The Chrysler Sno-Runner; A Small, Affordabe, and Fuel Efficient Chrysler!

By Jim Brennan Mar 23, 2010

Thanks to Deartháir’s posting about a Tracked Motorcycle, and in honor of Two-Wheel Tuesday, I thought I would dredge up this little piece of history. Ok, so it doesn’t exactly have two wheels, but I think it’s appropriate….. well, maybe not, but enjoy anyway.

There was a brief time when Chrysler was producing a small, affordable, fuel efficient and good looking vehicle that wasn’t a Shelby. Though not a car, the Chrysler Sno Runner was a little vehicle with Hoons in mind. The single ski, narrow tracked snow cycle was produced by the Outboard Marine Division of Chrysler and available for about $700 in 1979 dollars. It featured a two-cycle Powerbee (yes, that’s right, Powerbee!) engine that produced a whopping 7 hp and, with some luck, could get you up to 35 mph.

Sadly, the early 1980’s financial downturn for Chrysler meant the Sno Runner was canceled and all the remaining stock sold off by liquidators for just under $300. It’s been estimated that around 28,000 were made, but the real number was lost to time. If you’re in a snowy climate, one can be had in the $300 to $800 range on eBay depending on condition. 1. I saw one of these for sale at the local motorcycle swap meet in January. I think I'd seen photos of one once before, but this was definitely my first encounter with one of these little beasties in the flesh. Looked like it would be a friggin' blast to ride, and if I'd had a spare $700 eating a hole in my pocket, I'd have been sorely tempted. Alas, all I ever have lately are pockets full of no money…

  2. Why mess with a Chrysler when you can have a Porsche? There's a spare Porsche 212 Ski-Bob kicking around my garage. Of course, it never had an engine but that makes for even better gas mileage.

  3. I Hope Everyone doesent Underevaluate the true Importance of what you have posted here…Please guys dont skim read this take time and read into thouroughly….Thumps up to the Writer…Great work!

  4. I have one of these in great condition with owners manuel if anyone is interrested.

    1. I also would like the owners manual. i have one of these sitting in my garage that ive been messing with and would like to have ready by winter.

  5. How much are you willing to sell it for? I also might just want to buy the owners manual if that is possible?
