car. "It's all original, numbers matching, like to keep it that way…but probably swap the trans and brakes and suspension…".
The central issues of actually using your classic in the modern era:
How much diminished performance can you tolerate when upgrades really aren't that expensive (compared to a new car)?
How much upgrading before your classic isn't a classic any more?

1. dead_elvis Avatar

I had a moment of cognitive dissonance there too.
Suspension? Absolutely. Brakes? If I was DD this, yes. But the idea of swapping the tranny & using the term "numbers matching" seem mutually exclusive. However, I'd much rather see a car like this used & driven daily (or as near possible) and modified as the owner deems necessary than turned into an over-restored trailer queen.

For a DD, gotta go with the manual trans and updated suspension.
When kid #3 arrives and he has to pass it on to another hoon, they won't give a crap that it isn't 100% original.
Just that it's a 350 with a 4 speed and handles worth a crap.
Don't expect BarrettJackson to care for a car like this, but the real enthusiast will.

Honestly, I think it's like an old house. You want to keep the stuff that makes it special, toss the stuff that makes it a bit less safe. In a house, you keep the old moldings, but you get rid of the old school wiring that starts on fire all the time. So personally, if I had the money for a classic, it would be getting modern brakes and tires, because I don't like crashing.

Right now I'm considering EFI options.
It's annoying to have to warm up the Falcon for like 5 minutes before it'll even drive. If I could just lean in and crank the key, that'd be better.
…but (aside from the money) I'm reluctant to ruin the minimalist old-school engine bay. But on the other hand, that's kind of a silly vain reason not to have a car that runs better and faster.
The best middle-ground for appearance and performance is either one of the bolt-on EFI TBI setups (~$2k) or a set of EFI stacks for 2-3X that much…which is more than a crate engine that'd double my horsepower to begin with.

I just stumbled on this again cause of the stormchaser thread, but what is it about the falcon that makes it so that it needs to warm-up before you drive? Does the choke only affect the butterfly and not enrichen too? Is it an electric choke? Do you have some sort of aggressive cam or something else like a vacuum leak? Maybe you should check valve lash when cold just in case?

Good video, you really 'get it' as to why people love driving older cars. Even though my Caprice wagon is not quite on the same level as other old cars, I still have people wax nostalgic when they see it. Truly an awesome feeling.
P.S. Thanks for not adding any generic quasirock guitar music.

Whoa… You would think, after the dick thing Matt did, but no in fact they have no shame and will use this video to make some cash. I hope people like Startle-A-Thompson's Gazelle Ltd. come over here more though. What a great comment, and what a load of crap to have to go past some unfiltered comments garbage to get to it after seemingly dozens of clicks.

Gawker's ever "improving" comment system insures that I read very few of them. It's impossible to follow a discussion thread.
I did dig for the one you noted, and agree with you whole-heartedly.
