Roadside Attractions: 2001 Isuzu Rodeo Sport

IMG-20130607-00884

It’s not often I come across a small SUV that I really like (Jeeps excepted), because a lot of them are underpowered and of course less capable than their full-size counterparts. However, on my way home from work last Friday night, I spotted this little trucklet and had to stop for a quick look. I walked away, interested.

Details on the For Sale sign are pretty slim,

$4,500

80,120 miles

but there are a few clues we can gather just by looking around.

It has a V6, judging by the badge on the tailgate announcing as such. A quick peek in the cab shows a 5-speed manual and the transfer case. The Rodeo Sport seats five, but still has a decent amount of cargo space in the back. There also seem to be some body panels out of alignment, which is always a concern. Has it been wrecked? Rebuilt? Taken over one too many jumps?

The first I noticed when I looked in the cab was not the manual transmission shifter; it was not the transfer case; it wasn’t even the relatively good condition of the seats and interior. No, the first thing I noticed, unfortunately, was the clutter in the seat. Selling a car is really not difficult – pick up your trash!

Because this is a frame-on-body truck, it probably rides like, well, a truck. With a short wheelbase and a removable top, the ride is probably a little jittery and noisy. However, being able to go off road on narrow trails (I’d probably remove the steps) with a few friends so pretty appealing to me. I don’t know about you, but if I were in the market for an SUV or even a compact pickup, I’d give this a second look.

I personally enjoy at the end when the announcer states, "battery included."

…This had been haunting me since I was a kid. I always assumed, being car-obsessed even then, that I'd somehow made up these Isuzucentric lyrics (and the associated memory of Amigos descending a flight of stairs…) after seeing this…

Hey, that looks like my old truck in the background (white F-150).

It's a great truck. It just happens to be mine – bought it a few years ago from a friend in the area.

I'll be buying a daily driver some time in the near future. My parents suggested something with AWD and good ground clearance for the snow. This probably isn't what they had in mind, but this just earned a spot on my list of candidates.

I owned one of these from 2001-2005. Bought it new and drove it for 80,000 miles. I'd still be driving it but started having kids. Mine was the hardtop version which I was disappointed to discover couldn't be removed without some technical expertise. I bought it because it was the least expensive vehicle I could buy at the time that would tow 5000 lbs., which it did without any trouble. There was a really strong Isuzu dealer in Birmingham for many years, and I still see this model (or the Amigo) occasionally. The Rodeo Sport/Amigo were good little runabouts and I'd love to find another, although I'd offer $2500 on this one. It's a solid little truck that will tow a boat or small camper. What more do you need?

Not a horrible price for an amusing trucklet with a very desirable power train. Your worried about easily removed clutter? It's just free stuff into the deal, easily disposed of, and it likely means there's also a piggy bank in the seats.

Are the brakes on these things the same nightmare as the trucks and the troopers. Four wheel disks sounds good untill a caliper has to be sourced. A buddy of mine had a pickup that needed both rear calipers, he ended up waiting almost a month for them and in the meantime got a s-10 and sold the isuzu.

I had the biggest automotive crush on the Amigo when I was like 8-12. No idea why…just really thought the removable rear top was awesome.
For $2500, you can say it's like a half-price Wrangler.
    For $4500, get a Wrangler.

Stay away. Transmission issues galore. Also these six cylinder engines consume a lot of oil because of the piston rings. The 4 cylinders were known for valve train issues. One of those vehicles that i wanted very badly but hearing reports of the aforementioned issues kept me away. Just like the E39 M5 and its' maintenance issues.
