The American Power Boat Association’s Gold Cup is the oldest running trophy in motor sport. In 1918 the Cup was won by legendary racer, Garfield (Gar) Wood in the Curtiss V-12 powered “Miss Detroit III.” That was fitting as the race that year was held at Detroit. Wood had won the previous year in the single step hydroplane, Miss Detroit II, and would go on to win three more following his 1918 victory. All in boats made out of wood, and of spectacular beauty.
