With his signature cowboy hat, boots, and dirty overalls, Smokey Yunick was a fixture of ’60s racing. His Best Damn Garage in Town shop also gained the rep for being a Frankenstein’s laboratory of go-faster. Not all of the work that Yunick and his team did however, was completely above-board. Rule-bending in racing is as old as the sport itself, and there have been many more like Yunick who have tried to get an edge by interpreting rules their own way, or by trying to sneak their way past them without getting caught. It’s not just racing where sneaky pets compete, as the number of corked bats and vasaline’d caps over the years in baseball attest. Of course, if we were interested in baseball rules we’d call this place Hoonibase, and would be suggesting that maybe L.A.’s Dodgers might wan’t to give cheating a try because nothing else seems to be working. No, we’re still Hooniverse, and as such what we want to find is your opinion of what racers – drivers, mechanics and/or teams – that you think have been the greatest rule benders of all time.
