The Dodge M43 Power Wagon Ambulance sits near the top of my Zombie Apocalypse Survival Vehicles list. Simply put, there are few vehicles that better embody the “Goes slow, goes everywhere” mindset and none that do it with as much simplicity. Everything’s big and imprecise. All shortcomings were solved with more steel. It’s that peace of mind that’ll have you and yours sleeping comfortably in the back whenever you venture outside of your fortified compound out by the Salton Sea.
The ’60s era Dodge Power Wagons came from a time when a truck was a working mule, not a show horse. As such, the base engine in this one is a 230c.i. flathead six. It doesn’t matter what how much horsepower or torque it makes, because it’s running through a granny-low 4 speed, 2-speed transfer case and what are likely 5.38:1 gears in the axles. You’re going nowhere fast.
The ambulance version of the old M-trucks is particularly rare, with most examples being hopelessly rusted out or restored to perfection. Neither of those is particularly interesting to us; but this one, with it’s decent (not rusted out) condition and rebuilt (but removed) engine and complete drivetrain looks like a sweet buy at $2999.

Hmmmm… I'd have to figure out a way to get a Cummins Turbo Diesel from a current Ram HD into it, so it could get out of its own way.
-
Easily accomplished.
Google is your friend.
Given that Cumminses have been around for a good 20 years now, there's no shortage or wrecked 3/4 or 1-ton Dodges from which to pull an engine + tranny + fuel system. -
I have a 54 like this , you change the diff gears and it's a new vehicle. with better mpg's.
-
where do you get the gears and what ratio did you go to how much would it cost to have it done

These are mostly 1950s era. This is probably the only ambulance around that hasn't been made into a MASH replica. All the M37s that I have seen around here have had the soft tops replaced with a permanent hard top made out of what looks like roofing tin and rivets. I'm guess that most of the ones I've seen were surplussed out of the state forestry commission and it must have been done by them. Yet another sub $10k very slow, but not too slow, vehicle that I would be tempted to get and drive to work. It falls in the same speed category as an original Model T/Model A , an original Mini (non-Cooper model), or a Crossley.

thatd make a sweet rv conversion

That is some serious fucking desert out on Power Line Rd.
-
If you zoom back a little bit, you'll see a tiny body of water.
I used to waterski there. -

Oh sure, now that the secret compound has been made public, you will all have to die to maintain its secret!
