Last Call- American Beauty Edition

America

What does America mean to you? For me, it means freedom, craftsmanship, and makin’ do with whatcha’ got. There is perhaps no better example of these attributes than this home brew and flag festooned trike. Why you’re not standing at attention and saluting this amazing amalgamation of square section tubing and Hooters guest booth seating is beyond me. Also, outside of my comprehension is the engine powering this amazing ride, hidden as it is behind a thin masking sheet of screen door material and children’s toys. What do you think it is? For closer inspection, you can find a large and in charge edition of the image here.

Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day. It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

Holley made a glass float bowl model 1904 single barrel carburetor. I'm guessing that's not much of a clue, though. It ain't a IH 152 motor.
Prestone brake fluid in a beer cozy. Me likey. especially since there's a dedicated beer holder elsewhere. I'm betting that cozy is nailed to the floorboard. Also I'm used to the springs staying inside the sliders but hey! let your freak flag fly, right?
Hey! In other news… I have a permanent job! My gig at the science museum was a 26 month contract, and after a grueling two weeks of unemployment, during which I was forced by economic pressure to drink PBR, said science museum has hired me on as a permanent employee! Yay!
To put this in perspective, I was born in the 1960s and this is the first time I've felt like I have an 'adult' job.
I went out immediately and bought better beer. (Speakeasy Tallulah.)

Fuck me. That appears to be an AMC 2.5 four-banger.

Correction: Pontiac 2.5, perhaps as used by AMC.

I don't know what the engine is, but if he replaces the accessory drive belt he could have power steering and AC.
Edit: Very sexist of me to assume that's a dude's ride.

That is a Ford 2.3/2.5 AKA Pinto engine by the distributor, oil filter location. It looks like it was an injected engine by what sort of looks like a 4bbl manifold.

How do people deal with selling cars? I put so much attention into my cars that seeing them ruined by someone else is something I'd hate to deal with (I've owned 13 cars and only sold 4!) Any tips on breaking connection with a vehicle?

Move two states away so you never see it again. (Ok, ok, not helpful, but that's what I did by accident the one time I've parted with a vehicle…)

Thats the only way i manage to sell the cars I did sell! I moved to the other side of the world so I'm sure I won't see them now

Trade it in, instead of selling it privately. I had my '95 F-150 for 17 years, and I didn't want to see who was buying it, so trading it in was the best solution. Recently I got a letter in the mail from the Carfax class-action settlement, with a code for two free searches, so I'm going to use one to search for my F-150, and one for our last Previa that we traded in two years ago.

I buy cars and drive them until they die. The few I've sold, I manage to break the emotional bond by letting them sit for a few months (usually because something expensive or difficult broke) while I drive something else. Then fix the first and sell, before I get attached again.

When discussing the import of cars from Europe there is always so much to say about the titles, how do you register this or that, a diesel might be impossible, even a Volvo might pose a bit of a challenge. So how on earth has this thing arrived in a public parking lot? I can't really say I understand the American registration system yet.

    1. Alff Avatar

      1) Motorcycles are lightly regulated
      2) Many states never inspect a vehicle after it's registered. We may be looking a 1977 CB 750, for all the law knows.

      1. Sjalabais Avatar

This is barely a motorcycle, but, yes, I get your point. Is there no biannual tech inspection like British MOT or German TÜV?

        1. Alff Avatar

In the eyes of the USDOT, less than 4 wheels = motorcycle.
Tech inspection rules vary widely by state. In Washington, where I grew up, there is only an emissions test. In Missouri, where I live now, there is a biannual tech inspection but it is nowhere as rigorous as typical in Europe. For example, rust through is not a problem unless it is structural. I know people who have removed the catalytic converters from their older vehicles and pass with no issues. In the neighboring state of Kansas, there are no inspections.

            Sjalabais

This is fascinating to me. I have always had cars that either passed inspection with a screeching noise or had no chance of passing at all. Naturally, that placed me at the sceptical end of the inspection acceptance scale. Still, I'd be scared to move out in traffic without it, because I know there are too many people that can't be bothered to keep their vehicles in shape.
I guess, if you're stopped by traffic control and you drive a rusted out POS with hardly any brake capacity left, you're responsible for your vehicle anyway? Police can fine vehicular neglect?

          2. jeepjeff Avatar
            jeepjeff

They'll normally only do that if they're mad at you and looking to write extra tickets. And for equipment violations, in California, it usually isn't vehicular neglect that gets cracked down on, but rather vehicular modification. I've yet to hear of someone getting ticketed for a badly rusted frame, but front license plates, fenders that don't cover the wheels enough, excessive engine noise, yep. Those will all get called out at a stop (if the officer is mad at you; I've been left alone for the front license plate before, and the Jeep has never been in compliance with that one). Otherwise, in California, they never do regular tech/safety inspections. Only smog every other year (but heaven help you if you fail that). And that's only for 1976 and up. You could have the most rusted out, beater of 1975 malaise beater, and there isn't much they will do out here. As long as it isn't sputtering a cloud of smoke out the tailpipe, you're good; they won't come after you.
Where you get in trouble is if your brakes fail and you hit someone, it's very much your fault.

This 'trike' has so many issues, I dont know where to start(or stop)
Let's just chalk it up to 'Murikun' ingenuity(especially the 'stage coach' rear seat suspension)
