NASCAR: Daytona Coke Zero 400 (Daytona International Speedway) Racing at America’s birthplace of speed on Independence Day weekend? It doesn’t get much more Stars-and-Bars than that, although we can overlook that a diet soda is the Main Event’s title sponsor. Nationwide runs into the dark on July 4th while Sprint Cup wraps up their weekend with another evening race under Daytona’s lights. Website: NASCAR site. DIS site. Event page. Weekend schedule. Supporting series: Subway Firecracker 250 Powered by Coca-Cola (NASCAR Nationwide) Live coverage: Sprint Cup – Saturday @ 6:30 p.m. ET on TNT (TV) and Motor Racing Network (Radio/Streaming audio). Nationwide – Friday @ 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2 (TV) and MRN (Radio/Streamin audio) IndyCar: Pocono 500 (Pocono Raceway) IndyCar will run its third “oval” race of six this season, though heavy emphasis need be placed on the quotation marks there. Three-sided Pocono Raceway earns its nickname “The Tricky Triangle” with a layout that bears more resemblance to a Bizarro-world road course than a proper oval. Website: IndyCar site. Pocono site. Event page. Weekend schedule. Supporting series: Indy Lights Series Live coverage: Sunday @ noon ET on NBC Sports Network (TV) & Sirius 213/XM 209 (Satellite Radio). Live timing and streaming audio on IndyCar Race Control. NHRA: Summit Racing Equipment Nationals (Summit Motorsports Park | Norwalk, OH) Big horsepower is nothing if not American and the NHRA gives that in spades. Perfect complement to the Fourth of July. Website: NHRA site. Summit Raceway site. Event Page. Weekend schedule. Entry List. Live coverage: Sunday @ noon ET (Live) on ESPN3.com with replay Sunday 9:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2. ARCA: Herr’s Chase the Taste 200 presented by Federated Car Care (Winchester Speedway | Winchester, IN) ARCA runs a short 1/2-mile oval, usually an entertaining venture for the big-power stock cars. Website: ARCA site. Winchester site. Event page. Weekend schedule. Entry list. Live coverage: Sunday @ 2:00 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network. Atlantic Championship Series: Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course The SCCA-sanctioned open-wheel series runs at the vaunted Mid-Ohio circuit, a staple of the SCCA’s schedule. Website: Atlantic Championship. Mid-Ohio site. Weekend schedule. Supporting series: F2000 Championship. F1600 Formula F Championship. Live coverage: Live timing on FA site or via RaceMonitor for smartphone/devices. SCCA Majors Tour East: Watkins Glen The long weekend creates great opportunities for the amateur racer so it should be no surprise the SCCA will draw a big field to Watkins Glen over Independence Day, including 37 Spec Miatas. Website: Majors Tour site. Watkins Glen site. Event page. Weekend schedule. Entry list. Live coverage: Live timing on Majors site or via RaceMonitor for smartphone/devices. SCCA Majors Tour West: Portland International Raceway The West Conference wraps up the Majors Tour with its final event of the year before the Runoffs at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The entry list includes lots of open-wheel cars, making up nearly a quarter of the field. Website: Majors Tour site. PIR site. Event page. Weekend schedule. Entry list. Live coverage: Live timing on Majors site or via RaceMonitor for smartphone/devices. 24 Hours of LeMons: Sebring International Raceway LeMons teams bring their jalopies to tarnish Sebring’s sterling international reputation. The rough airfield circuit tends to beat on cars, so this is an interesting pairing. Website: LeMons site. Sebring site. Event page with weekend schedule. Hooniverse preview. Live coverage: Live timing on Specialty Timing or via RaceMonitor for smartphone/devices. ChumpCar World Series: Spokane County Raceway The Pacific Northwest’s ChumpCar teams love Spokane County, which hosted a 36-hour race last year. This year, the two-race weekend includes a 12-hour race Saturday and a six-hour “sprint” Sunday. Website: CCWS site. Spokane County site. Supplemental regulations with weekend schedule. Live coverage: Live timing on CCWS site or via RaceMonitor for smartphone/devices. NASCAR Canadian Tire Series: ICAR NASCAR’s series north of the border should be considered an honorary American series this weekend with gobs of horsepower around the Quebec circuit’s winding 2.1 miles. Website: CTS site. ICAR site. Event page. Weekend schedule. Supporting series: Canadian Touring Car