Hooniverse Asks- What's the Cleverest Convertible Top?

59 retractable Do you recall the Buick Reatta? That was GM’s attempt – along with the Cadillac Allante and Olds Trofeo – at creating a boutique car. That E-Body two seater never quite lived up to corporate expectations, but its convertible edition did pose the company’s engineers with a dunning task. The issue with the Reatta soft top was the mandate that the top extend to the bodywork’s sides. This presented a problem as if it is flush with the fenders, there’s typically no place for the top to go when it’s retracted. Buick’s slide rule crew managed to pull this edict off, and the Reatta soft top is unique in that it both folds and contracts so as to maintain a smooth outline when raised, but still let the sun shine in when demanded. That’s a pretty cool convertible top, but is its unique engineering the most cool? In a world of soft and hard-top options, which do you think is the most clever convertible top? Image: Jims59