Championship. Formula 1600. Sportsman. Canadian Supercar. Live coverage: Delayed broadcast July 13 @ 11 a.m. ET on TSN (TV – Canadia) ChumpCar World Series: Calabogie Motorsports Chump’s Northern Region also runs at Calabogie, a favorite of series regulars for its tree-lined technicality. Website: CCWS site. Calabogie site. Supplemental regulations with weekend schedule. Live coverage: Live timing on CCWS site or via RaceMonitor for smartphone/devices. FIA European Truck Racing Championship: Red Bull Ring What’s the most American series running in Europe today? Big-rig racing. Why doesn’t America have truck racing yet? Because our truck drivers are too busy hauling stuff across this great country. Website: ETRC site. Red Bull Ring. Live coverage: None. Highlights on Truck Race Organization site. V8 Supercars: Townsville 400 V8 Supercars aren’t really analogous with NASCAR, but they are big V8s and Australians are kind of like Americans, right? The V8s get three races, as do the supporting Australian GT racers. Website: V8 Supercars. Event page. Weekend schedule. Supporting series: Australian GT. V8 Utes Racing Series. Porsche Carrera Cup Australia. V8 Development Series. Live coverage: V8 Superview (Streaming, pay site). Live timing. Blancpain Sprint Series: Zandvoort Blancpain’s two-race weekend heads to Zandvoort, a circuit on the Dutch coast of the North Sea, which makes sense because “Zandvoort” means “Sand Voort.” The Blancpain series headlines with GT3-spec machinery, but the undercard includes some great series, including the BOSS GP, which is like recent-vintage racing for retired open-wheel cars. Website: Blancpain site. Zandvoort site. Event page. Weekend schedule. Entry list. Supporting series: GT4 European Series. Belgian Racing Car Championship. Masters of Formula 3. Porsche GT3 Cup Benelux. BOSS (Big Open Single Seaters) GP. Live coverage: Sunday @ noon ET and Sunay @ 11 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network (Delayed TV) International GT Open: Hungaroring GT Open offers some exciting GT racing and usually runs in conjunction with their formula-car cousins. Hungaroring is in Hungary. Website: GT Open site. Hungaroring site. Event page. Weekend schedule. Supporting series: EuroFormula Open. Radical European Masters. Live coverage: Live streaming on GT Open YouTube channel and on EuroFormula YT channel. Britcar: Oulton Park The Britcar weekend includes two 90-minute races for the endurance racers in the crowd, but if it were me, I’d go for the support races: Whole fields of classic Minis and then a spec series of Mk. 2 Volkswagen GTi. IMSA Endurance (2 x 90 min) and Touring Car Championship (1x 90 min.). Website: Britcar site. Oulton Park site. Weekend schedule. Entry list. Supporting series: BRSSC Mighty Minis. Teekay Couplings Production GTi Championship. Live coverage: None in the U.S. FIA World RallyCross: Sweden Four races, four different winners in World RallyCross. This falls well down the list because the American version (Global RallyCross) is maybe a bit better but is certainly better marketed and more fun. Website: World RX site. Sweden site. Event page. Live coverage: Livestream on FIA RX site. World Superbike: Portimao Two-wheel racing in Portugal. It’s a thing and it’s probably more entertaining than the World Cup for most. Website: WSBK site. Portimao site. Event page with weekend schedule. Supporting series: SuperSport Championship. SuperStock 1000. Superstock 600. European Junior Cup. Live coverage: Sunday @ TBA on beIN Sports (TV). VLN Endurance Championship: Nurburgring The ‘ring-only endurance championship, which included the 24-hour race, trudges along with a one-day event that features a four-hour race in the afternoon following morning qualifying. Ho hum. There’s usually live streaming of it, but I can’t find that information, for some reason. Website: VLN/Nurburgring site with weekend schedule. Live coverage: Somewhere. Formula One: British Grand Prix (Silverstone Circuit) Possibly the least-American thing you could watch. King George III himself would have watched this with glee, reason enough for red-blooded American to pay it no heed. Website: F1 site. Silverstone site. Event page. Weekend schedule. Supporting series: Porsche Supercup. GP3. GP2. Live coverage: Sunday @ 8 a.m. ET on NBC Sports Network (Live TV) and Sunday @ 5:00 p.m. ET on NBCSN (TV Replay) [Lead photo copyright 2014 Hooniverse/Eric Rood | Other photos: Newman Haas Racing, SCCA, Matthew Manor/NASCAR Hometracks, V8 Supercars]
